Hello Monday.

January 31 2022

Speakeasy and drink freely at these bars 🥃

Portland’s long, boozy history is loaded with bootleggers + speakeasies, and a
bit of that lore can still be found around town if you know where to look. At
these fine establishments, you’ll find a certain Prohibition-era glamour or
arcane allure, and sometimes, a cheers-worthy mix of the two.

🍸 Voysey | 710 SE 6th Ave.

Secreted away beneath Loyal Legion, at the bottom of a staircase marked by a
neon sign in the shape of a candle lamp, you’ll encounter a space adorned with
curiosities + eccentric wallpapers, all influenced by the illustrious designer
C.F.A. Voysey. Here, scintillating signature cocktails and large-format
beverages (think drinks for the table) are sure to wet your whistle — and desire
for adventure.

This is one trip you want to take. | Photos by @voyseypdx

🍷 Les Caves | 1719 NE Alberta St.

Get a taste of the underground at this relaxed, subterranean wine bar. Grab a
chair at the counter, or climb into the alcove and sip your way through the
diverse bottle collection on a cozy couch.

🍾 Bible Club | 6716 SE 16th Ave.

From the outside, this unassuming yellow house (next to PDX Sliders) looks like
any other charming Sellwood neighborhood home. But stepping inside — no secret
password is required — you travel back in time to the 1920s. Guests select their
libations from a dual menu; on The Old Testament, Penicillin (a delicious single
malt Scotch, ginger syrup, lemon + honey concoction) stands out, while The New
Testament’s Chartreuse Swizzle and Doily Dropper look and taste incredible in
the crystal glassware.

🍻 UnderBar | 1701 1/2 Broadway St., Vancouver

What says flaunting Prohibition — or celebrating the end of Dry January — like
crossing state lines? Touted as being located in the basement of the Broadway
Building where court-ordered AA meetings were once held, this lounge is a far
cry from its originally intended use. Still, the quality spirits, cuisine, and
events like bingo + live music are far less sobering.

Wherever you decide to partake, make sure to check hours + reservation policies
ahead of time.

POST OF THE DAY

Money money money money … Monday!

📸 @oregonhistoricalsociety

In 1849, when Oregon City businessmen needed currency to conduct their
enterprises they said, leave it to beaver (coins), and formed the Oregon
Exchange Company. Gold pieces, minted in five and ten-dollar denominations,
became the loot of the land, but their present-day value was short-lived. When
the San Francisco federal mint opened in 1854, the Oregon Territory was
connected to the shared US monetary system, and most of these prizes were
rounded up and melted down.

Few survived, so they are quite the rarity for numismatists — you know, people
who study or collect coins, tokens, and paper money. If you want to add one to
your own personal treasure trove, you better bring a chunk of change. They are
worth between $37,000-$225,000 in today’s market.

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: I was always one of those kids who loved to collect everything
from rocks to smashed pennies, and even those stickers from the machine at the
pizza parlor. Though, my passion for gathering interesting items is nothing
compared to Vancouver’s Dawdah Bah, who's collected 2,000+ books to open a store
in his hometown in the country of Gambia.
