Ralph Hannah reports from Asunción: Paraguay will kick off their 2011 Copa America campaign in Argentina on Sunday afternoon against Ecuador in Santa Fe. The squad, currently in Cordoba their base for the tournament, are bullish, and every journalist who asks gets the same answer: “We’re here to win it”. The confidence comes from their historic performance at last year’s World Cup (Paraguay’s first ever quarter final appearance) but morale has been boosted by the continued recovery of one Salvador Cabañas. The barrel-chested striker was scoring bags of goals for his club, América in Mexico until he was tragically shot in the head in a Mexico City bar on the 25th of January 2010. A nation held its breath as he underwent an operation and although he survived, the bullet was not removed and he was not out of danger. After more than a month he spoke to the press for the first time about his desire to play again. “Football gives you a lot things and I still want to play” he stated in Spanish. Previously he had spoken to his wife but only in Guaraní, the language he spoke at home in Itauguá, one of a cluster of poor industrial towns to the east of Asunción. He even went back to his home to stay with his parents during last year’s World Cup, sharing a bed with his father as he had done as a child. With that in mind the events earlier this month are even more astounding. On 8th June his physio Alder Rolón declared him 100% physically fit. Then, as if to prove it, a smiling Cabañas was photographed training not with local side Libertad (as he had been since February) but with the Paraguay national team. There is no doubt that Cabañas’ presence was a welcome lift for all the players and coaching staff. Nelson Haedo Valdez smiled when asked about his friend. “It brought back the good old times…I grew up with him in the national team,” before adding “every day with him is a gift from God.” Paraguay’s coach Gerardo Martino said seeing him again “makes us all feel better” and Cabañas was invited back. He ended up attending all the training sessions at the high performance centre in Ypané before the squad departed for Cordoba, Argentina on the 26th June. Salvador Cabañas had expressed his hopes to be part of the squad in Argentina as an honorary member a la David Beckham in the 2010 World Cup. In the end he hasn’t travelled and will cheer on his former teammates in Paraguay but he won’t be forgotten by anybody in the albirroja set up, while in South Africa they phoned him before every game as a ‘Cábala’ (superstition). Guarani ambition There is, of course, more than just superstitions and the inspiration that Cabañas represents to Paraguay’s game. They are a very well organised team coached by an experienced and tactically adept manager. Early signs from the Cordoba training camp suggest Paraguay will employ the high pressing, high paced, 4-3-3 style that was so successful against their South America rivals in the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. The talented but ultimately underperforming (at international level) Oscar Cardozo has been dropped from the squad altogether in favour of a more mobile attacking unit. Readers will be aware of Bundesliga champion Lucas Barrios and the Premier League’s Roque Santa Cruz, but there is also the top scorer from the Paraguayan Apertura, Pablo Zeballos and the very gifted (CONCACAF) Champions League winner Osvaldito Martinez. Le Mans winger Marcelo Estigarribia was very impressive in two friendlies against Bolivia and the forwards department is completed by the experienced and gutsy Valdez. Add that to a midfield that combines technical excellence with plenty of ‘garra’ (literal translation ‘claw’ but a better translation is balls) – epitomised by Nestor Ortigoza the San Lorenzo defensive midfielder who can put a ball on a sixpence and flatten an opponent into the size of one too. He is likely to be used off the bench to close out matches because Martino usually starts with the more mobile Victor ‘Topo’ Caceres complemented by Sunderland’s Cristian Riveros and the excellent Jonathan Santana who can harry and press their opposite numbers all game. A key part of Paraguay’s most recent friendly against Chile and their early training sessions has been winning the ball back quickly by reorganizing rapidly when possession is lost – the quality of their midfielders allow Martino to employ that tactic effectively. There is no doubt that Argentina and Brazil are the favourites to battle it in a third straight final, but Paraguay will be doing their utmost to change that. They have the defensive qualities, they have the attacking potential and in Salvador Cabañas they have a special motivation to take the Copa America trophy for the third time.
