Chapter 1 The Saddleback Story One generation will commend your works to
another; they will tell of your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4 Praise the greatness of
the LORD, who loves to see his servants do well. Psalm 35:27 (NCV) In November
1973, a buddy and I skipped out on our college classes and drove 350 miles to
hear Dr. W. A. Criswell speak at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco. Criswell
was the renowned pastor of the largest Baptist church in the world, the First
Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. For me, as a young Southern Baptist, the
opportunity to hear Criswell in person was the equivalent of a Catholic getting
to hear the pope. I was determined to hear this living legend. I had felt God's
call to ministry three years earlier and had begun speaking as a youth
evangelist while still in high school. Although I was just nineteen years old,
I'd already preached revival meetings in about fifty churches. I had no doubt
that God had called me to ministry, but I was unsure if God wanted me to become
a pastor. I believe W. A. Criswell is the greatest American pastor of the
twentieth century. He pastored at First Baptist for fifty years, wrote
fifty-three books, and developed the most widely copied church model of this
century. Not only was he a powerful preacher and leader, he was an
organizational genius. Most people think of tradition when they think of
Criswell, but actually his ministry was incredibly innovative. It only became
known as traditional after everyone copied him! We often hear today about
celebrity pastors whose stars flame bright for a few years and then fizzle out.
It's easy to make an impressive start. But Criswell's ministry lasted half a
century in one church! It was no flash in the pan. It withstood the test of
time. To me that is genuine success: loving and leading consistently and ending
well. Ministry is a marathon. It's not how you start out that matters but how
you end. So, how do you make it to the end? The Bible says, 'Love never fails'
(1 Cor. 13:8). If you minister out of love you can never be considered a
failure. As I listened to this great man of God preach, God spoke personally to
me and made it very clear that he was calling me to be a pastor. Then and there,
I promised God I'd give my entire life to pastoring a single church if that was
his will for me. After the service, my buddy and I stood in line to shake hands
with Dr. Criswell. When my turn finally arrived, something unexpected happened.
Criswell looked at me with kind, loving eyes and said, quite emphatically,
'Young man, I feel led to lay hands on you and pray for you!' Without delay, he
placed his hands on my head and prayed these words that I will never forget:
'Father, I ask that you give this young preacher a double portion of your
Spirit. May the church he pastors grow to twice the size of the Dallas church.
Bless him greatly, O Lord.' As I walked away with tears in my eyes, I said to my
friend Danny, 'Did he pray what I think he prayed?' 'He sure did,' said Danny,
also with wet eyes. I could not possibly imagine that God could ever use me like
Dr. Criswell had prayed, but that holy experience confirmed in my heart that God
had called me to pastor a local church. The Story Behind the Methods Every
theology has a context. You won't understand Luther's theology without
understanding Luther's life and how God was sovereignly working in the world at
that time. Likewise, you can't fully appreciate Calvin's theology without
understanding the circumstances in which he forged his beliefs. In the same way,
every methodology has a story behind it. Many people look at the so-called
'megachurches' and assume those churches have always been big. They forget that
every large church started off as a small church. And no church becomes large
without struggling through years of problems, setbacks, and failures. For
instance, Saddleback met for fifteen years before being able to build our first
building. This one factor alone helped shape our strategy of reaching,
retaining, and growing believers in Christ. It kept our focus on people and
created a church culture very open to change. To understand many of the methods
in this book, you need to understand the context in which they were developed.
Otherwise you might be tempted to copy things we did without considering the
context. Please do not do this! Instead, look beneath the methods to see the
transferable principles on which they are based. I'll identify the principles,
but first you need to know a little of Saddleback's history. Very little of
Saddleback's ministry was preplanned. I didn't have any long-range strategy
before I started the church. I simply knew God had called me to plant a new
church built on the five New Testament purposes, and I had a bag of ideas I
wanted to try out. Each innovation we've developed was just a response to the
circumstances in which we found ourselves. I didn't plan them in advance. Most
people think of 'vision' as the ability to see the future. But in today's
rapidly changing world, vision is also the ability to accurately assess current
changes and take advantage of them. Vision is being alert to opportunities.
Because Saddleback is a young church and I am the founding pastor, we've been
able to experiment with far more ideas than the average church---mostly due to
the fact that we didn't have decades of tradition to deal with. (However we had
many other problems that older churches don't have!) In the early years we had
nothing to lose, so we tried out all kinds of ideas. Some of our ideas were
spectacular failures. And I wish I could claim that all our successes happened
just the way we planned them---but it would be untrue. I'm not that smart. Most
of our successes have been the result of trial and error and some of our
discoveries were purely accidental.

I have been a church attender for over 30 years and I have been in the fog up
until this time.
I am not a deacon, elder, or a pastor. I read this book out of desperation over
the lackluster way my church has been going on in the last 5 years (it's totally
disorganized: I never could understand how the sermon topics were preached and
how the Sunday school or the fellowship group picks its materials).
Coming across this book is like hitting a gold mine. Even hitting a gold mine
requires lots of digging. And I did. I devoted all my free time to read this
book in the last few weeks. It is a gold mine not just for the pastors but also
for people seeking a church to belong. After you have internalized this book,
you will not be able to step into another church without knowing what to look
for. And that is the true value of the book.
This book can be applied to even people who work with youths, with the
children's ministry, with running a "church" within your own family.
I am fine with using various translations in the Bible passages that he quoted.
Read this book. You will not have wasted your energy. My next project is to come
up with a powerpoint presentation on what I have gleaned from this book.

This book should be read by anyone who is in ministry, who is serving at church,
who is involved with the church, etc. This book is written by a pastor, a
pastor's pastor. Warren is one of the most known church planters of our time. He
provides great insight, and he writes from a biblical viewpoint. He does not
simply go by what he thinks-- he goes by God's Word and shares his experience.
This book isn't a how to book either. He specifically says that each church is
different. As he writes, he discusses the founding of Saddleback Church;
however, he presents the honest truth of planting churches and ministering. I
would recommend this to anyone in ministry. I think every church or anyone
thinking of planting a church should read this book. When I say every church, I
mean every single person who is ministering in the church, from the pastor to
the layperson. This book would also be helpful for church members to understand
the purpose of the church. Warren discusses the five purposes of the Church, and
these are five purposes that are found in the Bible. These five purposes
everyone should know. We all need this.

I just finished this for the 2nd time and plan on starting it all over again. I
have been putting into practice these principles into the life of the church for
over 20 years and seen much MUCH fruit. This time reading it I have committed to
brush off the cob webs of the PDC model. I thought that the principles would be
outdated since the first time I read this. NO WAY! Still applicable today as
when this was first written and when I first read it. I am more committed to
building a PDC church now more than ever. If you are a seasoned pastor, someone
who is discerning Gods call into ministry, or someone who is just starting out
in ministry - this book is a must read and re-read.

Purpose Driven Church is an excellent matrix for thinking about and organizing a
church. It is perfect for a new church development. It is filled with potential
leg-and-arm losing mines for the historic church that has a lot of tradition
holding it down. With wisdom and intentionality, this model, which is not new to
the Presbyterian Church (USA), the denomination I am a part of. Presbyterians
have historically been driven by "The Great Ends of the Church," a different
name for "Purpose Driven" but whose content matches the 5 Purposes as set forth
in the book. Rick Warren's 5 Purposes are not original, which Rick says in the
book. They are the same purposes pastors have preached since Christ. Rick just
puts them all together and communicates them through a felt need of modern
people, the need for purpose. So it connects the historic purpose of the church
with the felt needs of modern people and that's what makes it effective. The
book is realistic and honest. It doesn't tout this model as the end all. It
acknowledges the need for pastors to tailor the principles to thier context,
which if you do not do you may be looking for a new job after experiencing
tremendous conflict. For the Presbyterian churches that have restructured
themselves utilizing the book as food for thought and have done so patiently and
wisely, it has breathed new life into what many see as a "frozen" church. The
book's value is in how effectively it communicates God's Word concerning the
ministry of the church in the world. It highlights the need for balance and for
not being a one demensional church (i.e. soul winning church, a mission church,
a discipling church etc.) It offers a good model or matrix for thinking about
and structuring the church that makes sense and connects to the average person.
It is not a how to manual. You have to figure out how to apply what principles
when.
If it has a weakness it is in the area of failing to foster a diverse church.
Some churches may use it as a justification for remaining just as they are and
not reflecting thier community (a point raised in the book, the importance of
reflecting your community) but that may be lost when "targeting" people who
would feel comfortable in the church. Many urban white churches will not be
challenged by the book to change and reflect the community in which they live.
Other books will need to be used to develop an intentional process for many of
oour wealthy, inner city churches who are mainly white to become more diverse
and senstive to the needs of their community.

Good book. All about how to build a successful church with music, services, etc
from Rick Warrens experiences. You feel like you are with him on his journey.
Athough I am not a Pastor, I enjoyed reading this from a different perspective
on the many ways that churches will work with different people. Very good advice
and something to offer to your congregation when they are contemplating what to
do in different areas of the church. What works for one church, may not work for
others.

I've found this book to be full of wisdom and clear about what a church needs to
do. Some are worried that it's all about building a big church but Rick makes it
clear it is the purpose of the church that he is discussing. Many of the ideas
apply just as much to a small community church as a metropolitan mega church.
But Rick does make it clear that there's no point in a community church aspiring
to mega church status. That is why the leadership needs to be clear what the
purpose of their church is.
