There are 3 approaches to assessment that contribute as a whole to student
learning:

assessment for learning

assessment as learning

assessment of learning.

These phrases are used instead of the older terms: diagnostic, formative and
summative.


ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students'
knowledge, understanding and skills to inform their teaching. Sometimes referred
to as ‘formative assessment', it usually occurs throughout the teaching and
learning process to clarify student learning and understanding.


ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING

Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students
monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to
decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment for new learning.


ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING

Assessment of learning assists teachers in using evidence of student learning to
assess achievement against outcomes and standards. Sometimes referred to as
‘summative assessment', it usually occurs at defined key points during a unit of
work or at the end of a unit, term or semester, and may be used to rank or grade
students. The effectiveness of this for grading or ranking depends on the
validity and reliability of activities - and its effectiveness as an opportunity
for learning depends on the nature and quality of the feedback.


BACKGROUND TO THESE 3 APPROACHES

Traditionally, the focus of classroom assessment has been on assessment of
learning - measuring learning after the fact, using the information to make
judgements about students’ performances, and reporting these judgements to
others.

During the 1990’s a groundswell of research emphasised the importance of
assessment for learning (formative assessment). Teachers were using assessment
for learning when they built in diagnostic processes, formative assessment, and
feedback at various stages in the teaching and learning process. It was,
however, often informal and implicit.

From the noughties onwards, assessment for learning was separated into
assessment for learning, and assessment as learning, to emphasise the role of
the student in the assessment process.

Systematic assessment as learning - where students become critical analysts of
their own learning - is an important form of assessment that needs to go beyond
incorporating self-assessment into teaching programs. It has become an
assessment practice that is systematically used to develop students’ capacity to
evaluate and adapt their own learning.

A teacher and his/her students need to know who reaches (and exceeds) important
learning targets - thus … assessment of learning, has a place in teaching.
Robust learning generally requires robust teaching … and assessments for
learning are catalysts for better teaching. In the end, however, when assessment
is seen as learning - for students as well as for teachers - it becomes most
informative and generative for students and teachers alike. Tomlinson (2008)

Tomlinson (2008) summarises these approaches as:

informing teaching informing learning

judging performance.

Regardless of the assessment approach, what matters most is how the information
is used to improve student learning.


MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT

When making decisions about classroom assessment, it's necessary to understand
the key similarities and differences between the 3 approaches so they can
be incorporated into the planning assessment strategies process. Considerations
when planning assessment include:

what is the purpose?

what will be the timing and location?

what is being assessed?

how will the assessment information be gathered?

how will the assessment information be used?


ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING - BY TEACHERS

1. Purpose - for teachers to:

gather evidence to determine what students know and can do

decide where students need to go next

determine how best to get them there.

2. Timing: prior to, and frequently in an ongoing manner during instruction
while students are still gaining knowledge and practising skills.

3. Strategies: a range of strategies in different modes that make students’
skills and understandings visible.

4. Use of information:

plan instruction and assessment that are differentiated and personalised

work with students to set appropriate learning goals

monitor students’ progress towards achieving overall and specific expectations

provide timely and specific descriptive feedback to students (what they are
doing well, what needs improvement and how to improve)

scaffold next steps

differentiate instruction and assessment in response to student needs

provide parents/carers with descriptive feedback about student learning and
ideas for support.


ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING - BY STUDENTS

1. Purpose - for students to:

gather evidence to monitor their learning

use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do

identify next steps in their learning.

ASSESSMENT AND MEASURES OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Assessment and Measures of Academic Excellence Student Learning Objectives

Each program in the College of Education and Human Development establishes
specific and measurable learning objectives for our students. Throughout the
college, our learning objectives address five key areas of student development
and engagement:

Building core knowledge and skills to provide a grounding in the specialty
field.

Developing mastery and experience in research theories, methodologies, and
practices.

Exploring issues in and approaches to assessment and measurement.

Understanding diversity and how to modify procedures and approaches to affect
positive change in learners of all cultural backgrounds.

Cultivating professionalism through professional activities and demonstrated
awareness of the standards and ethical guidelines of the field.

Each year, programs collect and evaluate student work, under the guidelines
described above, to assess the success of programs in meeting these learning
objectives. Based on these evaluations, programs consider development in our
curriculum and pedagogy, make changes and improvements, and then assess again to
measure impacts on student performance and success. The assessment process and
evaluations are overseen by the Continuous Program Improvement Committee, which
guide programs to ensure the development of measurable goals and the validity
and quality of the assessments by which those goals are measured.


ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING

Temple University is committed to providing superior educational opportunities
to its students. To help us maintain quality academic offerings, the University
and its programs regularly examine the effectiveness of the curricula, teaching,
services, and programs the University provides. As Temple University sees
appropriate, it may retain representative examples or copies of student work.
This might include papers, exams, creative works, or portfolios developed and
submitted in courses or to satisfy the requirements for degree program(s).

In addition to regularly collecting and reviewing student work, Temple
University may summarize the results of this review, and use the information to
improve programs and enhance student learning. Some of this assessment may also
be necessary for Temple University or its programs to demonstrate it meets the
standards of external review or accrediting bodies.

Typically, results will be reported in a general, summary format and students'

Assessment in Practice

Although assessments are currently used for many purposes in the educational
system, a premise of this report is that their effectiveness and utility must
ultimately be judged by the extent to which they promote student learning. The
aim of assessment should be “to educate and improve student performance, not
merely to audit it” (Wiggins, 1998, p.7). To this end, people should gain
important and useful information from every assessment situation. In education,
as in other professions, good decision making depends on access to relevant,
accurate, and timely information. Furthermore, the information gained should be
put to good use by informing decisions about curriculum and instruction and
ultimately improving student learning (Falk, 2000; National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics, 1995).

Assessments do not function in isolation; an assessment’s effectiveness in
improving learning depends on its relationships to curriculum and instruction.
Ideally, instruction is faithful and effective in relation to curriculum, and
assessment reflects curriculum in such a way that it reinforces the best
practices in instruction. In actuality, however, the relationships among
assessment, curriculum, and instruction are not always ideal. Often assessment
taps only a subset of curriculum and without regard to instruction, and can
narrow and distort instruction in unintended ways (Klein, Hamilton, McCaffrey,
and Stecher, 2000; Koretz and Barron, 1998; Linn, 2000; National Research
Council [NRC], 1999b). In this chapter we expand on the idea, introduced in
Chapter 2, that synergy can best be achieved if the three parts of the system
are bound by or grow out of a shared knowledge base about cognition and learning
in the domain.

PURPOSES AND CONTEXTS OF USE

Educational assessment occurs in two major contexts. The first is the classroom.
Here assessment is used by teachers and students mainly to assist learning, but
also to gauge students’ summative achievement over the longer term. Second is
large-scale assessment, used by policy makers and educational leaders to
evaluate programs and/or obtain information about whether individual students
have met learning goals.

The sharp contrast that typically exists between classroom and largescale
assessment practices arises because assessment designers have not been able to
fulfill the purposes of different assessment users with the same data and
analyses. To guide instruction and monitor its effects, teachers need
information that is intimately connected with the work their students are doing,
and they interpret this evidence in light of everything else they know about
their students and the conditions of instruction. Part of the power of classroom
assessment resides in these connections. Yet precisely because they are
individualized and highly contextualized, neither the rationale nor the results
of typical classroom assessments are easily communicated beyond the classroom.
Large-scale, standardized tests do communicate efficiently across time and
place, but by so constraining the content and timeliness of the message that
they often have little utility in the classroom. This contrast illustrates the
more general point that one size of assessment does not fit all. The purpose of
an assessment determines priorities, and the context of use imposes constraints
on the design, thereby affecting the kinds of information a particular
assessment can provide about student achievement.


INEVITABILITY OF TRADE-OFFS IN DESIGN

To say that an assessment is a good assessment or that a task is a good task is
like saying that a medical test is a good test; each can provide useful
information only under certain circumstances. An MRI of a knee, for example, has
unquestioned value for diagnosing cartilage damage, but is not helpful for
diagnosing the overall quality of a person’s health. It is natural for people to
understand medical tests in this way, but not educational tests. The same
argument applies nonetheless, but in ways that are less familiar and perhaps
more subtle.

In their classic text Psychological Tests and Personnel Decisions, Cronbach and
Gleser (1965) devote an entire chapter to the trade-off between fidelity and
bandwidth when testing for employment selection. A high-fidelity,
narrow-bandwidth test provides accurate information about a small number of
focused questions, whereas a low-fidelity, broad-bandwidth test provides noisier
information for a larger number of less-focused questions. For a

I am trying to connect to DB in a servlet using Hibernate.I have read that we
can use either hibernate.cfg.xml or hibernate.properties file for configuration
of session.For me it worked with xml. Now when I am trying to use properties
instead of xml its not working. It is saying that hibernate.cfg.xml not
found.But nowhere I mentioned to use xml file and infact I have deleted that xml
file.

Please Help me. And Please correct me if I am doing anything wrong.

From what i understood from hibernate the best thing to do is to define the
mapping in the hibernate.cfg.xml file and other configurations in the
hibernate.properties.

An alternative approach to configuration is to specify a full configuration in a
file named hibernate.cfg.xml. This file can be used as a replacement for the
hibernate.properties file or, if both are present, to override properties.

The hibernate.cfg.xml is also more convenient once you have to tune the
Hibernate cache. It is your choice to use either hibernate.properties or
hibernate.cfg.xml. Both are equivalent.

If you are using a database from a servlet then you should define a DataSource
in your server and point one hibernate property at that instead of defining
everything via all the other hibernate properties you're probably using now.

This has the benefit of permitting you to define connection pooling and other
connection related parameters independently of your application.

For example, your production environment is likely to have a different database
password than your test and development environments.

Hibernate requires to know in advance — where to find the mapping information
that defines how your Java classes relate to the database tables. Hibernate also
requires a set of configuration settings related to database and other related
parameters. All such information is usually supplied as a standard Java
properties file called hibernate.properties, or as an XML file named
hibernate.cfg.xml.

I will consider XML formatted file hibernate.cfg.xml to specify required
Hibernate properties in my examples. Most of the properties take their default
values and it is not required to specify them in the property file unless it is
really required. This file is kept in the root directory of your application's
classpath.


HIBERNATE PROPERTIES

Following is the list of important properties, you will be required to configure
for a databases in a standalone situation −

HIBERNATE WITH MYSQL DATABASE

access the database.

Hibernate Configuration File for beginners and professionals with inheritance
mapping, collection mapping, component mapping, HQL, HCQL, Named Query, Caching
and Integration of Hibernate with other frameworks.


HIBERNATE CONFIGURATION

As Hibernate can operate in different environments, it requires a wide range of
configuration parameters. These configurations contain the mapping information
that provides different functionalities to Java classes. Generally, we provide
database related mappings in the configuration file. Hibernate facilitates to
provide the configurations either in an XML file (like hibernate.cfg.xml) or
properties file (like hibernate.properties).

An instance of Configuration class allows specifying properties and mappings to
applications. This class also builds an immutable SessionFactory.

We can acquire the Configuration class instance by instantiating it directly and
specifying mappings in the configuration file. Use the addResource() method, if
the mapping files are present in the classpath.

HIBERNATE CONFIGURATION PROPERTIES

Property Description

hibernate.dialect It represents the type of database used in hibernate to
generate SQL statements for a particular relational database.

hibernate.show_sql It is used to display the executed SQL statements to console.

hibernate.format_sql It is used to print the SQL in the log and console.

hibernate.default_catalog It qualifies unqualified table names with the given
catalog in generated SQL.

hibernate.default_schema It qualifies unqualified table names with the given
schema in generated SQL.

hibernate.session_factory_name The SessionFactory interface automatically bound
to this name in JNDI after it has been created.

hibernate.default_entity_mode It sets a default mode for entity representation
for all sessions opened from this SessionFactory

hibernate.order_updates It orders SQL updates on the basis of the updated
primary key.

hibernate.use_identifier_rollback If enabled, the generated identifier
properties will be reset to default values when objects are deleted.

hibernate.generate_statistics If enabled, the Hibernate will collect statistics
useful for performance tuning.

hibernate.use_sql_comments If enabled, the Hibernate generate comments inside
the SQL. It is used to make debugging easier.


HIBERNATE CACHE PROPERTIES

Property Description

hibernate.cache.provider_class It represents the classname of a custom
CacheProvider.

hibernate.cache.use_minimal_puts It is used to optimize the second-level cache.
It minimizes writes, at the cost of more frequent reads.

hibernate.cache.use_query_cache It is used to enable the query cache.

hibernate.cache.use_second_level_cache It is used to disable the second-level
cache, which is enabled by default for classes which specify a mapping.

hibernate.cache.query_cache_factory It represents the classname of a custom
QueryCache interface.

hibernate.cache.region_prefix It specifies the prefix which is used for
second-level cache region names.

hibernate.cache.use_structured_entries It facilitates Hibernate to store data in
the second-level cache in a more human-friendly format.


HIBERNATE TRANSACTION PROPERTIES

Property Description

hibernate.transaction.factory_class It represents the classname of a
TransactionFactory which is used with Hibernate Transaction API.

hibernate.transaction.manager_lookup_class It represents the classname of a
TransactionManagerLookup. It is required when JVM-level caching is enabled.

[1] भीमराव रामजी आम्बेडकर[a] (14 अप्रैल, 1891 – 6 दिसंबर, 1956), डॉ॰ बाबासाहब
आम्बेडकर नाम से लोकप्रिय, भारतीय बहुज्ञ, विधिवेत्ता, अर्थशास्त्री, राजनीतिज्ञ,
और समाजसुधारक थे।[2] उन्होंने दलित बौद्ध आंदोलन को प्रेरित किया और अछूतों
(दलितों) से सामाजिक भेदभाव के विरुद्ध अभियान चलाया था। श्रमिकों, किसानों और
महिलाओं के अधिकारों का समर्थन भी किया था।[3] वे स्वतंत्र भारत के प्रथम विधि एवं
न्याय मन्त्री, भारतीय संविधान के जनक एवं भारत गणराज्य के निर्माताओं में से एक
थे।[4][5][6][7]

आम्बेडकर विपुल प्रतिभा के छात्र थे। उन्होंने कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय और लंदन
स्कूल ऑफ़ इकोनॉमिक्स दोनों ही विश्वविद्यालयों से अर्थशास्त्र में डॉक्टरेट की
उपाधियाँ प्राप्त कीं तथा विधि, अर्थशास्त्र और राजनीति विज्ञान में शोध कार्य भी
किये थे।[8] व्यावसायिक जीवन के आरम्भिक भाग में ये अर्थशास्त्र के प्रोफेसर रहे
एवं वकालत भी की तथा बाद का जीवन राजनीतिक गतिविधियों में अधिक बीता। इसके बाद
आम्बेडकर भारत की स्वतंत्रता के लिए प्रचार और चर्चाओं में शामिल हो गए और
पत्रिकाओं को प्रकाशित करने, राजनीतिक अधिकारों की वकालत करने और दलितों के लिए
सामाजिक स्वतंत्रता की वकालत की और भारत के निर्माण में उनका महत्वपूर्ण योगदान
रहा।[9]

हिंदू पंथ में व्याप्त कुरूतियों और छुआछूत की प्रथा से तंग आकार सन 1956 में
उन्होंने बौद्ध धर्म अपना लिया था। सन 1990 में, उन्हें भारत रत्न, भारत के
सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान से मरणोपरांत सम्मानित किया गया था। 14 अप्रैल को उनका जन्म
दिवस आम्बेडकर जयंती के तौर पर भारत समेत दुनिया भर में मनाया जाता है।[10] डॉक्टर
आम्बेडकर की विरासत में लोकप्रिय संस्कृति में कई स्मारक और चित्रण शामिल
हैं।[11][12]

Ambedkar Jayanti 2022:  भारत का संविधान इसे अन्य देशों से अलग बनाता है। यह
संविधान ही है जो हर नागरिक के अधिकारों की रक्षा करता है तो वहीं एक नागरिक के तौर
पर उनके कर्तव्यों को सुनिश्चित करता है। इसी भारतीय संविधान के निर्माता के तौर पर
डॉक्टर भीमराव अंबेडकर मशहूर हैं। बाबा साहेब अंबेडकर की संविधान के निर्माण में
भूमिका अतुल्य है। कई लोगों ने इस बाबत तमाम दलीलें दीं लेकिन डाॅ. अंबेडकर के
योगदान और भूमिका को भारतीय संविधान में नकारा नहीं जा सकता है। 14 अप्रैल 1891 को
बाबा साहेब भीमराव अंबेडकर का जन्म हुआ था। भीमराव अंबेडकर को बचपन से भेदभाव का
सामना करना पड़ा। हालांकि उन्होंने कठिनाइयों से हार नहीं मानी और 32 डिग्री हासिल
की। एक कुशल अर्थशास्त्री रहे डॉ. बी आर अंबेडकर की जयंती के मौके पर जानें कि
संविधान निर्माण में बाबा साहेब की क्या भूमिका है।

भारत का संविधान

देश की आजादी के बाद भारतीय संविधान सभा का गठन हुआ। संविधान सभा में कुल 379 सदस्य
थे, जिसमें 15 महिलाएं थीं। संविधान की ड्राफ्टिंग समिति के अध्यक्ष डॉ. भीमराव
अंबेडकर थे। यह उस दौर में बहुत बड़ी बात थी कि जब छुआछूत और जाति-पाति मानी जाती
थी, तब एक अस्पृश्य व्यक्ति को प्रभावशाली पद मिला हो। कई विशेषज्ञों के मुताबिक,
संविधान सभा में बाबा साहेब का चयन उनकी प्रशासनिक दक्षता और राजनीतिक प्रभाव के
कारण हुआ था।

संविधान निर्माण के लिए जिस ड्राफ्टिंग कमेटी का गठन हुआ उसके मुखिया के तौर पर
अंबेडकर का निर्वाचन हुआ। दरअसल उस समय नेहरू ने संविधान सभा के उद्देश्यों की एक
रूपरेखा प्रस्तुत की थी, तब एक अन्य सदस्य रहे जयकर ने राय दी कि किसी भी प्रस्ताव
पर मुस्लिम लीग के प्रतिनिधि के बिना मतदान नहीं किया जा सकता। इस पर अंबेडकर ने भी
पहली बार हस्तक्षेप करते हुए कहा अपनी राय दी। उनकी सलाह से बहुत सारे कांग्रेसी
नेता प्रभावित हुए।

अंबेडकर का संविधान निर्माण में योगदान 

यहां से उनकी भूमिका संविधान सभा की ड्राफ्टिंग को लेकर मजबूत होती गई। उन्होंने
संविधान सभा के चर्चा का संचालन और नेतृत्व किया। अंबेडकर ने अल्पसंख्यकों के
अधिकारों के विषय में संबंधित अनुच्छेदों पर बहस के दौरान अपना नजरिया सबके सामने
रखा। बतौर ड्राफ्टिंग कमेटी अध्यक्ष बाबा साहेब ने कई समितियों की ओर से आए सभी
प्रस्तावों को अनुच्छेदों में सूत्रबद्ध किया। संविधान की सम्पादकीय जिम्मेदारी भी
मुख्य तौर पर अंबेडकर ने ही उठाई। जिसे बाद में ड्राफ्टिंग कमेटी के सदस्य रहे
टी.टी. कृष्णमाचारी ने संविधान सभा के सामने रखा।
