BEST UTM/FIREWALL FOR SMALL BUSINESS W/OUT SUBSCRIPTION

Posted by Rainsinger on Sep 30th, 2019 at 6:36 PM
Needs answer
Cyber Security General IT Security

Background:

Small business, 20-30 users, but growing and may double that count within 3
years. Also have off-site users that will need VPN access (only maybe 10-12
total though). I was leaning toward a TZ400 w/ Subscription, but management is
not wanting to (at least for now) pay for any subscriptions. I searched around
and it looks like most of the recommendations that would fit are a few years old
so I wasn't sure if there was anything newer.

What would everyone recommend in this situation?

Any info would be appreciated - though I'll continue trying to hound management
about using something with full service subscription. :)

Always great when management want the earth but are not willing to pay
   anything for it.

PfSense / ONPSense free, firewall,, proxy, OpenVPN / Open Radius - likely
perfect for your needs - subscriptions are available for support if you need
it, can be a virtual machine

Untangle also does a free model, but I believe some components are paid

Any UTM ( device that updates threat detection) has a subscription afaik.
Sure there are free versions such as pfsebse, untangle free , sonicwall
   without a license etc
But anything that needs ongoing updating afaik needs a license for those
   services

That seems correct AFAIK as well, but I'm thinking if I can at least get
something in place that I can add a sub to later (if possible) then I can
sell them on it after I *cough* show them why we need it.

I think you'll find that a lot of the devices built for business will require
a subscription to run correctly and with as many security features as
possible. I did a little poking around and found through GuardSite Opens a
new window(one of our authorized resellers), you can find the WatchGuard
Firebox T70 with 1-year of standard support for $1,113. The Standard Support
includes 24x7 support with software updates and patches, but it is not going
to have robust security options. For our more advanced security features such
as IPS, WebBlocker, spamBlocker, etc., you'd need to get the package with the
Basic Security Suite, which comes to $1,502. If you want to get the Standard
Support package now, you can always add additional features down the line.

The Firebox T70 Opens a new window has a recommended user count of 60, so you
should have room to grow. If you need more information about the devices or
have questions, feel free to reach out to me!

Since you're already looking at SonicWall, get some pricing with the Total
Secure model, you get 1yr subscription at a reduced price.

Without a subscription to activate their UTM features (web filtering, etc.),
none of the mainstream commercial offerings (SonicWall et al) are going to
provide much more than basic stateful firewall features.

Pfsense on the proverbial cast-off PC, or better, one of Netgate's appliance
like the SG-1100 Opens a new window or the SG-3100 Opens a new window are
probably what you are looking for.

Yeah, after reading up a bit on one of the other replies that's looking like
it might be our top option if I can't get management to just agree to a
   subscription (which I'm pushing hard).

Sonic-wall is the best choice as it comes with subscription for first year. A
subscription is absolutely needed period. Remind them.

The prudent man rule requires that senior executives take personal
responsibility for ensuring the due care that ordinary, prudent individuals
would exercise in the same situation. The rule originally applied to
financial matters, but the Federal Sentencing Guidelines applied them to
   information security matters in 1991
