A CLOSER LOOK

With Audi set to join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, we get a chance to see the new
race car at Audi UK’s HQ

Writer: Emma Barlow

The year 2026 feels closer than ever after the Audi Formula 1 race car went on
show at the company’s UK headquarters in Milton Keynes. The car looked awesome
in its red, black and grey livery, with Audi’s mission statement, ‘Future is an
attitude’, emblazoned along its side

Andrew Doyle, director of Audi UK, was on hand to present the car, with a little
help from a very special guest – Audi motorsport legend and director of Audi
Group Motorsport Co-ordination, Allan McNish.

Allan has been central to Audi’s motorsport success, driving Audi race cars to
Le Mans 24 Hours victory in both 2008 and 2013, and providing expert stewardship
of the team’s Formula E electric race programme. Allan was quizzed about
drivers, and who would be the best candidates to take the wheel for Audi, but he
kept his powder dry, answering only, ‘The fastest!’

The car is emblazoned with a red, black and grey livery, plus Audi’s mission
statement – ‘Future is an attitude’. Andrew Doyle, director of Audi UK, and
Allan McNish, director of Audi Group Motorsport Co-ordination, presented the new
car to Audi UK staff at a special event in Milton Keynes

Of course, it really won’t be long until 2026, when Audi Sport takes to the grid
for its inaugural race in the Formula 1 World Championship. Work on this
ambitious project continues apace at Audi Sport’s base, which is housed in the
Competence Center Motorsport in Neuburg an der Donau, close to Audi’s Ingolstadt
headquarters. As well as conducting engine tests, the Audi Sport team is already
assembling the additional personnel and technical infrastructure required to get
its F1 operation up and running.

Speaking back in August, when the news was announced, F1 president and CEO
Stefano Domenicali said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Audi, an iconic automotive
brand, pioneer and technological innovator, to Formula 1. This is a major moment
for our sport that highlights the huge strength we have as a global platform
that continues to grow. We are all looking forward to seeing the Audi logo on
the grid and hearing further details from them on their plans in due course.’

Seeing the car up close really brought it home for the Audi team too. As Andrew
Doyle said on the day, ‘Now we’re really raring to go racing!’ 

READY FOR WINTER

We take the Audi Q3 TFSI e to the snow-covered French Alps to test out its
hybrid powertrain and a host of winter accessories

Writer: John Silcox

Photographer: David Powell

Amid rising fuel and energy prices, powertrain efficiency is at the forefront of
most drivers’ minds. Luckily, the new Audi Q3 Black Edition 45 TFSI e (from
£44,785 OTR) is a paragon of virtue in this field, and thanks to a hybrid power
unit, it boasts 148.7mpg* combined fuel economy, as well as up to 28 miles of
electric-only range*.

So, if you’re using your car for a short commute, you can drive with zero
tailpipe emissions. But when it comes to a winter holiday, is the Q3 TFSI e’s
hybrid power unit adaptable enough to handle snow, ice and steep inclines?

The quick answer is yes – but that makes for a bit of a boring article. So
instead of sitting in my warm office in London, I currently find myself on one
of the highest roads in Europe, facing an incoming blizzard…

Spot the Audi – in Daytona grey, it’s hard to pick out the Q3 TFSI e against the
tarmac from a bird’s eye view The Audi Q3 TFSI e’s generous ride height offers
plenty of ground clearance, which helps avoid the possibility of getting stuck
in snow drifts

The last sign I passed informed me that only cars fitted with chains or snow
tyres should continue this way. The good news is that my Q3 TFSI e sports a
fresh set of cold weather tyres, which are giving me plenty of grip on the icy
tarmac. The bad news is the snow has started to come down much more thickly, and
it’s becoming increasingly hard to see where the road ends and the
verge/precipice begins…

At least I can’t complain about how eagerly the Audi is attacking each steep
incline. Its petrol-electric hybrid unit produces 245PS, delivered by a slick S
tronic gearbox that doesn’t miss a beat. And when the road goes the other way,
regenerative braking automatically comes into effect in Auto Hybrid mode,
charging the battery while slowing the vehicle down gradually, thereby reducing
the risk of losing traction under harsh braking.

The Audi Q3 TFSI e boasts an elegant interior with large digital displays, and
is finished with leather details and soft-touch materials

In the cabin, I am spared from thinking too much about the complicated work
constantly being done by the drive management system, which divides tasks
between the 1.4 TFSI engine and the electric motor intelligently and
efficiently. It’s constantly evaluating numerous data points, including the
route information from the navigation system and data about the nearby
surroundings from the vehicle sensors, to manage your drive.

The only indication the driver gets is the power meter in the 10.25-inch Virtual
Cockpit display that shows the system’s output, status of drive, recuperation,
state of charge and range. It makes for interesting viewing, and reveals how
often the (otherwise imperceptible) electric motor kicks in, contributing to the
seamless delivery of power in certain situations, such as under heavy load,
making up for the millisecond turbo lag, or even when pulling away from a stop.

My journey also reveals how spacious and comfortable the Q3 TFSI e is for driver
and passengers. Up front we are ensconced in cloth and leather S line Sport
seats, which offer a firm and supported driving position with prominent side
bolsters to improve lateral support. In the rear, the bench is divided into
three sections that recline at seven different angles. The luggage compartment
has a volume of 380 litres, which is increased to 1375 litres when the seats are
folded down.

If all this isn’t enough, Audi also offers a range of handy accessories,
including the brilliant black roof box on our car, which adds an extra 430
litres of storage capacity while also enhancing the adventurous look of this
compact SUV. Genuine Audi accessories enhance practicality while also
complementing the careful design of the vehicle. They either blend in perfectly,
like the universal traffic recorder, which uses front and rear detection to
decide when to film activity around the vehicle; or they make a geometric
statement, like the front and rear rubber floor mats, which save the carpets
from snowy boots.

Automatic LED headlights come as standard, and are very useful when going in and
out of alpine tunnels

Via a series of swooping tunnels, I am transported from valley to valley, and
the higher I climb, the better the weather gets. As the sun finally decides to
show its face, my thoughts turn to just how entertaining this vehicle is. Not
only does its hybrid set-up deliver enough power for more spirited driving but
the weight distribution is also cleverly arranged, with the bulk of the compact
13kWh battery located low down in front of the rear axle.

Using Audi drive select, I choose the dynamic handling profile and then shift
the gear selector into Sport mode. This means that if I floor the accelerator, I
can get the full 330Nm torque of the electric motor for up to ten seconds – so,
with clear tarmac ahead of me, I tentatively decide to give it a go. In relative
silence befitting the nature of the surroundings, the Q3 TFSI e eagerly charges
forward.

Only a few years ago, this type of pick-up was only available in a sports car,
but now, thanks to hybrid technology, it’s available throughout the range. So
when powertrain efficiency comes hand in hand with performance benefits like
this, there really is no better car in which to experience the glorious natural
architecture of the French Alps.

shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and
equivalent electric range figures with other vehicles tested to the same
technical procedures. Figures may not reflect real-life driving results. Figures
for plug-in hybrid vehicles were obtained using a combination of battery power
and fuel. Plug-in hybrid vehicles require mains electricity for charging. Data
correct as of 12 December 2022. For more information on WLTP, click here

THE CHRISTMAS FUTURE IS HERE

An iconic brand meets an iconic London landmark for a Christmas ad that reaches
out and grabs you

Writer: Emma Barlow

Audi has become the first automotive brand to make use of DeepScreen technology
on Piccadilly Lights – the largest advertising screen in Europe, overlooking
Piccadilly Circus.

This exciting ‘anamorphic’ technology means that Audi’s Christmas advertisement
appears to jump out of the screen and over the heads of shoppers and red buses
at one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

The ad, named ‘The Spirit of Christmas Future’, shows the Audi grandsphere
concept car in a beautiful showroom-style space. The car is then thrust out of
the screen on a platform and appears to spin around in mid-air.

DeepScreen uses a technique called ‘anamorphosis’, otherwise known as forced
perspective, which gives the illusion of a 3D animation on the flat Piccadilly
Lights screen.

The Audi grandsphere is now famed for featuring in Audi’s latest Christmas
television campaign as Santa’s ‘upgraded’ sleigh. The all-electric saloon
concept provides a glimpse of what the future could look like, with doors that
open to greet you – and, in full autonomous mode, it’ll even drive you home for
Christmas. 
