Time for another #WhatWeDoWednesdays throwback.

Did you know that Bus drivers were known as Gear-Jammers? The drivers were
called “Jammers” because they could be heard “Jamming” the gears of the buses
when the buses had standard transmissions. The park’s yellow touring buses first
rolled onto Yellowstone’s byways in the 1920s. At the height of their popularity
within Yellowstone in the mid-1920s, more than 400 of the vehicles operated in
the park.

“Yellowstone loved to brag that they had a bus for every day of the year,” says
Leslie Quinn, an Interpretive Specialist. “Yellowstone had the second largest
bus fleet in the country in the mid-20s, second only to Greyhound.”

While smaller in number, Vintage White Motor Co. buses are still rolling today.
They take visitors on guided wildlife-watching tours, photo safaris, sunset
tours, and more. The distinctive antique yellow vehicles have retractable canvas
roofs and panoramic windows, making them ideal for sightseeing. Plus, they’re
really cool to ride around in.

Thanks to all our “Jammers” for ferrying visitors safely throughout Yellowstone
for 100 years!

Repost from @yellowstonenps: Heads Up! ANTICIPATE DELAYS for April 15 select
road opening in Yellowstone; Stay informed about park road status and weather
conditions.

Due to extremely heavy snow received this week in Yellowstone National Park, the
park’s efforts to open interior roads by April 15 has been delayed.

Crews are working to clear nearly a foot of snow and remove large drifts from
storms on Tuesday, April 12. Although progress has been made, the normal opening
schedule will be altered.

The park will attempt to open the following road segments Apr 15 as scheduled:
- West Entrance to Old Faithful
- Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris

However, more snow is forecasted in the park tonight with the potential for
freezing rain over the weekend.

Other road segments will open as conditions allow.

The road between the North Entrance, Mammoth Hot Springs and Northeast Entrance
is open year-round.

The public should be prepared to alter their park travel plans depending on
weather conditions which could change rapidly. In-park services are very
limited.

Crews will continue making every effort to ensure a safe road opening for the
2022 season.

Stay informed about up-to-date road conditions in Yellowstone:
- Visit go.nps.gov/YellRoads.
- Call (307) 344-2117 for a recorded message.
- Sign up to receive Yellowstone road alerts on your mobile phone by texting

Ruth Quinn has spent summers in the Park’s interior for 32 years, including 25
years conducting tours of Old Faithful Inn. Her winters are spent in the
Gardiner, MT Human Resources office.

She recently co-authored "Horses, Hotels, and Hospitality: Harry W. Child’s Epic
Vision for Yellowstone Park." Harry Child came into the park with stagecoach
transportation in 1892 and ultimately built and shaped the tradition of service
enjoyed in Yellowstone today.

Last week she did a virtual presentation for the Yellowstone Gateway Museum on
three generations of the Child Family. This was the kickoff for “Yellowstone
Perspectives,” a series hosted by the Museum every Wednesday in April in honor
of Yellowstone’s 150th.

Thanks to Ruth for her skills at combining old-time stories with historical
tidbits to tell the tales of Yellowstone!

Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic of Yellowstone's
thermal areas. The highest temperature yet recorded in any geothermal area in
Yellowstone was measured in a scientific drill hole at Norris: 459°F (237°C)
just 1,087 feet (326 meters) below the surface! There are very few thermal
features at Norris under the boiling point (199°F at this elevation).

After working at Southern Company for 35 years, Ken Darby retired in June 2021,
but he knew it wasn’t the end of his professional career. It was the start of a
journey that allowed him to use his experience for the greater good, while also
having the adventure of a lifetime.

“My dad and I took a trip to Yellowstone 20 years ago, and I noticed employees
around the park had name tags with their home states, so I asked them how they
were able to work at the park,” said Darby. “I learned that many of them were
retirees and seasonal workers. I was so intrigued, and I always felt it was
something I’d like to pursue if I ever had the opportunity.”

About two months after his retirement, Darby began thinking about things he
could do to use his skills, and the seasonal program at Yellowstone National
Park was the first thing he researched. The Risk and Sustainability specialist
position was a perfect match with Darby’s expertise and he began his adventure
at Yellowstone in 2021.

“Yellowstone is such an incredible place and I’ve wanted to come back to visit
for so many years,” said Darby. “This experience is so much better than a visit.
Even though I work 40 hours a week, it doesn’t feel like work when you walk
through a breathtaking scenery to go to the office or dining area, seeing elk,
bison, fox, mule deer and even a black bear along the way.”

Special thanks to alabamanewscenter.com for their spotlight on Ken!

Aloha to Christine, Regional Manager at Canyon Village! Christine is Hawaiian by
birth and was raised between Hawaii and Arizona. She’s been back & forth from
Montana/Yellowstone and Hawaii for over 25 years, graduated from the University
of Montana in Missoula, and has made Montana her year-round home for the last
six years.

Looking for another traveling adventure and being called to Yellowstone, she
ended up on the Xanterra employment site and thought … "why not… a summer would
be amazing." The rest is history and she ended up spending 10 summers and two
winters with Xanterra before returning home to Hawaii. She reckons she loves
living on active volcanoes!

Like most Yellowstone folks, "she loves the Park and the people who live
within." She also shares, "It is a special person to live so remotely and love
Yellowstone. My fondest memories are all about Yellowstone, the hiking, the
animals, the things no one else has seen unless you live and work in
Yellowstone."

Thanks to Christine and all our Regional Managers for their hard work and
dedication to making their respective villages the best they can be!

vehicles in Yellowstone's fleet.

Some vehicles under their care include 23 motorboats, 3 stagecoaches, 8 historic
