WHY YOU SHOULD GET (OR KEEP) YOUR CARRY PERMIT WHAT CHANGED IN THE LAW The short answer is nothing. Yes, after June 13th you will not need a permit to carry a concealed firearm and the requirement to declare to an officer has been removed. However, you will need to answer truthfully if the officer asks is you are armed. The only other notable change to the law is that if you have a concealed carry permit, you can carry onto school property as long as you do not exit the vehicle. For instance, dropping kids off or picking them up. If you are permit-less, you are not permitted to carry onto school property at all. All other provisions in the current law remain the same. WHY YOU SHOULD GET OR KEEP YOUR CARRY PERMIT June 13th is the magic date when "Constitutional Carry" comes into effect. Why should you keep yours current or obtain one if you do not yet possess one? One reason is to simplify purchasing a firearm. Ohio Carry permit is NICS compliant so if you possess one, the FFL dealer does not need to run a background check (although that is the choice of the dealer). You will still need to fill out form 4473 which is the normal paperwork that must be completed with every firearms purchase. Another reason to keep your permit is travel. If you travel outside Ohio and plan on carrying your firearm (which you should), you will still need a permit. For example, Kentucky does not care if Ohio is constitutional carry and you will need a permit to carry your firearm. Perhaps the biggest reason to obtain your concealed carry permit is professional training that comes with the class. Invaluable gun safety along with discussion on Ohio law will make you confident in carrying your firearm. Concealed carry of a firearm is a big responsibility. Consistent and constant training and learning should be part of your plan to protect yourself and your family. A basic concealed carry class is the best place to start on the journey of training and responsible gun ownership.
