VIDEO TRANSCRIPT – NICK KALDAS, CHAIR, ROYAL COMMISSION INTO DEFENCE AND VETERAN
SUICIDE

The Royal Commission is pleased to be coming to South Australia this month.

As part of our visit, we’re meeting local Defence personnel at RAAF Base
Edinburgh, as well as veterans and their families, to hear about the issues
affecting them.

And we’re engaging with ex-service organisations to learn how they’re supporting
the men and women who’ve served our nation.

So far, we’ve received 230 submissions from across the state, highlighting
issues with overseas postings, discharge processes and difficulty transitioning
to civilian life. We’re also hearing about the significant challenges people
face when dealing with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

It’s not too late to share your experience with us. Submissions close on October
13 this year.

We’ll also hold a public hearing at Adelaide’s Hotel Grand Chancellor from July
17.

A key focus of this hearing will be workplace safety. We also expect to hear how
deployment, postings and career management can impact the mental health and
wellbeing of our servicemen and women.

The evidence will help inform our recommendations to Government. We’re
determined to make a compelling case for change that will make the Australian
Defence Force a safer and more supportive workplace.

Finally, we recognise that the Royal Commission’s presence in Adelaide may bring
up difficult emotions and memories for some.

Counselling and other support is available for anyone wishing to share their
story – just get in touch!

We look forward to seeing you in Adelaide.
