Cash back credit cards let consumers earn cash rewards on their everyday
purchases. Cash is king for many people, who prefer its simplicity and
flexibility.

The typical cash back credit card earns anywhere from 1% to 6% cash back on
spending. Some cards offer a flat rewards rate for all purchases, while other
cards offer bonus cash back in specific or rotating categories. Rewards usually
can be directly deposited into a bank account, used as a statement credit toward
purchases or converted as a check for you to deposit.

The best cash back credit cards earn an average of 2% cash back on all purchases
and typically come with no annual fee. If you have the credit score to qualify
for one of these cards, you should be able to earn this rate or higher. The key
is to find a cash back card (or a combination of cash back cards) that closely
matches your spending patterns.

Below is our breakdown of best cash back options for different types of
spenders.

Why we picked this card: The Chase Freedom Flexâ„  is the best of 5% cash back
cards because it’s potentially the most rewarding. In addition to 5% cash back
on rotating quarterly categories (up to $1,500 in qualified purchases each
quarter you activate), you also get 3% cash back on drugstores and dining, which
gives it an edge over its main competitor, the Discover it Cash Back. You can

activate the new bonus category every quarter, and be aware that after spending
$1,500 in the quarterly category, your earning rate for such purchases will drop
to 1% (meaning you can earn up to $75 cash back at the elevated rate each
quarter).

Examples of Chase’s bonus categories have included:

 * Wholesale clubs, select streaming services and internet, cable and phone
   services

Why we picked this card: The Chase Freedom Flexâ„  is the best of 5% cash back
cards because it’s potentially the most rewarding. In addition to 5% cash back
on rotating quarterly categories (up to $1,500 in qualified purchases each
quarter you activate), you also get 3% cash back on drugstores and dining, which
gives it an edge over its main competitor, the Discover it Cash Back. You can
also earn a generous sign-up bonus with a low spending requirement: Earn a $200
Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account
opening!.

ProsCons

5% cash back on rotating quarterly categories

3% cash back on dining and drugstore purchases

  No annual fee

  Large sign-up bonus

  Long intro APR

$1,500 spending cap for bonus categories

Bonus categories require activation each quarter

Foreign transaction fee: 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars

WHO'S THIS CARD BEST FOR?

If you want a solid ongoing cash back rate on dining and drugstore purchases,
and your spending also lines up well with the rotating categories, the Chase
Freedom Flexâ„  offers the chance to earn generous cash back. Just remember to
activate the new bonus category every quarter, and be aware that after spending
$1,500 in the quarterly category, your earning rate for such purchases will drop
to 1% (meaning you can earn up to $75 cash back at the elevated rate each
quarter).

Examples of Chase’s bonus categories have included:

 * Wholesale clubs, select streaming services and internet, cable and phone
   services
 * Gas stations and home improvement stores
 * Grocery stores, excluding Target and Walmart, and select streaming services

The Chase Freedom Flexâ„  does charge a 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars
foreign transaction fee, so leave it at home if traveling outside the country.
Also, before applying, make sure you’re aware of the Chase 5/24 rule — an
unwritten rule that essentially means Chase will deny your application for a
card if you’ve opened five or more cards from any issuer in the past 24 months.

CARD BENEFITS

 * Trip cancellation/interruption insurance

Earning rate: 2% cash back at Gas Stations and Restaurants on up to $1,000 in
combined purchases each quarter. 1% unlimited cash back on all other purchases -
automatically

Why we picked this card: If your credit is limited or poor and needs to be
rebuilt, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card could be an ideal choice. It
offers a more-than-decent cash back rate of 2% at restaurants and gas stations
(on up to $1,000 in quarterly spend) and 1% on everything else. Moreover,
Discover matches all the cash back you earn in the first year, for new
cardmembers. You do have to provide a security deposit, but Discover will review
your account monthly and potentially graduate you to an unsecured card after the
initial seven months.

ProsCons

Available to consumers with bad credit

  No annual fee

Earns cash back on every purchase

Matches cash back in the first year, for new cardmember

Ability to graduate to an unsecured card in as little as seven months

  Refundable security deposit required

  No traditional sign-up bonus

If you have poor/limited credit, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is one of
the best credit cards available to help you improve your score (as long as you
always pay on time and don’t max it out). It’s a secured credit card, meaning
you must submit a security deposit to the issuer in the amount of your desired
credit limit. This protects Discover in case you don’t pay back what you charge
to the card.

Where the Discover it® Secured Credit Card stands head and shoulders above the
competition is guaranteed monthly reviews to see if you qualify to get your
deposit back. Other cards may offer the chance to graduate from a secured card
to an unsecured one, but don’t typically offer such transparency on when account
reviews are conducted. But know that your behavior on other financial accounts,
not just accounts with Discover, can also impact your eligibility.

You can also get your deposit refunded if you pay off your card in full and
close the account.

WHO'S THIS CARD BEST FOR?

CARD BENEFITS

 * Access to your FICO® Score for free
 * Free alerts if your Social Security number is found on the dark web
   (enrollment required)
 * Easily freeze and unfreeze your card online or in the mobile app
 * Customer service based 100% in the United States

WHAT IS A CASH BACK CREDIT CARD?

Cash back credit cards earn rewards that are easily redeemable for cash.
Usually, the rewards rate is expressed as a percentage of spend (e.g., 4% back
on gas), and the rewards that accumulate in your account are denoted in dollars.

Tip: Some cards earn flexible points that are redeemable for cash as well as
other rewards. Some of the best cash back credit cards technically earn points
rather than cash rewards (like the Chase Freedom Unlimited). When you can redeem
these points for cash back at a value of 1 cent per point, these cards are
effectively cash back cards.

Most cash back credit cards allow you to redeem rewards in multiple ways:

 * Statement credit toward purchases made with the card (the most common option)
 * Direct deposit
 * Paper check by mail
 * Into a bank account at the issue bank
 * ATM withdrawal

TYPES OF CASH BACK CREDIT CARDS

 * Flat-rate cash back credit card — Flat-rate cash back credit cards earn cash
back at the same rate on every purchase. The rewards rate is typically
between 1% and 2%. A great example is the Wells Fargo Active cash card, which
earns 2% cash back on every purchase.
 * Rotating cash back credit card —– Other cash back cards offer bonus cash back
on categories that change on a monthly or quarterly basis. Examples include
the Chase Freedom Flex and a number of Discover cards. Some category cards
adapt to your spend each month, applying a bonus rate to the category with
the most spend (e.g., the Citi Custom Cash Card). Some of the highest cash
back credit earning rates are associated with rotating category cards.
 * Tiered category card — Many cards offer tiered rewards categories. These
cards offer bonus cash back on certain categories of spend and 1% cash back
on the remainder of your purchases. For example, cards that offer 3% or
higher cash back rates on dining, gas or grocery spend are common.

SHOULD YOU APPLY FOR A CASH BACK CREDIT CARD?

For most people with sufficiently good credit, a cash back credit card is ideal.
These cards offer the simplest program structure. Earning and redeeming rewards
is very straightforward. Many cash back credit cards have no annual fee, making
them cheaper across the board than travel credit cards.

However, if you travel frequently, a cash back credit card might not be for you.
In many cases, you can get more value out of airline and hotel credit cards than
you would if you used a cash back credit card instead, especially if you know
how to maximize these points. Airline and hotel cards also often provide you
with valuable loyalty perks you wouldn’t receive with a cash back card.

There are general credit card pitfalls to consider as well. If you’re not sure
you will pay off your balance every month, then you should either use cash or
your debit card instead, as using a credit card will cost you more in the long
run as you pay monthly interest. The APR for rewards cards tends to be higher
than cards that don’t earn rewards. If you tend to forget to pay off your card,
then a card such as the Citi Simplicity with no penalty rate and no late fees is
a reasonable option.

Other card categories to consider:

 * Credit cards with 0% interest rates
 * Balance transfer credit cards
 * Credit cards for building credit

CASH BACK VS. POINTS AND MILES

For those who travel and are savvy with points and miles, points and miles can
be far more valuable than cash back. For example, a card that earns 3X miles
that can be redeemed at a value of 2.5 cents each offers more value to a
knowledgeable consumer. This is effectively a 7.5% rewards rate, which is better
than any of the best cash back credit cards on this page.

It can take more work, however, to maximize the value of hotel points and
airline miles. Cash back credit cards are far simpler.

PROS AND CONS OF CASH BACK CREDIT CARDS

 * Simple rewards with straightforward value
 * Many cash back cards have no annual fee
 * Often have easy-to-earn sign-up bonuses
 * Can offset the cost of your purchases by redeeming cash back as a statement
   credit

 * To offset travel costs, a travel card earning points might be better
 * Cash back cards don’t typically offer premium travel protections
 * APRs on cash back cards can be higher than on no-frills credit cards

HOW TO CHOOSE A CASH BACK CREDIT CARD

Now that you’ve seen some of the best cash back credit cards, let’s walk through
how to pick the perfect card for you. You’ll need some information on hand,
including your credit score and an estimate of how much you spend monthly in
various expense categories.

1. FIGURE OUT WHICH CARDS YOU QUALIFY FOR

Your credit score and history are the primary factor in determining which cash
back credit cards you can qualify for. Many of the best cash back cards require
excellent credit, which in FICO Score terms is a score of 740 or greater.
Depending on the card and issuer, you’ll also have to meet other eligibility
criteria, such as having sufficient income and not having opened too many credit
cards within a certain timeframe.

If you have good but not excellent credit, you should still qualify for a decent
number of cards, but some of the best cash back cards will not be available to
you, such as the Chase Freedom Flexâ„ .

The options will be quite limited if your credit is fair or poor, so you may
want to consider a card for rebuilding your score instead.

 * 580-669 is fair credit
 * 670-739 is good credit
 * 740-799 is very good credit
 * 800-850 is exceptional credit

 * 300-499 is very poor credit
 * 500-600 is poor credit
 * 601-660 is fair credit
 * 661-780 is good credit
 * 781-850 is excellent credit

Make sure you read the fine print of each offer. Even if you have great credit,
some issuers have other eligibility criteria you must meet. For example, Chase
has a “5/24” rule that may prevent you from being approved for a new Chase card
if you have opened five or more personal credit cards from any issuer in the
last 24 months (this is an unwritten rule). Similarly, Citi and American Express
have restrictions on welcome offer eligibility for new card accounts.

2. DECIDE WHAT LEVEL OF MAINTENANCE IS RIGHT FOR YOU

One of the primary appeals of cash back credit cards is their simplicity. Some
people only want a single card. If this is you, you’re likely to be better off
with a flat-rate cash back card. If you’re willing to do a bit more legwork and
tracking of bonus categories to maximize rewards, you’ll find that a tiered
category card may suit you better. Rotating category credit cards are the
toughest to manage, as the categories change, but they can provide an excellent
return.

Tip: If you’re willing to do some work, having multiple cash back credit cards
is the way to maximize your rewards. Pick a tiered category card that matches
your typical spending patterns and supplement it with a flat-rate cash back card
for non-category purchases. Consider adding a rotating 5% cash back credit card
to use strategically each quarter.

3. FIND REWARDS THAT MATCH YOUR SPENDING PATTERNS

Ultimately, you want to maximize your rewards rate, and that means tailoring
your cash back credit card pick(s) to your spending. Several cards offer bonus
spending on gas and grocery. However, if you live in New York City and don’t
have a car, bonus cash back at gas stations is useless. Likewise, if you shop
for food at superstores such as Walmart and Target, you won’t necessarily earn
the bonus since those stores are typically excluded. You’ll have to figure out
which cards offer bonus cash back in categories where you spend the most.

Popular bonus categories:

 * Groceries
 * Restaurants
 * Gas
 * Business purchases

Tip: Sometimes a cash back card for a specific retailer can be the best choice
if you do a large amount of shopping at a single store chain, such as Costco or
Walmart. A card such as the Capital One® Walmart Rewards® Card that earns 5% at
Walmart.com and 2% on in-person Walmart transactions could be the perfect fit,
if that’s where you do the bulk of your shopping.

4. CALCULATE WHICH CASH BACK CREDIT CARD IS BEST FOR YOU

Once you’ve narrowed down the field of choices to a few options, you may want to
do a head-to-head comparison. Take into account the various bonus categories and
how much you typically spend in each either monthly or yearly. For example, if
you spend approximately $500 in groceries each month and use a 2% flat-rate cash
back card to buy them, you’ll earn $120 in cash back each year.

Example: 12 months x $500 per month x $0.02 rewards rate = $120

It’s good to consider the value of any sign-up bonuses as well, but note that
these only affect the first year value. A card without a sign-up bonus could be
better in the long run.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

SIGN-UP BONUS

A card’s sign-up bonus is often what attracts people to a specific card. Many of
our top cash back credit cards have a bonus in the neighborhood of $200. Make
sure that you can meet the required spend to earn the sign-up bonus. Ideally,
you’ll find a card that has both a decent sign-up bonus and offers good earning
rates for your specific situation.

EARNING RATE

The earning rate is usually the most essential feature of a cash back card. If
you want a flat-rate cash back card, make sure you select one that earns 2% on
everything. If a tiered card fits your spending patterns, pick one that has the
highest earning rate in those categories.

ANNUAL FEE

You’ll want to estimate how much cash back you’ll earn with each card and weigh
that against the annual fee. There are many great cash back credit cards without
an annual fee, but you may come out farther ahead by opting for a card with an
annual fee. For example, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
earns 6% back on U.S. supermarket purchases, while the Blue Cash Everyday® Card
from American Express only earns 3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases
(redeemable for statement credits). Both cards have a $6,000 annual cap on the
U.S. supermarket bonus. If you reach this cap, you would earn $360 on U.S.
supermarket purchases with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
and only $180 with the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. The
annual fee is well worth it in this case.

0% APR

If you are carrying a large balance on another credit card, you may want a cash
back credit card that offers an extended period of 0% APR for balance transfers.
You’ll pay a fee, but it could be less than the interest you’ll pay in the long
run. Likewise, if you have an upcoming large purchase, such as materials for a
home remodel, a card that offers a 0% intro APR for purchases may give you the
time you need to pay it off.

OTHER BENEFITS

Finally, some cards offer additional features, such as purchase protection,
extended warranty protection, travel insurance protections and no foreign
transaction fees. If these features are important to you, make sure you find a
card that offers them.

ARE CASH BACK CREDIT CARDS WORTH IT?

If you pay your balance off in full every month, then yes — cash back credit
cards are worth using. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month on a card that
earns a flat 2% cash back, that’s $20 in cash back. However, if you carry a
balance, interest charges will likely outweigh any cash back you earn,
especially because some cash back cards have higher APRs than simple, no-frills
credit cards.

It’s also important to consider whether or not the card you’re thinking about
applying for charges an annual fee, and whether you’ll earn enough cash back to
recoup the annual fee. For instance, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American
Express charges a $95 annual fee. If you spend at least $132 a month on
purchases that earn 6% cash back, you’ll cover the annual fee.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CASH BACK CARD

 * Pair two or more cash back credit cards to maximize your earning. For
example, pick a good flat-rate card such as the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18
month BT offer and the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card for
   dining and grocery.
 * Choose at least one flat-rate cash back card that earns at least 2% cash
back. This should be your benchmark rewards rate for all non-bonus spend.
 * Open at least one card with rotating 5% quarterly categories. These cards may
have a cap on spend eligible for bonus rewards, but it’s hard to beat a 5%
   return.
 * Tailor your card choices to your spending patterns. Drive a lot? Consider a
card that earns bonus cash back at gas stations, such as the PNC Cash
Rewards® Visa® Credit Card that earns 4% cash back at the pump, on up to
   $8,000 in annual spend.
 * Pair a no-annual-fee Chase card with a premium Chase card. If you have a
premium Chase travel card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the
points you earn with a card such as the Chase Freedom Flexâ„  are far more
   valuable.
 * Choose no-annual-fee cards unless you’re certain you’ll get a greater return
from the one that charges a fee. For example, you have to spend $9,500 more
with the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card versus the Capital One
SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card to justify the $95 annual fee of the
   former.
 * Pick at least one card that does not charge foreign transaction fees and is
preferably a Visa, to provide the easiest usage and lowest cost when
   traveling abroad.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO CASH BACK CREDIT CARDS WORK?

There are different rewards structures for cash back cards, with some earning a
flat rate on every purchase, others earning elevated rates for purchases in
certain categories and still others offering higher cash back rates on rotating
bonus categories that change every quarter.

One nice thing about cash back cards is the simplicity of the rewards you earn.
When you earn points or miles, you have to evaluate what each point or mile is
worth for different redemption options. But if you earn a certain percentage of
cash back, you know immediately what that cash back will be worth when you
redeem it.

HOW DO YOU REDEEM CASH BACK REWARDS?

Typically, you can redeem cash back for checks, statement credits, deposits into
an eligible bank account or gift cards. Some cards allow you to redeem cash back
in any amount, while others have a minimum redemption amount of $25.

CAN YOU GET UNLIMITED CASH BACK?

There are cards that offer cash back with no spending limits. Other cards set a
limit on how much cash back you can earn at higher rates, then drop you down to
a 1% cash back rate once you hit quarterly or annual spending maximums.

IS THERE A CREDIT CARD THAT EARNS 2.5% OR 3% CASH BACK?

While it’s possible to find credit cards that earn 3% or more on certain
spending categories, if you want a flat-rate card that offers 2.5% or 3% back on
all purchases, you’re mostly out of luck. There is the Alliant Cashback Visa®
Signature Credit Card, which lets cardholders earn up to 2.5% cash back on your
first $10,000 of qualifying eligible purchases (1.5% for purchases over
$10,000). But you have to bank with Alliant Credit Union and meet certain
requirements to qualify for the 2.5% rate. For other flat-rate cards, the most
you’re likely to earn is 1.5% or 2% back.

WHAT CREDIT CARD GIVES THE MOST CASH BACK?

The credit card that will allow you to earn the most cash back depends on your
spending patterns and whether you prefer a flat-rate card that offers 1.5% to 2%
cash back on every purchase, a card that earns 5% cash back in rotating
categories (up to a quarterly maximum) or a card that offers a higher cash back
rate in popular spending categories, such as gas, dining or supermarkets.

For example, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earns 6% cash
back in certain categories — but if your budget doesn’t include much spending in
those categories, you might prefer a card that earns 2% back on all purchases,
like the Citi® Double Cash Card .

WHICH TYPE OF REWARDS IS BEST — POINTS, MILES OR CASH BACK?

That depends on what you want to get out of the card. For example, if you want
to earn rewards to help offset the cost of travel, a card that offers points or
miles may be the better choice. But if you don’t travel much, you’ll most likely
have an easier time tracking the value of your rewards with a cash back credit
card.

IS CREDIT CARD CASH BACK TAXABLE?

Typically, cash back earned on a credit card is not taxable because the IRS
considers it a rebate on what you’ve spent. However, if you receive a bonus
without having to do any spending to earn it, that’s considered taxable income.

WHAT IS A GOOD CASH BACK RATE?

Your cash back credit card should be earning a minimum 2% cash back on all
purchases. A card like the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer is a good
benchmark since it earns 2% back on everything and doesn’t charge an annual fee.
For cards that earn cash back in rotating categories, you should target one
offering a 5% to 6% cash back rate. If you’re only earning 1% cash back, you’re
leaving rewards on the table.

WHAT IS THE BEST CASH BACK CREDIT CARD?

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is our top pick from among the best cash back
credit cards. It earns cash an uncapped 1.5% cash back on all purchases but also
offers the flexibility to use those rewards in conjunction with other Chase
credit cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points.

However, we understand that these cards might not be the best fit for everyone.
Check out our list of cards above to help select the best cash back card for
your needs.

IS 5% CASH BACK GOOD?

Banks offer cash back credit cards to incentivize consumers to use their
products. Every transaction earns an issuing bank money, as they charge
merchants payment processing fees to accept cards. The bank can then use this
income to provide cash back rewards to consumers.

Banks are counting on many people carrying a balance, however, and the interest
charges will negate any rewards earned. Make sure you use your cash back credit
card wisely and pay off your statement balance every month.

IS CREDIT CARD CASH BACK TAXABLE?

Typically, cash back earned on a credit card is not taxable because the IRS
considers it a rebate on what you’ve spent. However, if you receive a bonus
without having to do any spending to earn it, that’s considered taxable income.

METHODOLOGY

We selected the best cash back credit cards through a review of cards available
on LendingTree and from top issuers. Factors included cash back rates, cash back
program structure and sign-up bonuses.

Additional factors included whether or not cards charge a foreign transaction
fee and/or an annual fee — most of the cards on this list charge no annual fee
or charge a reasonable fee that can be easily recouped by spending in cash back
categories.

Introductory APRs also factored into our selection, with many of the cards on
this list offering interest-free periods that can help finance a big purchase or
pay off a transferred balance. Finally, useful benefits such as cellphone
protection and extended warranty protection influenced our choices as well.
