Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

PETE CARROLL WANTS SEAHAWKS TO RE-SIGN GENO SMITH?

By Zac Wassink  |  Last updated 3/22/22

Quarterback Geno Smith made four appearances and three starts for the Seattle
Seahawks last fall when Russell Wilson was sidelined with an injury to the
middle finger on his throwing hand. Smith was then in headlines this past
January when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence roughly
two months before he was set to hit free agency, but Seahawks head coach Pete
Carroll nevertheless said back on March 2 he was open to bringing Smith back:

That, of course, was before the blockbuster trade that involved the Seahawks
sending Wilson to the Denver Broncos became official last Wednesday.

Carroll and company now have 2019 second-round draft pick Drew Lock and 2020
fourth-round selection Jacob Eason in their quarterback room, and the coach
repeated during a Tuesday appearance on local radio station Seattle Sports 710
he'd like to re-add Smith to the roster.

"I’d like to get Geno hooked up and get him back in. He showed us a good deal of
command of our offense when he played last year and he has a terrific
understanding of it so he’s out in front of the other guys that are involved in
the competition in that regard," Carroll explained, according to Josh Alper of
Pro Football Talk. "By the time he got a couple games under his belt after
sitting for three or four years, he functioned in the Jacksonville game as well
as you can function and he had a beautiful game there. And that looked like the
culmination of his return, kind of. And unfortunately we didn’t get to
capitalize to see what the next step would be because Russ came back and played.
But he popped the ball around, he was fast with the football and got it out and
did some really cool things."

Smith, 31, completed 65-of-95 total passes (68.4%) for 702 yards with five
touchdowns, one interception, and a record of 1-2 as QB1 last season.

Alper notes that Carroll admitted the Seahawks are also looking at "other
options." It's unclear if former Cleveland Browns starter Baker Mayfield is one
of those options as previously believed.

NHL CANCELS EVGENII DADONOV TRADE FROM GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO DUCKS

The NHL announced Wednesday afternoon the trade of right-wing Evgenii Dadonov
from the Las Vegas Golden Knights to the Anaheim Ducks has officially been
canceled. The Golden Knights attempted to trade Dadonov right at the trade
deadline at 3 p.m. EST on Monday, but the trade was held up because Anaheim was
on a no-trade list included in the 33-year-old's contract. The league had to
intervene late on Monday as it was pointed out the Ducks were on Dadonov's
no-trade list and that Vegas' actions were a break of contract. With the trade
voided, Vegas now has limited cap space to contend with. There is also the
question of what the rest of the season will look like for the Russian winger.
If the Golden Knights can't work out some kind of post-deadline deal -- if
that's possible -- does that leave Dadonov no choice but to play for a team that
doesn't want him? This story is ongoing.

REPORT: YANKEES, ALL-STAR SLUGGER AARON JUDGE STILL FAR APART IN CONTRACT TALKS

The MLB arbitration deadline has come and gone, but the New York Yankees and
slugger Aaron Judge aren't anywhere close to a deal for next season. The
question now is whether the two sides can reach a deal before Opening Day — at
which point Judge has made it very clear he won't continue talks until the
season concludes. As the New York Post explained, the two sides don't have to
stop talking just because the deadline has come and gone. However, they still
have to get a deal done quickly so the decision doesn't go to an arbitration
hearing. Judge has already said he won't be distracted during the season by
contract talks, so the clock is ticking to get something done before the
relationship between the organization and its star outfielder turns sour. It's
very easy to see why Judge, who will be a first-time free agent after this
season, wants his payday. The 29-year-old slashed .287/.373/.544 with a
team-leading 39 home runs on 158 hits last season. That kind of hitting power,
which has helped propel the Yankees up the American League ladder, is something
that should be rewarded. The Post also speculated that New York didn't make a
big splash in free agency because the team wants to put that money toward
locking down Judge. With that in mind, it seems odd Judge and Yankees are still
so far apart on a monetary figure. It is completely possible Judge and the
Yankees come to an agreement before first pitch on April 7. With how far apart
the two sides are, however, it will be a scramble to agree on an extension
before the season gets going.

LARRY NANCE JR. LIKELY TO MAKE PELICANS DEBUT ON THURSDAY

The last time that Larry Nance Jr. took the floor in an NBA game, he was in a
Portland Trail Blazers uniform. Now 11 weeks later — and just over six weeks
since being traded — it sounds like the former first-round pick is ready to make
his debut with his new team. Following two-plus seasons with the Los Angeles
Lakers and three-plus years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Nance Jr. was traded
to the Trail Blazers in August 2021 as part of a three-team deal that also
included the Chicago Bulls. The blockbuster sent former first team All-Rookie
Lauri Markkanen from Chicago to Cleveland and Derrick Jones Jr. from Portland to
Chicago as well, and included a host of future draft selections. Nance Jr.
played in 37 games (11 starts) with the Trail Blazers this season before
suffering a knee injury in early January that has sidelined him since. Nance Jr.
was acquired by the Pelicans on Feb. 8 along with star guard CJ McCollum and
veteran Tony Snell in exchange for a package of players and draft picks that
featured Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Josh Hart and others. With 10 games left in
their regular season, New Orleans has a 30-42 record, would be the No. 10 seed
if the season ended on Wednesday and is two games ahead of the 11th place San
Antonio Spurs for the final spot in the play-in tournament.

FALCONS GM TERRY FONTENOT EXPECTS TO ADD ANOTHER QB AFTER…

The Atlanta Falcons took a big swing at landing star quarterback Deshaun Watson
but missed when the three-time Pro Bowl selection waived his no-trade clause to
head to the Cleveland Browns. Atlanta reacted to that disappointment by trading
veteran and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis
Colts and then by signing 2015 second-overall draft pick Marcus Mariota to a
two-year deal. It appears Mariota is only penciled-in as Atlanta's QB1 ahead of
the upcoming draft. Per Kevin Patra of the league's website and Josh Alper of
Pro Football Talk, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot told reporters
Wednesday the team expects to add to its quarterback room and will explore all
options, including free agency, trades and the draft. Fontenot added, though,
that he will not "reach" for a signal-caller via the eighth-overall pick of this
year's player-selection process. "We're excited about Marcus Mariota, and we're
going to continue to add to that room," Fontenot explained. Out of five CBS
Sports analysts, only one (Pete Prisco) currently predicts Atlanta will use pick
No. 8 on a quarterback, specifically Liberty Flames product Malik Willis. The
Falcons could potentially go shopping for a surplus-to-requirements commodity
such as former Browns starter Baker Mayfield or San Francisco 49ers veteran
Jimmy Garoppolo, but it's possible Mayfield may ultimately hit free agency at
some point after the draft and be available at less than half of the $18.858
million in fully guaranteed money he's owed on the last season of his rookie
contract.

EARLY NFL PREDICTIONS: SUPER BOWL LVII FUTURE BETS

The dust has settled from the Rams' 23-20 Super Bowl LVI win over the Bengals on
a last-second defensive stop. We congratulate Los Angeles, but now is a great
time to scan the futures board and put down a ticket for next season's Super
Bowl champion. Much can and will change before the season starts. We have free
agency, the draft and any trades that may shake up the complexion of the league
(cough, Russell Wilson/Aaron Rodgers). Still, there's value out there, so here
are my three favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February in Glendale,
Arizona. San Francisco 49ers: +1500 on FanDuel The 49ers came a game short of
reaching the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, and I think they
offer some fantastic value at +1500 to win it all in 2023. There are a few keys
for me in these bets: impending free agency, salary cap flexibility and the
quarterback position. Based on a quick look through San Francisco's free agents
on Over the Cap, it would appear the core that has kept the 49ers so competitive
will remain intact. The X-factor here is quarterback. The expectation is that
Jimmy Garoppolo is traded before the beginning of next season, opening the door
for 2021 third overall pick Trey Lance to take over as the starter. Look at the
Bengals reaching the Super Bowl this year, the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl a
few seasons ago or the Eagles authoring a Super Bowl run in 2018. The
commonality? Each had a quarterback on a rookie contract. QBs take up so much of
the salary cap that by the time they sign their second contracts, their teams
are strapped for cash to fill out the rest of their rosters with high-end
talent. Assuming Garoppolo gets off the books and Lance shows himself to be a
strong quarterback, San Francisco is going to have the ability to put a strong
team on the field. I like this angle and the +1500 odds for the Niners.
Cincinnati Bengals: +2000 on FanDuel This is just a value play given this team
was just in the Super Bowl. In general, though, I'll use this space to write
about the AFC as a whole, which is by far the stronger conference moving
forward. Josh Allen/Buffalo and Patrick Mahomes/Kansas City are just the tip of
the iceberg. Justin Herbert and the Chargers feel due for a jump in the
standings, and the Ravens have pieces to be competitive. Then there are teams
like Tennessee and New England making things tough on anyone. Still, we can't
ignore +2000 odds on Cincinnati winning the big game. The Bengals have what I
covet above all: a quarterback on his rookie contract. Both Ja'Marr Chase and
Tee Higgins are also still on their rookie deals, which explains how Cincinnati
has the third-most cap space to play around with this offseason. The Bengals are
in a great position to add high-quality players through free agency to build a
stronger team. Think offensive line upgrades and secondary additions. This team
has a very real championship window and offers us the best value at this
juncture in the AFC. Philadelphia Eagles: +4000 on DraftKings I won't hide from
it, and I have no doubt you will laugh at this pick: I am an Eagles fan. There
is most definitely bias here, but I'm including Philly here as an option at
+4000 because I have this feeling the Eagles are going to ship out Jalen Hurts
and a few of their first-round picks to land Russell Wilson. Wilson would be a
major upgrade for this team at the most important position in sports, and I do
wonder if the Eagles see what the Rams just did (trading for Matthew Stafford)
and think that's their best path to win another Super Bowl. This team has one of
the best offensive lines in football, young offensive players with room to
become some of the best at their positions in DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert,
and plenty of cap space to add new pieces. This bet is simply projecting a
Wilson trade, with a splash of fandom bias included.

BLUE JAYS, GOLD GLOVE 3B MATT CHAPMAN AGREE TO TWO-YEAR, $25 MILLION…

Less than one week after acquiring three-time Gold Glove third baseman Matt
Chapman in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, the Toronto Blue Jays made sure
the new face stays north of the border for at least the next couple of seasons.
The two-time Platinum Glove winner joins a stacked Toronto infield that also
includes Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. As Opening Day
approaches, many fans and experts alike have been calling the Blue Jays the
favorite not only in the AL East, but one of the top contenders in the entire
American League. The Athletics selected Chapman with the 25th overall pick in
the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft, and he made his big-league debut in 2017. After
playing 84 games that year, Chapman became Oakland's full-time starter at the
hot corner in 2018, collecting a career-high 152 hits and 42 doubles, while
posting career-bests in batting average (.278), on-base percentage (.356) and
on-base plus slugging percentage (.864) as well. Chapman earned his first Gold
Glove that season and finished seventh in the AL MVP voting. He was even better
during the 2019 campaign. In 2019, the Victorville, Calif. native posted
career-highs in games played (156), at-bats (583), home runs (36), RBI (91) and
runs scored (102), while finishing sixth in the MVP voting, earning his second
straight Gold Glove and making his lone All-Star team of his career thus far.
The 28-year-old Chapman led the AL in defensive wins above replacement (WAR) in
both 2018 and 2019 at 2.9 and 3.3, respectively. After recording 10 home runs
and 25 RBI over the truncated 2020 campaign, Chapman's production dipped in
2021, as he finished with 27 home runs, 72 RBI, 75 runs, 111 hits, just a
.210/.314/.403 slash line and a career-high 202 strikeouts, though he also
finished with a career-high 80 walks.

PANTHERS REPORTEDLY NOT INTERESTED IN BROWNS QB BAKER MAYFIELD

The news seemingly only gets worse for Baker Mayfield on a daily basis in the
early stages of spring. Mayfield lost his starting job Friday when reports
surfaced the Cleveland Browns had completed a trade with the Houston Texans for
controversial star signal-caller Deshaun Watson. The 2018 first-overall draft
pick was quickly linked with clubs in need of assistance at the sport's most
important position, specifically the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. One
of those teams may already have removed itself from such discussions, according
to ESPN's David Newton. The Panthers are one of several clubs that missed out on
Watson and could use an upgrade over Sam Darnold. However, multiple mock drafts
currently predict Carolina will spend the sixth-overall selection of the
upcoming draft on former Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett, who
presumably would rise to the top of the depth chart this summer and not compete
with a veteran such as Darnold or Mayfield. Per reports shared Monday, the
Browns are in no rush to jettison Mayfield for pennies on the dollar, and no
team has yet matched any rumored asking price for the 26-year-old owed $18.858
million in fully guaranteed money for the 2022 campaign via the fifth-year
option attached to his rookie contract. Mayfield's perceived value is currently
so low, it's believed the Browns could ultimately cut him and open the door for
a team such as the Pittsburgh Steelers to sign him on a discounted deal.
Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints all
added quarterbacks on Monday and, thus, have no reason to trade any assets for
Mayfield before the draft.

MAVERICKS ALL-STAR GUARD LUKA DONČIĆ OUT WEDNESDAY VS. ROCKETS…

With just 10 games left on their regular season schedule and currently sitting
in the fifth spot in the Western Conference at 44-28, the Dallas Mavericks are
entering the most critical period of the campaign. They've not yet secured a
playoff berth, but it would take a collapse of epic proportions to fall out of
the mix completely. However, with the sixth-place Denver Nuggets only two games
behind Dallas and the upstart Minnesota Timberwolves just 2.5 game back in
seventh, Luka Dončić and company are looking to avoid the dreaded play-in
tournament. When the team hosts the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, they'll still
be without the likes of guard Tim Hardaway Jr. (who's been out since January
with a foot injury) among others, as well as Dončić. Fortunately for the
Mavericks, the Rockets are a league-worst 18-54, including an abysmal 7-29 road
mark. Dallas is 3-0 against Houston this season. One of the top contenders for
MVP this season, Dončić is currently tied with Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae
Young (who he was traded for during the 2018 NBA Draft) for third in the NBA in
scoring this season at 27.9 points per game. The 2018-2019 Rookie of the Year is
also tied with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland for fifth in the league
at 8.6 assists per contest and trails only Nikola Jokic, Dejounte Murray,
Russell Westbrook and James Harden for most triple-doubles this season with
nine.

WHO GAINED, LOST THE MOST FANTASY VALUE AT THE TRADE DEADLINE?

It’s natural to start mixing imaginary lineup permutations in your head after
trade deadline day. That’s part of the fun, right? Which players get new
opportunities on better teams? Which youngsters suddenly have more room to climb
their depth charts? We don’t just ask these questions because we’re fans of real
teams. We do so because we’re concerned about our fantasy teams. The real-life
trade deadline is always tricky to navigate in hockey pools, especially when it
comes so late in the season, after the fantasy trade deadline in most standard
leagues. Your stalwart netminder might suddenly become a backup. Your frontline
scorer might end up demoted to the second line and second-unit power-play work
on his new team. Which players gained or lost noteworthy amounts of fantasy
value over the past week leading up to the NHL trade deadline? In this
introductory edition of fantasy hockey risers and fallers, I offer five names
for each category. Trade Deadline Risers Marc-Andre Fleury, G, Wild It’s worth
noting that, with a capable backup in Cam Talbot, Fleury might see a small
reduction in his workload compared to what it was in Chicago. His all-around
fantasy profile and potential for wins and high-end rate stats improve
dramatically, however. As a Blackhawk, Fleury sat in the middle of the pack in
expected goals against per 60 among 63 goaltenders with 500 or more minutes
played at 5-on-5 this season. Talbot and Kaapo Kahkonen, manning the Wild net,
had two of the lower xGA/60 marks in the league because they’ve had easy
workloads. Minnesota allows the second-fewest scoring chances and fifth-fewest
high-danger changes per 60 in the NHL. Only the Boston Bruins have a lower team
xGA/60. Fleury, then, shouldn’t see nearly as many tasty enemy scoring chances
with the Wild. Not every netminder responds well to being less busy, but he
flourished on stout defensive clubs across his four seasons in Vegas. Claude
Giroux, C/LW, Panthers In certain situations, when a star player joins a stacked
team, it hurts his fantasy value because he has to play lower down the lineup.
That is not the case for Giroux. His opening line rushes with the Panthers have
him playing the right wing on Florida’s top line with Carter Verhaeghe and
Aleksander Barkov. Giroux is also penciled in for the No.1 power-play unit. He’s
joining a Cats team averaging a staggering 4.06 goals per game, the most since
the 1995-96 Pittsburgh Penguins. Not only will Giroux augment the lineup with
his versatile skill set, but he’ll practically accumulate extra points just
standing out there with so many elite teammates. Worth noting: He’ll soon gain
RW eligibility in standard Yahoo leagues, making him usable at every forward
position. Mikko Koskinen, G, Oilers Sometimes trades that don’t happen are just
as important in fantasy as trades that do. The Edmonton Oilers opted not to
upgrade in net at the trade deadline. That decision was probably to some degree
dictated by the market, as Fleury only wanted to go to Minnesota and potential
difference makers like Braden Holtby ended up not available (and hurt). Koskinen
had taken control of the Edmonton net, going 11-1-2 with a .916 save percentage
across 15 appearances leading up to March 21, and he’s likely earned 1A starter
status going forward. Do I think Koskinen is Edmonton’s answer in net? No. He
tends to falter when his workload increases. He could regress at any moment, but
his fantasy value undeniably spiked after the trade deadline passed. He’s now a
No. 1 netminder or close to it on a team with playoff aspirations. By the same
logic, Laurent Brossoit also gets a boost after Vegas acquired no additional
goaltending support behind injured Robin Lehner. Rickard Rakell, LW/RW, Penguins
This one’s a no-brainer. In fact, stop reading and check your waiver wire before
continuing. Rakell is available in 76 percent of Yahoo leagues at the moment.
That low ownership number reflects a three-year career funk that preceded this
season in which he failed to top 18 goals after eclipsing 30 in 2016-17 and
2017-18. The slump was tied to a sudden drop in shooting percentages, which
might have reflected a drop in linemate quality. Rakell’s most common linemates
from 2018-19 through 2020-21 were an aging Ryan Getzlaf and two-way winger Jakob
Silfverberg. This season? Rakell’s most common linemate has been the dynamic
young center Trevor Zegras, a player better equipped to set up teammates in
prime scoring areas, and Rakell’s shooting percentage and scoring rates jumped
to their highest marks since 2017-18. My point: Rakell can flourish when he’s
playing with a talented center, and that’s a virtual guarantee to happen in
Pittsburgh, whether he’s with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin – almost certainly
the latter. It wouldn’t be remotely surprising to see Rakell embark on a
stretch-run scoring binge. That makes him the definition of a league-winner off
the waiver wire. Owen Tippett, RW, Flyers Tippett, drafted 10th overall by the
Panthers in 2017, has scored goals effectively at every stop of his career. He
was a goal-scorer in major junior, he’s made it look pretty easy in his past two
AHL stints and he has little left to accomplish at the minor-pro level. His NHL
parent club was just too stacked to give him sufficient opportunities this
season. That won’t be a problem on his new team. The Flyers will let him sink or
swim. In his first game after coming over in the Giroux trade, Tippett played
the point on Philly’s top power-play unit. Will he finally bust out at the NHL
level? Maybe, maybe not, but it doesn’t cost anything to find out. He’s
available in 98 percent of Yahoo leagues. Give him a one-week tryout if you need
a spark in the goals, shots and hits categories. Trade Deadline Fallers Brandon
Hagel, LW/RW, Lightning The Blake Coleman comparisons follow Hagel everywhere
now that the Lightning paid up to acquire him in a deal very similar to the
Coleman trade of 2020. Coleman was a crucial real-life addition and helped Tampa
win back-to-back Stanley Cups. In fantasy, however, his value took a hit after
the trade because he became a third-liner in a loaded lineup. In his final two
seasons as a Devil, Coleman topped 20 goals both times and averaged more than 17
minutes of ice time. In Tampa, he managed 14 goals in 64 regular-season games
while playing around 15 minutes a night. We could see a similar role change for
Hagel. He had 21 goals and played 17:38 per game in Chicago. He logged just
10:40 in his first game with the Lightning, toiling on their third line. He’s a
lovely real-life addition for Tampa, but the deal torpedoes his fantasy value.
The Florida Sams: Reinhart, C/RW, and Bennett, C/LW The Giroux trade crowds the
Panther depth chart. Because he can play every forward position, it’s tough to
forecast which prominent top-sixer will get bounced to the third line on any
given night. For starters, in the first line rushes, it’s been Reinhart taking
the hit, dropping to third-line right wing duty with Bennett holding strong as
the No. 2 center. The situation is one to watch closely, however, as the
Panthers and coach Andrew Brunette find the best fit for Giroux. Between him,
Barkov, Verhaeghe, Anthony Duclair, Jonathan Huberdeau, Bennett and Reinhart,
there are seven top-six forwards for six spots. Andrew Copp, C/LW/RW, Rangers
Copp became an important member of the Jets’ top six over the past two seasons,
during which he emerged from more of a checker role to averaging 21 goals and 55
points per 82 games. His most common linemates this season? Nikolaj Ehlers and
Mark Scheifele. He won’t be so lucky playing a handy depth role on his new team.
His first Rangers line rushes had him manning the third line with Filip Chytil
and Dryden Hunt. Copp is a tremendous addition for the Rangers but, from a
fantasy perspective, goes from playing higher in a mediocre team’s lineup to
playing lower in a better team’s lineup. Cam Talbot, G, Wild You probably don’t
need me to point this one out. Shutout Monday night aside, Talbot just lost the
1A role in Minnesota’s net. He’ll still likely play more than your average
backup, but backup is the word. His fantasy value is all but dead in season-long
leagues. In daily formats, he’ll still have a chance to help your rate stats
when he does start.

BROWNS WANT TO TRADE BAKER MAYFIELD 'AS SOON AS POSSIBLE,' DON'T NEED…

By most accounts throughout the midweek, neither the Cleveland Browns nor
would-be buyers were in any desperate hurry to figure out the playing future of
quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is owed $18.858 million in fully guaranteed
money for the last season of his contract at the same time the Browns have the
newly acquired Deshaun Watson atop their depth chart. That may no longer be the
case. Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported Wednesday
afternoon that "the Browns aren’t seeking a first-round pick" for the 2018 first
overall draft choice "but are actively trying to trade him as soon as possible."
Additionally, Cabot wrote that "the Browns have no plans to pay some of
Mayfield’s salary to facilitate a trade," which seems to be a response to
previous stories claiming an interested party such as the Seattle Seahawks would
want his current employer to "absorb a portion" of that money. Like others,
Cabot added Mayfield’s contract could be restructured to benefit all involved
and, essentially, get the Browns off the hook for what he's owed if the Seahawks
decide they want to complete a trade sooner rather than later. Other than that,
the song mostly remains the same regarding Mayfield’s immediate future. The
Carolina Panthers aren't trading for the 26-year-old at this time, and the
Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons all added
signal-callers earlier this week. The Falcons may be a team to watch, though, as
general manager Terry Fontenot admitted earlier in the day he plans to add at
least one more arm to his quarterback room through free agency, the upcoming
draft or a trade. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also been mentioned as a
possible landing spot for Mayfield but at a much cheaper price than what he's
owed and only if he's willing to sit and learn behind seven-time Super Bowl
champion Tom Brady. "The Browns would like to give him a chance for a fresh
start now," Cabot wrote of the Cleveland-Mayfield divorce. That doesn't seem any
more likely Wednesday night than it did during the morning hours unless
Cleveland releases its former starter without caring about any financial burden.
