We have asked some of the best experts in the makeup and beauty industry to give us their number one tip. From makeup artists, models to full-time beauty bloggers, we are sure you will find some great advice in here that you can to add to your beauty regime. Get looking your very best in front of your dressing room mirror with lights we hope you're inspired by this post, BEST BEAUTY & MAKEUP TOP TIPS VICTORIA STYLES, BEAUTY WRITER AT LIVINGDISROBED.COM We all know that Oil and Water do not mix and this same concept goes for your makeup! If you use an oil-based moisturiser and a foundation that is water-based or vice-versa, you are merely asking for trouble. Your foundation will break up, leaving you a hot lookin’ mess. Take a quick peep at the ingredients in your products, and if any oil is near the top of the list, then it is safe to say that it is an ‘oil product’. If the oil ingredient is listed near the end or not listed at all, it is likely a water-based product. So check your ingredients and assure you are using like-for-like products for all your cream-based products for a smooth, flawless canvas all day long. Follow Victoria on Instagram KARLA POWELL, AWARD WINNING MAKEUP ARTIST AT KARLAPOWELL.CO.UK My favourite beauty and makeup tips: Mixing foundation with moisturiser is an easy way to lighten your coverage options if you already have a fuller coverage foundation. Or maybe you want to add a natural luminous skin effect? Mix your foundation with a golden or a pearly loose natural skin tone eyeshadow. It gives your complexion a gorgeous healthy glow. Follow Karla on Instagram REBECCA GOODYEAR, WRITER AT BITEABLEBEAUTY.COM I am a firm believer that less is more when it comes to makeup but if you don’t like going au natural, rather than a heavy foundation, look for a tinted moisturiser, BB or CC Cream and use with concealer. There are heaps of natural and organic ones around now which offer excellent coverage but are still quite light. We all know pressed powder can look heavy and caked on if applied with a makeup sponge. To help prevent this, try utilising a makeup brush to use. Better still, switch to a loose powder for lighter coverage. Apply with a blusher or kabuki brush. Best idea? Try bronzer to give you a golden glow no matter how long it is since your skin saw the sun! Follow Rebecca on Instagram MADELEINE SPENCER, LIFESTYLE BLOGGER AT MADELEINELOVES.COM My best makeup tip is I always spend at least 50% of the time I’m doing my make-up on perfecting skin - I like it to look fresh and glowing without being able to see the product at all. Once I’ve done that, putting on the rest of my make-up is a breeze. Follow Madeleine on Instagram CARL RAY, MAKE UP ARTIST Be light-handed - less is more - you can always add it's harder to remove. Have the correct pallet and colours. *Make sure you blend. Follow Carl on Instagram BECCA HERMITT, BEAUTY WRITER AT FASHION TRAIN Mix a cream highlighter in with your foundation to achieve a more natural and dewy glow, an absolute lifesaver on gloomy winter days! Follow Becca on Instagram DAVE LACKIE, BEAUTY EDITOR AT DAVELACKIE.COM The best makeup tip I've learned from my pro makeup artist Nina Westbury is to test lipstick shades on the pads of your fingers. Try three or four different colours then hold your hand up to your face and look in a mirror with lights. You'll instantly know what shade is right for you. It's amazing at how well it works. That is because the skin colouring on your fingers is similar to that of your complexion. Takes the guesswork out of drying lipsticks and lip gloss. Follow Dave on Instagram PAULA HOLMES, LIFESTYLE BLOGGER AT LDNDIARIES.COM My makeup tip would be to cover your beauty blender or sponge with primer, that way when applying foundation, the sponge won’t soak up as much product!' Follow Paula on Instagram IVY BOYD, BEAUTY WRITER AT WAKEUPFORMAKEUP.COM My top beauty tip is to choose the right colours for your undertone and eye colour. For fresh tone eyes like blue, grey and greyish greens, choose warm shades like copper, gold, rosy browns. For warm eyes like deep brown, hazel and warm green, warm tones still look great, but you can also play with more taupes, charcoals and navy. If your skin tone is more yellow, look for warmer blush colours and if more pink undertones, peachy pinks and rose shades work without adding too much excess redness. Follow Ivy on Instagram ROMY SCHORR, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT ROMYRAVES.COM One of my favs is to use a champagne-hued shimmer shadow stick (like Nars Goddess Velvet Shadow Stick) in the inner corner of your eyes to make them look awake, radiant and sparkly. Follow Romy on Instagram COURTNEY TAMPA, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT PHYRA.NET My best makeup tip would be to make sure your face primer and foundation match! Using the wrong products together can cause your foundation to wear off faster. I have a video about it here. Follow Courtney on Instagram PAYAL THAKER, BEAUTY WRITER AT YOURBEAUTYPAL.COM I like my makeup to look 'lived in' like it has a story to tell. I firmly believe our makeup should look effortless, like it's part of our personality and not something that we own to cover up our character. I like to use more cream products and fewer powder products. It adds glow and luminosity to my face. Powders tend to make me older and make my face look cakey and chalky, which is not a turn on. Follow Payal on Instagram MARINA, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT MAKEUP4ALL.COM I am a firm believer in the transforming power of the right eyelash curlers; they are [makeup] life changes. Try a pair of the industry's cult ones from Shu Uemura or the new loves like Surratt or Charlotte Tilbury, and you will never want to be without them. It takes only several seconds, but the results last for the whole day. Beauty wise - invest in the best serum you can afford, which is suitable for your skin type, and always cleanse your skin correctly. Follow Marina on Instagram COSMETICS & SKIN BEAUTY TIPS SIMONE PARTNER, AWARD-WINNING BLOGGER AT ELTORIA.COM My top beauty tip is to invest a good skincare routine. I often get asked how I manage to keep my skin looking so bright, and it is simple; avoid wearing foundation, drink plenty of water and be smart with your beauty products. Some beauty products are terrible for you; for example, the amount of alcohol in makeup wipes is astonishing. Instead, I like to take a damp cotton pad and use Johnson's Baby Lotion- it does a much better job than makeup wipes anyway! Follow Simone on Instagram LINA CAMERON, MAKEUP ARTIST AND NATURAL BEAUTY COACH AT LINACAMERON.COM Getting the skin looking fresh and "like skin" is so essential and is the foundation for the rest of your makeup. Take time to research and try different brands and formulas until you find the one that "melts" into your skin perfectly. (I particularly love Chantecaille's Just Skin tinted moisturiser!) Always curl your lashes as this allows more light into your eyes and makes them look bigger, sparkly and more awake. And finally, to brighten your face, red lipstick is always an AMAZING choice! My favourite is Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in 02, 06 and 07 Follow Lina on Instagram RISI-LEANNE BARANJA, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT PALACINKA.COM My number one beauty tip is adding a hydrating mist to your skincare routine. After cleansing, hydrating mists rebalance skin and prepare it for a moisturiser or hydrating primer. I can always see a big difference in how my makeup applies and sets when I use one. If your skin is dehydrated or you've been travelling in very cold dry aeroplanes, it can help keep it healthy-looking and glowing. There are useful mists at all price points, and some of my favourites are Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, Pixi Beauty Hydrating Milky Mist, Kiehls Cactus Flower & Tibetan Ginseng Mist and Josie Maran Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mist. Follow Risi-Leanne on Instagram CHRISTINE MIKESELL, BEAUTY ADDICT AT 15MINUTEBEAUTY.COM You need to have a simple skincare routine that you'll follow every day and not want to skip. You shouldn't be going to bed each day wearing makeup, and if you're skipping steps because it is too complicated, you won't be getting the benefits of the products you spent so much money. Most people fall into two camps with their eyebrows, those that leave them alone, and those that have "brows on fleek". You want to fall somewhere in the middle. A little cleaning up and filling in will all of your makeup look more professional and pulled together. Follow Christine on Instagram JENNIFER CHAN, STYLE EXPERT AT JENNCHANGLAM.COM I try to keep my skincare products as all-natural as possible and love face oils for day and night. I never skip the sunscreen and have been using eye cream since I was 16. I also got my brows micro bladed recently by Tiana Fox in L.A. and believe it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life! I finally have natural-looking yet strong brows, so even if I'm working out or just waking up, I still look pulled together. Follow Jenn on Instagram LAURA HADLEY, WRITER AT LAURAHADLEY.CO.UK My favourite beauty tip would be to use exfoliating products without breaking the bank. Buy a two-pack of exfoliating gloves from a pound store or a similar store, and you can use them all over the body. I love using the glove with a cleanser on my face to clear away dead skin cells and sebum. Still, you can use them to exfoliate the legs before tanning, the lips (gently) before applying lipstick, the heels to make them soft and even to get rid of glitter left after a sparkly bath bomb. They’re so cheap but last for ages and saves you a ton of money in comparison to using exfoliating brushes that are for just one area. Follow Laura on Instagram HANNAH RANDALL, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT LIPPYINLONDON.COM Take time for yourself every day (even if it's just a couple of minutes) to properly cleanse and moisturise and give yourself a little facial massage at the same time. Using an acid exfoliant after cleansing can also make a world of difference and bring a lovely glow to your skin. Still, the most important thing is to take some time out for yourself each day dedicated to looking after your complexion and recognising the importance of self-care. Follow Hannah on Instagram EMMA CAMPBELL, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT WHATEMMADID.COM My number 1 beauty tip is always to apply your eye cream before your moisturiser. When you use your moisturiser all over your face first, it acts as a barrier for your eye cream to sink in and work, which is why moisturiser should always be the final step. And remember, a tiny bit of cream goes a long way! Follow Emma on Instagram HEATHER NIXON, WRITER AT OFBEAUTYANDNOTHINGNESS.CO.UK If you suffer from dry skin, then apply your favourite moisturising face mask or a thick layer of your night cream while in the bath, so the steam allows the product to absorb and help to give a moisture boost profoundly. - Give the tired-looking eye a lift with a refreshing eye cream, light-reflecting concealer and a skin tone eyeliner on the waterline to make the eye look less red, bigger and more awake. Follow Heather on Instagram SARAH BROCK, CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST AT SARAHBMAKEUP.CO.UK My top makeup tips is to invest money in good skincare and makeup bases (foundation/ concealer/ powder). Cut costs on colour products (eyes/ cheeks/ lips), but getting the bottom right is essential - if your makeup base looks good, anything else you apply after will look so much better. Also make sure that when you apply your foundation and concealer that you use it in thin, even layers for the most natural look and don't overdo the powder - apply where needed on the t-zone and also on the eyelids to prevent eyeshadow from creasing. Follow Sarah on Instagram HENNA SINGH, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT CANADIANBEAUTY.COM My number one beauty tip is to take care of your skin by getting lots of sleep, drinking lots of water, and washing it every night. Follow Henna on Twitter KLAIRE DE LYS, BEAUTY WRITER AT KLAIREDELYS.COM My number one beauty tip is to take care of your skin by getting lots of sleep, drinking lots of water, and washing it every night. Follow Klaire on Instagram TANESHA AWASTHI, FASHION & BEAUTY WRITER AT GIRLWITHCURVES.COM My number one beauty tip is always to wear sunscreen. Lots of women skip SPF because they assume their skin won't be affected by the sun since they aren't in direct sunlight at a beach, for instance. But the fact is that even on an overcast or cloudy day, as well as indoors, the sun still has a significant effect on the skin, so sunscreen is a must at all times, every single day. Follow Tanesha on Instagram LARA EURDOLIAN, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT PRETTYCONNECTED.COM My #1 tip will always be to wear an SPF 30 daily, but on a more fun note, I wear a lip stain and lip liner under my lipstick so even if my lipstick comes off during the day, I'm covered! Follow Lara on Instagram SHARON HAVER, STYLE WRITER AT FOCUSONSTYLE.COM My favourite beauty tip is to ALWAYS take care of your skin- nothing overly complicated, just a stable daily skincare regime. From an early age, I've used skincare products to both maintain elasticity and hold off signs of ageing. Products range from high end to drugstore; what matters is that they work for your skin at that point in your life. Find a go-to product or two and then don't be afraid to try new things to keep it exciting and up to date. After that, say yes to a good primer that makes your makeup go on smoother and look more natural! Follow Sharon on Twitter JEN THORNE, EDITOR AT BEAUTYJUNKIELONDON.COM "I have two essential makeup tips when it comes to beauty and make-up. One is drinking more water - it's simple but works wonders for your skin! The next is always spend the most time on your base - as when your foundation/base is perfected; everything else is more comfortable. I love using a Beauty Blender (always damp, not dry!) to apply foundation and blend as nothing else gives as natural a finish Follow Jen on Instagram SUNNY SUBRAMANIAN, WRITER AT VEGANBEAUTYREVIEW.COM Beautiful skin starts from within. For a healthy, youthful and natural glow, be sure to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and eat lots of nutrient-dense fruits and veggies. Follow Sunny on Instagram ANNALEE BELLE, MODEL AND PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST My number one beauty tip is to have great skincare. Any makeup (drugstore included) applied to nurtured skin will always look better than if applied to the neglected skin. A basic skincare routine should consist of a makeup remover and cleanser, moisturiser (yes, even for oily skin!), and during the day, a sunscreen. Anything beyond this is optional, but can significantly increase the appearance of your skin. It is essential to have a skincare professional involved with your decisions if you need help with specific issues such as acne, dark spots, or fine lines. Never be afraid to ask questions about particular concerns. After all, the skin you have is yours for the rest of your life! Follow Annalee on Instagram ELESIE, AWARD WINNING BEAUTY BLOGGER AT ELSIEONLINE.COM My number one beauty tip is to always look after your skin from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water, eating fresh fruit and veg and using good quality skincare and supplements give your skin the optimum canvas for the perfect makeup. Follow Elesie on Instagram ERIKA FOX, BEAUTY BLOGGER AT RETRO-FLAME.COM I think my main beauty tip would be to develop a good skincare routine as early as possible, ensuring you are wearing SPF every day also. I feel it is so important to look after your skin from a young age, even if you are not prone to blemishes. It's something I have only learned more about in the last two years since struggling with my skin, and I now wish I had done it years ago. Find products that suit your skin type and work for you. Another big tip that ties in with that would be never to work out or sleep with your makeup on! Follow Erika on Instagram NEALA OLIVIA, BEAUTY WRITER AT NEALAOLOVIA.BLOGSPOT.CO.UK My number one beauty tip is to take care of your skin so that you can forego makeup tips at times. I like products with minimum to no alcohol and ones that have natural ingredients like lavender and rose, which keep my skin soft and hydrated. Also, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes. Good luck with the post. Follow Neala on Instagram SARAH WONG,FASHION & BEAUTY BLOGGER AT TEMPORARY-SECRETARY.COM Treat your skin to an exfoliator and face mask once or twice a week. The exfoliator will unclog your pores and scrub away dead skin cells to reveal brighter, more radiant-looking skin. Follow it up with a face mask which will help prevent a breakout, close pores, and leave your skin in the best possible condition. Follow Sarah on Instagram TEREZA KOHUTOVA, LIFESTYLE WRITER AT CITYSCAPE-BLISS.COM Recently I've discovered the magic of derma-rolling. Rolling a tiny wheel with hundreds of steel needles puncturing your skin doesn't sound all that appealing (perhaps a little scary even!) but it's one of the best things that have ever happened to my skin. I can see a massive difference in the texture of my skin every time I use it - it smoothes out all the fine lines, fades even the clingiest of blemishes and gives my skin a massive radiance boost! I love pairing it with Vitamin E or C serum or organic rosehip oil. Follow Tereza on Instagram ALICE HART-DAVIS, BEAUTY JOURNALIST AT ALICEHARTDAVIS.COM AND CREATOR OF GOODTHINGSBEAUTY.COM Wear sunscreen — every day. I know you’ll think this is boring, I know you’ll think you hardly need to bother, especially not at the tail end of winter in the gloomy old UK, but seriously, protecting your skin from the ultraviolet rays that it is exposed to in everyday daylight - not just in bright sunshine - is the best thing you can do for your complexion. Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen will dramatically reduce the effect that UVA rays - the ageing ones, the ones that pass through the glass - have on your skin, so, ten years down the line, your skin will not have as many lines and wrinkles and pigmentation marks as it would otherwise have gained. And you’ll have done it a favour by guarding skin’s DNA against the sort of damage that can eventually lead to skin cancers, too. Follow on Alice on Instagram REBECCA GOODYEAR, BLOGGER AT BITEABLEBEAUTY.COM 1) Invest in supplements. If your skin is drier than it should be, the chances are you are deficient in one or more of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Potassium or Essential Fatty Acids, so it may be wise to invest in a decent multivitamin (I love Terranova Living Multinutrient). Besides a high-quality multivitamin and mineral, I consider the crucial supplements for healthy skin to be - Essential Fatty Acids - help maintain moisture in the skin. Diatomaceous Earth - this mineral is 89% silica, which is essential for healthy skin. If we are deficient in silica collagen in our skin breaks down more quickly, causing dullness and tired-looking skin. Nails will also be stronger with regular doses of Diatomaceous Earth. MSM, or Methylsulphonylmethane, keeps hair glossy and skin tone even, smooth and youthful. Nails will grow quicker, as well as stronger. Sulphur is also essential for cell regeneration and renewal. 2) Choose what you put on your skin wisely. When it comes to skincare products, avoid chemically-heavy products. Most mass-market products contain mineral oils, which leave a film of oil on the skin's surface, which only gives the appearance of softer, smoother, hydrated skin. Look for genuine natural products that contain nourishing ingredients that will feed the skin with essential vitamins and minerals. Products that contain nutrient-dense oils such as olive and avocado, or butter such as shea and cocoa will hydrate, nourish and protect the skin and also deliver ingredients essential for healthy skin to the dermis. Always look for products that suit your skin type; natural products are targeted these days. Once you find a regime that suits you stick with it. Always use an alcohol-free cleanser to prevent skin from drying out. If your skin is oily, don't be afraid to use a face oil as certain oils will balance the fat in the skin. Look for jojoba oil which is very similar in structure to our skin's sebum and will trick the skin into not overproducing oil.
