Alan Mulally, former president and CEO Ford Motor Company, former president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and a current Google director – three giant global corporations which have changed the world – fits both categories. This global business chief had the Puget Sound Business Journal LIVE audience's rapt attention Wednesday morning as he answered questions about leadership, management, the global economy and so much more. To me, someone who knew him when he was an engineer at Boeing and before he was director of engineering on the 777, he hasn’t changed much. Just as he was then, he is still accessible, inclusive, passionate about whatever he is working on, excited about life, about serving and about sharing ideas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional coverage from Wednesday's event: Mulally recalls two major crisis events and how he responded to them 'Working together:' Mulally recalls Boeing, Ford in wide-ranging talk -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His signature grin is still as disarming. And while he can converse with ease with presidents and royalty and business magnates in any field, he still comes off as approachable, even homespun, with a sense of wonder. Not your typical business tycoon. I watched him turn one young man’s life around in the span of a few minutes this morning. At the back of a line of folks wanting to shake his hand, the man approached him wanting his autograph and some advice about school. After asking where he went to school, Mulally grinned and gave him some advice: study both engineering and finance, Mulally said, not one or the other. Then he offered the young man his email so they could keep in touch. During the program, as Mulally fielded questions from PSBJ Publisher Gordon Prouty and from the audience, I looked around to see many people writing down what he said. Much of the advice he gave was universal and could be applied across the widest swath of business, the professions and even in personal relations. Here are some of the 'Mulallyisms' from today: * Seek to understand, before you seek to be understood. * Hold two thoughts: What is the reality, and what do we want to create. * Put people first – include everybody. * Have a compelling vision, a comprehensive strategy and implement relentlessly. * Trust the process. * Facts and data set you free. * Have fun. In a side room later, during an interview I asked him for something few people know about him that he could share. “It’s this,” he told me, leaning forward. “I really like working with talented people to do something for a lot of people around our world.” RECOMMENDED Commercial Real Estate VANCOUVER REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER GETS PRISON, MUST REPAY $1M-PLUS FOR COVID-RELATED FRAUD Food & Lifestyle TOM DOUGLAS USHERS HIS RESTAURANT EMPIRE INTO NEW LEADERSHIP PHASE Commercial Real Estate SEATTLE DEVELOPER'S SMITH TOWER CONVERSION PLAN FAILED TO GAIN TRACTION I asked him how he saw his role in the future, and where. “I look forward to continuing to serve,” he said.
