"Degenerate Art"

How Did the Nazi Regime Try to Reshape the Arts?

In labeling what kinds of artworks were "acceptable" for Germans, the Nazi Party
hoped to establish a clear break with the past: the "New Germany" would reject
the "decadent" culture of the Weimar Republic, claiming a revival of the "German
spirit." In 1937, an exhibition staged in Munich took aim at art identified
as "Jewish," "Bolshevist," or "Modernist." Within only six weeks, it received
nearly a million visitors.
