urlscan Brand AI for Visual Brand Detection
Today we’re launching our urlscan Brand AI feature as part of our mission to detect and combat phishing and brand impersonation. This new capability visually examines screenshots of scans to determine which brand or company a website is claiming to represent, providing a more robust approach to brand detection than text-based methods alone.

Why Visual Brand Detection?
Using a visual approach to determining brand representation is often more
robust than text-based approaches. Traditional brand hunting relies on
searching fields like text.content, page.title, and page.domain, which
are solid filtering options but have significant blind spots:
- Common brand names: If the brand name is a common English word, text-based results often include unrelated content.
- Domain independence: Brand names may not appear in domain names at all.
- Legitimate references: Pages may reference brands for legitimate reasons, such as news articles.
- Visual-only branding: Brand names may only appear as images or SVG elements.
urlscan Brand AI covers these blind spots by asking a simple visual question: Which brand does this website claim to represent?
Technical Implementation
Any scan processed by urlscan Brand AI receives the system label
labels:visual.brandai. When a brand is identified, the brand name is stored
in the new visible.brandname Search API field, enabling targeted searches
like visible.brandname:acme.
Current Coverage: urlscan Brand AI is currently applied to any scan with a score > 0 from our ML engine. Over time, we hope to expand Brand AI coverage to the majority of scans coming into urlscan.
Availability
urlscan Brand AI is available starting today for urlscan Pro users and can be
accessed through scan result pages. Searching and filtering by brand names is
available via the Search API using the visible.brandname field.
