In the wake of another crash, residents and some councillors are asking that the
railway crossing at Colborne Street in Chatham be looked at to see if safety

On Aug. 27, two people were rushed to hospital after a collision involving a
Canadian Pacific train and a vehicle travelling on the street between Princess
Street North and Prince Street North.



The driver and passenger were taken to hospital with injuries that weren’t
life-threatening, Chatham-Kent police said at the time.



In July, a female pedestrian died after being struck by a train in the same
area. In May, a cube van was also struck. The driver, a Chatham man, didn’t
suffer any serious injuries in the crash and was issued a ticket for disobeying
a rail crossing signal.



Given the number of incidents this year, Coun. Marjorie Crew believes the
crossing needs to be addressed.



“It’s an unusual one. It’s kind of on a huge angle,” she said. “I think that it
definitely needs a good look.”

In interviews with Postmedia, several residents said safety improvements should
be made, including crossing arms as an added layer of protection.



Although the latest crash wasn’t fatal, Crew said it just as easily could have
been.



She said officials must take a look at the environment around the crossing to
see if anything could potentially obstruct a motorist’s visibility, noting the
crashes occurred during the daytime.



“These unarmed railroad crossings, they’re all over the place,” she said. “We
need to have everything that can be done to make them safer done. … The traffic
in that area, maybe there’s an increase.”



Whenever there is a collision, it results in closures at railway crossings
stretching into downtown Chatham, with traffic often blocked for several hours
during the investigation.



CP police are the lead agency for the investigation in the latest crash.



Salem Woodrow, a CP spokesperson, said they are looking into the incident, but
said the “type of crossing protection at each grade crossing is determined based
on regulatory requirements.”



Coun. Amy Finn said she’s not sure of the specific vehicle count but estimates
it could be “200 to 300 in a day easily” at the Colborne Street crossing.



“I would agree a study would be nice to see the justification if they don’t
(warrant changes),” she said.



“But no matter the cost, one human life is worth more to a family.”
