Presenting Peikko PhDs - meet Ondrej Keseli from Peikko Austria!

”Life during PhD studies was very rich and stimulating, from studying hard and
working in laboratory to attending conferences and having part-time jobs. I
definitely recommend advanced studies!”

is a PhD and a Project Engineer who has been working for Peikko Austria since
2018. He obtained a PhD from the Department of Concrete Structures and Bridges
at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia, the same year.
For the PhD, Ondrej studied the strengthening of flat slabs against punching
shear using post-installed shear reinforcement. “While at university, I gained
lots of experiences and met many interesting and smart people – with many of
whom I am still in touch.”, he says.

Ondrej wants to recommend advanced studies to anyone considering them since the
studies enable spending time going deep into the details and solutions of
complex subjects. The PhD years were hard work. He studied technical papers,
helped colleagues with their experiments and gained laboratory experience. “I
also attended conferences, worked as a teaching assistant and a lecturer and had
a part-time job in a design office in Bratislava”, Ondrej adds.

If he was to go back to school now, Ondrej would still choose structural
engineering as his subject. “Maybe I would focus more on the possibilities of IT
since it enables better and better design tools and the design of structures
with amazing shapes, dimensions and materials.”, he says, adding “However, even
with IT, the gravity remains the same.”

At the end of 2021, Peikko implemented a pilot project in which a load-bearing
structure of concrete elements was installed, dismantled, and reinstalled.

In a pilot frame, disassembly and reusability resulted in approximately 35% cost
savings and 50% lower emissions, regardless of whether the entire floor
structure was implemented with wet or dry joints.

Product of the month: WELDA® Anchor Plate for welded connections between
structures.

WELDA® Anchor Plates are CE marked all-rounders of transferring loads to
concrete from other structures via welded connections. When you need to transfer
loads to concrete from other structures with a welded connection, our CE marked
WELDA® Anchor Plate is your go-to solution. WELDA® Anchor Plate is a simple but
effective product that consists of a steel plate and headed studs that are
embedded in concrete. The surface of the plate remains uncovered and creates a

“Even when working with a very specific subject, never lose track of the big
picture. Keep in touch with the industry, build relations outside academia, and,
whenever possible, work in projects outside the university.”

is an R&D engineer for Peikko Group and Peikko Brazil, and a graduate of the
Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. In 2020 Aguiar completed his Ph.D.
studies on the ductility of composite dowel shear connectors. “The research
involved the study of localized failure modes in steel-concrete connections and
is therefore directly related to my current work with Peikko’s bolted columns
connections”, says Aguiar, who has been working with Peikko since 2021.

During his career, Aguiar has worked as a steel structural designer and as a
university professor and researcher. In addition, Aguiar has developed software
for his family’s business. “The knowledge I’ve gained from my studies and from
the projects I have worked in has brought me to Finland. It’s a long way from
Brazil, so it is safe to say studying has impacted my life greatly”, Aguiar
analyzes.

Should Aguiar go back to school one day, he would invest his time in enhancing
his coding skills. “Computers are taking over all the repetitive work. So, if I
was starting my studies today, I’d want to be the one coding the computers”, he
says, and continues, “However, code is not everything. Outside the world of bits
and bytes there’s the real world – the fun world – where things need to be
materialized. So, I think I would still go to engineering field, but more
focused in material science and modular construction”.
