ABOUT THE A5 WESTERN TRANSPORT CORRIDOR (A5WTC)

Welcome to the new A5WTC website. It has been designed to improve accessibility
and user-experience while maintaining the wealth of data that the project has
generated since its inception in 2007. Improvements in document management
through the Scheme Library and the Interactive Map present the proposed scheme
and important documentation across key project milestones in a more user
friendly and concise manner. If you have any suggestions, comments or feedback
about how we can improve the website, or if you have specific requirements,
please get in touch with us.    

The A5WTC is a Northern Ireland (NI) Executive led scheme which will provide a
new 85-kilometre dual carriageway from south of Londonderry at New Buildings to
the border at Aughnacloy.


This is a flagship project of the NI Executive which will help to connect people
safely, supporting opportunities and creating sustainable living places.

The A5WTC is of strategic importance to the region helping improve
competitiveness and economic prosperity through increased connectivity and
accessibility across the region.

SCHEME OBJECTIVES

The Department's objectives for the scheme are to:


 * Improve road safety;
 * Improve the roads network in the west of the province and North/South links;
 * Reduce journey times and improve journey reliability along the A5 Western
   Transport Corridor;
 * Provide increased overtaking opportunities along the A5 Western Transport
   Corridor; and
 * Develop a scheme proposal in light of safety, economics, environment,
   accessibility and integration considerations.

Achieving these objectives would contribute to the higher level objectives of
balancing regional infrastructure, improving competitiveness and economic
prosperity through improving connectivity and accessibility across the region.
