HERE’S WHY YOU’RE SEEING MORE TEXANS PLACE ORANGE PEELS OUTSIDE THEIR DOORS

BEFORE YOU THROW THOSE ORANGE PEELS AWAY, YOU MAY WANT TO RECONSIDER.

It's funny that I ran across this helpful info right after I finished eating my
first orange in over a year. I'm not sure why exactly. Well, if I'm being
perfectly honest it's probably because I have had an unfortunate tendency to buy
a bag of oranges only to throw it away in a couple of weeks. The reason was,
that the contents inside had started to turn a gray-orange and fester.

But even when I do eat an orange that turned out to be sweet and not at all
mealy and bitter like some have been in the past, throwing away the thick,
citrusy-smelling peels just seemed a waste.

AFTER ALL, I'VE HEARD SINCE I WAS A KID THAT THERE WERE VARIOUS USES FOR ORANGE
PEELS AROUND OUR HOUSES AND TYLER, TEXAS-AREA GARDENS.

House Digest shared an article that gives some of the advice I'd heard from
family and friends for years. For example, did you know 'You can use orange
peels to make candied orange or create fragrant essential oil?'

I wish I could say I wish I could say I was the type of person who makes candied
orange, but I'm not--at least not yet. Given how many of us find citrusy oils
beautifully intoxicating, I have always thought it would be neat to make
essential oils. Maybe I'll try that.

I'D ALSO HEARD THAT WE CAN SCATTER ORANGE PEELS IN OUR PLANTS TO KEEP PESTS
AWAY, BUT I'D NEVER HEARD ABOUT THIS.

According to research done by 'Bioresource Technology confirm that extracts from
the peels of the Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) species of orange and the Citrus
aurantifolia (lime) species were effective repellents against mosquitoes and
other insects, including cockroaches and houseflies.'

To be clear, they used orange oil in their study. But according to Orkin, orange
peels may also be used. If you don't mind seeing orange peels scattered about
your porch areas, it may be worth a shot as we get closer to summer.

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Using old condiments, even some of the seemingly stable ones, is a really bad
idea. Sometimes, it can be dangerous.

Using old condiments, even some of the seemingly stable ones, is a really bad
idea. Sometimes, it can be dangerous.

Mayo. Well, this one doesn't come as a surprise to many of us.

An article by Delish shares that 'A safe rule of thumb is anything that contains
mayonnaise should be tossed at the time of its expiration, especially if the jar
has been opened, says dietitian Bess Berger, RDN, with the New Jersey-based
company Nutrition by Bess.'

13 Condiments You Should NEVER Eat After the Expiration Date

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Mayo-based dips. The same reasons that apply to mayo itself apply here. Examples
of mayo-based dips are remoulade or tartar sauces.

horseradish

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Horseradish. The whole point of horseradish is to add that spicy kick to your
food. Once the jar is open and is exposed to air, the flavor factor starts to
decline. Get a new one or otherwise, what's the point?

Sour Cream

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Sour Cream. This one spoils even more quickly than other dairy-based condiments.
The USDA says we can store this one up to three weeks in the fridge. However, if
you see a pool of water forming at the top, give yourself another day or two to
use it and then throw it out.

Bbq sauce

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

BBQ Sauce. I'm pretty sure we held on to one bottle of BBQ sauce for years. We
never did eat it--and that's probably a good thing. According to Delish, once
you've opened the bottle, you've got about 4 months or so before it starts to
potentially form mold.

Chutney

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Chutney. I don't use much chutney, so this one is more unfamiliar to me. You can
keep it unopened in the pantry for a year. However, once you've broken the seal,
move to the fridge and eat it within a month--two at most.

Ranch dressing and veggies

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Ranch. Ah, our beloved Ranch dressing. Since it's a dairy-based condiment, it is
definitely subject to spoiling and could cause illness. Use it before that
expiration date, for sure.

Bleu Cheese dressing.

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Bleu Cheese dressing. The same rules apply as do to all dairy-based products.
Eating this one past the expiration date can truly make someone ill.

Mustard

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Mustard. OK, this one may surprise a few people. But despite what some may
think, mustard isn't immortal. Although the foodborne illness risk isn't what it
might be with dairy products, mustard can become rancid. And nobody wants
'rancid' on their hot dog.

Ketchup

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Ketchup. So, what's the deal with ketchup? It's only good for up to 6 months
after you open it after which time it can become quite sour.

caesar dressing

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Caesar Dressing. Since it contains raw egg yolks, olive oil, and cheese, left
unattended beyond its expiration date, this dressing could present a salmonella
risk.

Thousand Island

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Thousand Island Dressing. This one has a mayo base which means if you use it
after the expiration date, it could lead to a foodborne illness.

soy sauce

Canva

13 CONDIMENTS YOU SHOULD NEVER EAT AFTER THE EXPIRATION DATE

Soy Sauce. Well, we've come full circle. This one may be the most surprising of
all. Yes, it does have a long shelf life, but can turn stale and flavorless
after you've opened it and not used it up within a month or so.

29 FOODS TEXANS SHOULD NEVER REFRIGERATE

Today it's easy to grab something we've just eaten or bought and throw it in the
fridge -- thinking nothing of it. But dod you know several produce items should
be left out?

Gallery Credit: Maleri McHam

Avocado

Canva

AVOCADO

Putting avocados in the fridge will keep them hard. If you pick up a hard
avocado at the store, be sure to leave it on the counter to ripen quicker.

Basil

Canva

BASIL

Contrary to what you may think, basil will actually brown and wilt faster in the
fridge than if you leave it in some water on the counter.

Cucumbers

Canva

CUCUMBERS

I always keep cucumbers in the fridge -- but according to Delish, they will get
a 'chilling injury' when stored in the fridge.

Onions

Canva

ONIONS

Don't store your uncut onions in there, they'll start getting soft from
moisture. After cutting, however, do place them in the fridge.

Garlic Bulb

Canva

GARLIC BULB

Garlic should be kept in a cool, dry place -- but the fridge is too cold. It'll
actually make them start growing green sprouts much faster.

Potatoes

Canva

POTATOES

Moisture in the fridge will cause potatoes to become gritty and sweet.

Tomatos

Canva

TOMATOS

You'll achieve the best flavor and juiciness if whole tomatoes are kept out of
the fridge.

Unripe Bananas

Canva

UNRIPE BANANAS

Bananas prefer a warmer climate to ripen, so the fridge isn't necessarily the
best location for them. Unless you prefer unripened bananas that is!

Unripe Melon

Canva

UNRIPE MELON

Whole melons should be kept out of the fridge and put in once sliced.

Olive Oil

Canva

OLIVE OIL

The flavor of olive oil can be altered if put in the fridge because. It is
likely to form crystals and solidify if left there.

Hot Sauce

Canva

HOT SAUCE

Viniger added to hot sauce keeps it shelf stable -- no need for the fridge.

Ketchup

Canva

KETCHUP

It is safe to keep ketchup out, putting it in the fridge will simply extend it
by about 6 months.

Soy Sauce

Canva

SOY SAUCE

Fermentation keeps soy sauce safe to be kept on the counter.

Honey

Canva

HONEY

If kept in an airtight container, honey won't go bad on you.

Butter

Canva

BUTTER

Butter straight from the fridge is really hard to work with. If you're using it,
it is safe to be kept on the counter for a couple of days.

Peanut Butter

Canva

PEANUT BUTTER

You've got a good bit of time to get through a jar of peanut butter before it
needs to be refrigerated. The exception is natural peanut butter with no
additives.

Nuts

Canva

NUTS

Nuts are fine on the counter. Although, if you prefer to keep them in the fridge
that's okay too.

Pastries

Canva

PASTRIES

The best storage for pastries is in a paper bag or some type of container at
room temperature.

Chocolate

Canva

CHOCOLATE

Chocolate will have the best flavor at room temperature and becomes dull, and
grainy in the fridge.

Coffee

Canva

COFFEE

Maintaining the flavor of coffee is done by storing it in an airtight container
at room temperature.

Apples

Canva

APPLES

Your apples are totally fine on the counter for about three weeks. Havn't eaten
them by then? Throw 'em in the fridge.

Aged Cheese

Canva

AGED CHEESE

No refrigeration is required for this cheese. Just keep it in a cool, dark
location.

Canned Fish

Canva

CANNED FISH

it's in the unrefrigerated section at the grocery store, it can stay that way in
your home.

Molasses

Canva

MOLASSES

This stuff is already thick -- imagine trying to use it after siting in the
fridge for a while.

Eggplant

Canva

EGGPLANT

This item loses flavor in the fridge, but unfortunately only lasts about a day
on the counter. Soooo, just use it quickly!

Nutella

Canva

NUTELLA

The fridge will make this sweet treat much less spreadable.

Unripe Stone Fruit

Canva

UNRIPE STONE FRUIT

If not ripe, leave these babies out on the counter to ripen up. Once at a
desirable stage, then put them in the fridge.

Fruit Pies

Canva

FRUIT PIES

You can leave these fruit-filled pies put for about two days. In my house, they
probably wouldn't last much past that.

Cookies

Canva

COOKIES

Keep your fresh baked cookies in an airtight container for a while -- the fridge
will crumble and alter the flavor.
