There have been many merger-and-acquisition announcements this year, but few
seem to be closing, and that’s hurting investment banks.

Dealogic data released earlier this month show that global M&A announcements
stand at $1.7 trillion year to date, a 33% drop in volume in the first half from
a year earlier. The 2022 figures are even weaker, given megadeals such as
Microsoft’s (ticker: MSFT) planned $75 billion acquisition of Activision
Blizzard (ATVI), and Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk’s efforts to acquireTwitter
(TWTR) for $44...

U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed Monday for Memorial Day. A handful of
major companies report later this week, with the economic-data highlight being
jobs Friday.

HP and Salesforce.com will report on Tuesday, followed by Chewy, GameStop, and
Hewlett Packard Enterprise on Wednesday. CrowdStrike Holdings, Hormel Foods,
Lululemon Athletica, and Okta will be Thursday’s earnings highlights.
