MYPLATE: UNDERSTANDING THE DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS

An important goal of the U.S. government is to help guide adults and children to
be as healthy as possible. One way to do so has been to make dietary
recommendations as visual representations of nutrition guidelines. You may be
familiar with the “Food Pyramid” or “MyPyramid,” but the most recent diagram is
called “MyPlate.” The dietary recommendations are updated every 5 years to keep
up with current research and health data. The most recent update of the Dietary
Guidelines came out in 2020, and it uses an updated MyPlate visual model.

The 2020 MyPlate model, shown below, shows a plate containing the five food
groups (fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy) in a place setting[1].
It is designed to help you to visualize how much of your plate should be taken
up by a particular food group.

HOW DOES MYPLATE WORK?

The MyPlate image is a plate that is divided into four sections, with each
section representing how much of each food group you should eat. Vegetables make
up the largest section, followed by grains. Together, fruits and vegetables fill
half the plate while proteins and grains fill the other half.

It may surprise you that MyPlate does not include meat as one of the 5 food
groups. Instead, the category “protein” includes fish, shellfish, eggs, beans,
peas, nuts, seeds, and soy products, in addition to meat.

A small blue circle on the side of the plate represents dairy. The latest USDA
Guidelines include fortified soy alternatives in this category.

This simple model is designed to make it easy for consumers to see what an ideal
meal should look like, without too many restrictive details. For specific food
group amount recommendations, refer to the MyPlate website or the full Dietary
Guidelines.

Some critics of MyPlate say it shouldn’t include dairy, which they argue is
unnecessary for a healthy diet. Critics also say it is important to give
information about the size of the plate and the portions because different
people have very different ideas about how large a “portion” is.

HOW TO PLAN FAMILY MEALS USING MYPLATE

The nutrition information in MyPlate is based on a set of recommendations called
“Dietary Guidelines for Americans[2]. The guidelines provide detailed
instructions for planning healthy meals and snacks for all ages and life stages,
such as recommendations for women who are breastfeeding or for toddlers. These
guidelines are fairly long, but here some key points:

Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables. Try to choose whole or cut-up
fruits without added sugars, and vary your vegetables; try different types as
well as cooking them in different ways (raw, steamed, roasted, sauteed).
However, try to avoid fried vegetables. Try to choose a variety of colors when
picking out your vegetables.Move to low-fat or fat-free dairy options.
Lactose-free or fortified soy versions are also recommended.At least half of
your grains should be whole grains. Look on labels for the word “whole”– not
multigrain or seven-grain. Brown rice and whole-wheat pasta also count. Try to
stay away from grain-based desserts and snacks, such as baked goods.Vary your
protein. Try different types, such as seafood, eggs, beans, unsalted nuts, soy
products, lean meat, and poultry.If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation.
Limit your intake to 2 drinks or less a day for men and 1 drink a day or less
for women.Limit added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat.

OTHER GUIDELINES FOR HEALTHY EATING

The USDA Dietary Guidelines encourage Americans to use MyPlate as a tool to plan
healthy meals[2]. They also outline 4 guidelines to “make every bite count”:

Follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage. Your eating patterns —
what you eat most of the time– are important. Think of how you and members of
your family can shift to a healthier eating pattern. The Guidelines give
specific recommendations for all ages across the lifespan. The full set of
recommendations can be found here.Customize your choices. Eating healthy can
still be enjoyable! The new guidelines provide advice on how to include personal
preferences, cultural traditions, and varying budgets when choosing foods to
eat. Eat Nutrient Dense Foods. Nutrient-dense foods are full of vitamins and
minerals that promote health. They have little added sodium, sugar, or saturated
fats. Examples of nutrient-dense foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains,
eggs, seafood, beans and lentils, unsalted nuts and seeds, lean meat, and
poultry. Fresh, unprocessed foods have the most nutritional value. Limit Foods
and Drinks with Added Sugar, Sodium, Saturated Fats. It is recommended that at
least 85% of calories come from nutrient-dense foods while no more than 15% come
from other sources. Look for ways to make healthy swaps such as water instead of
soda or plain, low-fat yogurt instead of full-fat yogurt, or flavored yogurt
with added sugars. Many foods such as dried fruits, granola bars, fruit juices,
and condiments like ketchup or pasta sauces can often be full of hidden sugars
or salt. Take advantage of nutrition labels to help you choose food and drinks
that contain less sodium, fat, and added sugar.

Planning a healthy diet using the MyPlate approach is not difficult. According
to the icon, half of your plate should have fruits and vegetables, one-quarter
should have whole grains, and one-quarter should have . Dairy products should be
low-fat or non-fat. The ideal diet gives you the most nutrients within the
fewest calories. This means choosing nutrient-rich foods.

Fill half of your plate with red, orange, and dark green vegetables and fruits,
such as kale, bok choy, kalo (taro), tomatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, apples,
mango, papaya , guavas, blueberries, and strawberries in main and side dishes.
Vary your choices to get the benefit of as many different vegetables and fruits
as you can. You may choose to drink fruit juice as a replacement for eating
fruit. (As long as the juice is 100 percent fruit juice and only half your fruit
intake is replaced with juice, this is an acceptable exchange.) For snacks, eat
fruits, vegetables, or unsalted nuts.

Fill a quarter of your plate with whole grains such as 100 percent whole-grain
cereals, breads, crackers, rice, and pasta. Half of your daily grain intake
should be whole grains. Read the ingredients list on food labels carefully to
determine if a food is comprised of whole grains.

Select a variety of protein foods to improve nutrient intake and promote health
benefits. Each week, be sure to include a nice array of protein sources in your
diet, such as nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, poultry, soy, and seafood. The
recommended consumption amount for seafood for adults is two 4-ounce servings
per week. When choosing meat, select lean cuts. Be conscious to prepare meats
using little or no added saturated fat, such as butter.

If you enjoy drinking milk or eating milk products, such as cheese and yogurt,
choose low-fat or nonfat products. Low-fat and nonfat products contain the same
amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole-milk products, but with
much less fat and calories. Calcium, an important mineral for your body, is also
available in lactose-free and fortified soy beverage and rice beverage products.
You can also get calcium in vegetables and other fortified foods and beverages.

Oils are essential for your diet as they contain valuable essential fatty acids,
but the type you choose and the amount you consume is important. Be sure the oil
is plant-based rather than based on animal fat. You can also get oils from many
types of fish, as well as avocados, and unsalted nuts and seeds. Although oils
are essential for health they do contain about 120 calories per tablespoon. It
is vital to balance oil consumption with total caloric intake. The label
provides the information to help you make healthful decisions.

In short, substituting vegetables and fruits in place of foods high in added
sugars, saturated fats, and sodium is a good way to make a nutrient-poor diet
healthy again. Vegetables are full of nutrients and antioxidants that help
promote good health and reduce the risk for developing chronic diseases such as
stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types
of cancer. Starting with these small shifts in your diet as mentioned above will
boost your overall health profile.

DISCRETIONARY CALORIES

When following a balanced, healthful diet with many foods, you may consume
enough of your daily nutrients before you reach your daily limit. The remaining
calories are discretionary (to be used according to your best judgment). To find
out your discretionary calorie allowance, add up all the calories you consumed
to achieve the recommended nutrient intakes and then subtract this number from
your recommended daily caloric allowance. For example, someone who has a
recommended 2,000-calorie per day diet may eat enough nutrient-dense foods to
meet requirements after consuming only 1,814 calories. The remaining 186
calories are discretionary. See Table 12.5 “Sample Menu Plan Containing 2,000
Calories”. These calories may be obtained from eating an additional piece of
fruit, adding another teaspoon of olive oil on a salad or butter on a piece of
bread, adding sugar or honey to cereal, or consuming an alcoholic beverage[1].

The amount of increases with physical activity level and decreases with age. For
most physically active adults, the discretionary calorie allowance is, at most,
15 percent of the recommended caloric intake. By consuming nutrient-dense foods,
you afford yourself a discretionary calorie allowance.

WHAT IS MYPLATE? SHOULD THIS BE YOUR PLATE NOW?

The quest to improve the American diet has a new icon. In June 2011, First Lady
Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled the MyPlate icon.
MyPlate replaced the previous MyPyramid image as the tool to help Americans make
healthier food choices. The goal is to get people to think about building a
healthy plate at meal times.

In addition to the MyPlate icon, a web site http://www.ChooseMyPlate.gov is
available for more information on building a healthy plate and diet. The USDA
(U.S. Department of Agriculture) states that "as Americans are experiencing
epidemic rates of overweight and obesity, the online resources and tools can
empower people to make healthier food choices for themselves, their families,
and their children."

HOW DOES MYPLATE WORK?

The plate is divided into four unequal sections to represent different food
groups.

The main food groups are as follows:

Vegetables Proteins Grains Fruits Dairy

Vegetables make up the largest portion on the plate, which is 40%, followed by
grains, which is 30%. Fruits make up 10% of the plate, and proteins make up 20%.
Fruits and vegetables fill half the plate, whereas proteins and grains fill the
other half. Small amounts of dairy in a glass (milk) or cup (yogurt) is
incorporated in the diet.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MYPLATE?

The benefits of MyPlate include:

MyPlate is a simple and easy model representing what an ideal meal should look
like, without too many dietary restrictions.

One of the positive facts about MyPlate is that it does not necessitate meat to
be included.

Instead, “protein” is part of the plate, which includes fish, shellfish, eggs or
beans, peas, nuts, and seeds in addition to meat, making it easy for vegans or
vegetarians and those with other dietary restrictions to follow.

MyPlate recognizes the benefits of a plant-based diet; hence, it eliminates
“oils” or “fats” section included in the previous Food Pyramid.

MyPlate also incorporates dairy because it is believed to play an important role
in maintaining good health.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MYPLATE AND THE FOOD PYRAMID?

The importance of a balanced diet dates back to research done in the 1800s. The
original research started with data on protein, carbohydrates, ash, and "fuel"
value for common foods. In 1902, the man responsible for this research, W.O.
Atwater, stated that "the evils of overeating may not be felt at once, but
sooner or later they are sure to appear -- perhaps in an excessive amount of
fatty tissue, perhaps in general debility, perhaps in actual disease." To this
day, the guidelines emphasize the dangers of excess.

The first official food guide in USDA publications was published in 1916. In
this guide, foods were categorized into five food groups: milk and meat;
cereals; vegetables and fruits; fats and fat foods; and sugar and sugary foods.
Throughout the years, several other versions of the guidelines would emerge as
research pointed out the benefits and risks of specific kinds of foods and
beverages.

In 1992, the Food Guide Pyramid was released as the image for a healthful diet.
It emphasized foods from the five major food groups: grain group, vegetable
group, fruit group, meat group, and milk group. Fats, oils, and sweets were
represented at the very top of the pyramid. The message was that each group
provided some, but not all nutrients, and no one food group is more important
than the other.

The Food Pyramid also included a range of servings for each of the food groups.
The minimum range was listed for "almost everyone," and the maximum was based on
your calorie needs. The biggest problem with the Pyramid turned out to be the
servings listed under each food group. Many people are unaware of the difference
between a serving and a portion. A serving is a guideline or standard unit of
measurement. We need this measurement to help estimate how much someone
consumes. The portion is the actual number of servings that you consume. For
example, if you eat a sandwich with two pieces of bread you would have two
servings from the grain group. Each piece of bread is one serving, so two pieces
would be two servings. That means that your portion was two servings of grains.
People would mistakenly think that whatever amount they had at the meal was
equal to one serving. That could mean that you were allowed a minimum of six
sandwiches if bread was your only source of grains! Of course, this is not the
case and it would be extremely difficult to maintain your weight if you did that
with each of the food groups.

Another criticism of the Pyramid was the way that the foods were listed. Some
people saw the large grain group on the bottom and thought that it was more
important than fruits or vegetables. Others saw the top as the most important
and that would mean that fats, oils, and sweets were the most important part of
their diet. Finally, the Pyramid doesn't show that whole grains are ideal, you
want lowfat versions of meats and dairy, fresh fruits and veggies are ideal,
that you need water, or that physical activity is needed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:

To screen the hair colouring properties of hair colorants/ herbal hair colouring
formulations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The dried aqueous herbal extracts of Gudhal leaves (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis),
Jatamansi rhizome (Nardostachys jatamansi), Kuth roots (Saussurea lappa), Kattha
(Acacia catechu), Amla dried fruit (Embelica officinalis), were prepared. Coffee
powder (Coffea arabica) and Henna powder (Lowsonia inermis) were taken in the
form of powder (# 40). Fourteen herbal hair colorants were prepared from these
dried aqueous herbal extracts and powders. Activities of hair colorants were
observed on sheep wool fibers. On the basis of the above observation six hair
colorants were selected. These six formulations were taken for trials on human
beings.

OBSERVATION:

The formulation coded HD-3 gave maximum colouring effect on sheep wool fibers as
well as on human beings and percentage of acceptance among the volunteers were
in the following order: HD- 3 > HD- 4 > HD-1 > HD-13 > HD-14 > HD-11.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

The remarkable results were obtained from five herbal hair colorants, viz.,
HD-1, HD- 3, HD- 4, HD-13 and HD-14 on sheep wool fibers and human beings.
Formulation HD-3, having gudhal, jatamansi, kuth, kattha, amla, coffee and
henna, was the maximum accepted formulation and suggested that these herbs in
combination acts synergistically in hair colouring action. It also concluded
that jatamansi, present in different hair colorants, was responsible to provide
maximum blackening on hair

INTRODUCTION

The desire to look beautiful is human weakness and is as old as the origin of
human being itself. Today most of the human beings are very careful about their
beauty and hairs play an important role in this. Herbal drugs without any
adverse effects are used for healthy hair. About 70% of human beings above the
age of 50 years face balding and graying of hair. In some, these symptoms of age
arrive much earlier. Graying starts on the scalp at about 40 years first at the
temples, follows later by the beard and moustache and still later the chest. The
age at which hair of a person turns gray is largely decided by heredity. But
premature loss of pigment in adults may be caused by a variety of other factors,
including illness, certain drugs, wariness, even shock and it is irreversible.
However, if hair turns white in childhood, it can be a result of malfunction in
the body and medical advice is called for.[1,2]

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is prescribed as hair and beared colorant.[3]
Nardostachys jatamansi is used for blackening of hair.[4,5] In the beginning,
the growth of hair is sparse and its colour lighter. In about 1 or 2 years, the
growth of hair becomes thick and the colour darker. Natural herbal hair
colorants/formulations contain dried fine powder or dried aquous/organic solvent
extracts used to colour the hair.

Preparations used in the hair care are available in the form of creams, dyes,
pomades, powders, tonics, lotions, conditioners, wave set, hair sprays, rinsers
etc. The herbal drugs are used as hair colorants.[3,4,5,6] More than hundred
hair formulations are available in the Indian market. Few of them contain
between <5 herbal drugs where as most of the formulations contain more than five
herbal drugs.[7,8,9] In hair colorants, herbs can be used in the form of powder,
aqueous extract or their seed oil to impart shades of different colour varying
from reddish brown to blackish brown.[10,11,12]

This paper describes the development of a herbal hair colorants/formulations
from N. jatamansi, Saussurea lappa, H. rosa-sinensis, Lawsonia inermis, Acacia
catechu, Coffea arabica, Embelica officinalis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PLANT MATERIALS

The fresh H. rosa-sinensis leaves were collected from South Delhi, fresh
rhizomes of N. jatamansi were collected from the hilly area of Pauri Garhwal,
Uttaranchal, India. Kattha, dried Amla, dried roots of S. lappa were purchased
from Khari Baoli market, Delhi. The fresh leaves of henna leaves were collected
from a Farmhouse near Jaipur, Rajasthan, and coffee powder was purchased from
local market.

All the plants material were authenticated by Dr. M. P. Sharma, Reader and
Taxonomist, Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard
University), New Delhi. Voucher specimens are deposited in the Herbarium of
Phytochemical Research Laboratory, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard
University), New Delhi.

PREPARATION OF AQUEOUS HERBAL EXTRACTS

The air-dried, course pulverized herbal drugs (5 kg each) were extracted with
distilled water. The aqueous extracts so obtained were dried under vacuum to get
dark brown masses (residues obtained varies from 24% to 62% w/w).

PREPARATION OF HERBAL HAIR COLORANTS

Fourteen herbal hair colorants were prepared by mixing dried aqueous herbal
extracts and powdered herbs (passed through #40), in sufficient quantity of
distilled water to make uniform viscous paste. Sufficient quantities of
anti-oxidants and preservatives were also added.[13,14] All the formulated
herbal hair colorants were kept in airtight containers at 10°C. The quantities
(% w/w) of dried herbal extract used in these hair formulations are tabulated in
Table 1.

‘’Premature greying, referred to as ‘Akala Palitya’ in Ayurveda[2], is the
result of aggravation in Pitta dosha or Pitta-Vata doshas. It is categorized
under Kshudra Rogas,’’ says Dr. Zeel Gandhi, Chief Ayurvedic Doctor at Vedix.

The Bhrajaka pitta, a sub-type of Pitta, is attributed to melanocytes that
produce the melanin pigment [3], which gives your hair its unique colour.
Imbalance in Bhrajaka Pitta causes insufficient melanin production, which in
turn results in white hair.

Here are some of the common causes of premature hair greying:

1. NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES

As per a medical article named Greying of Hairs/ Canities (Sheeb), hair greying
can even start at the early age of 15 due to certain vitamin and mineral
deficiencies.

Dr. Zeel suggests that a balanced diet is key to healthy hair. "Ayurveda
recommends making your meals a proper balance of all the six tastes. Salt and
spices should be consumed in moderation," she says.

She further adds, "Foods like mustard, linseed, fish, mutton, lamb and curds are
rich in nutrients. But excess use can cause vitiation of Pitta. Ayurveda thus
advises moderation. Also, lack of adequate amounts of iron, calcium, vitamins
B12 and D3 in your diet can cause greyness in your hair strands." [4]

2. ENVIRONMENTAL & LIFESTYLE FACTORS

"When you put yourself in extreme conditions like excessive physical exercise or
overexertion (ativyayama), overexposure to sunlight (atiatapasevan), awakening
during nights at Pitta Kala (11.00 pm - 2.00 am, raatrijagarana), excessive
smoking (dhumasevan), intake of polluted air (dushitvayusevan) and fasting
(Upavasa), etc. an abnormal spike in your Pitta-Vata dosha levels occurs, which
results in Akala Palitya or premature greying," says Dr. Zeel.

3. PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS

Pitta governs certain psychological factors like grief (shoka), anger (Krodha),
mental stress (maansika shrama) and fear (bhaya) in your body. Conditions like
uncontrollable anger, stress, etc. can easily provoke Pitta dosha to aggravate,
resulting in premature greying.

Even scientific researches[5] suggest that both chronic and acute stress can
potentially induce Achromotrichia (absence or loss of pigmentation) in your
hair.

4. GENETICS

According to a research named Why Does Hair Turn Gray?, your genes are stated as
the primary cause for grey hair at an early age. However, early diagnosis and
treatment may prevent further progression of the condition.

5. HORMONES

Major hormonal changes in women during conditions like pregnancy and menopause
can cause premature greying.

Also, the derangement of all the three doshas cause disturbed thyroid glands,
which may result in conditions like Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism. The
changes in thyroid hormone levels reduce melanin production in the body and
thus, turn your hair grey.

6. CHEMICAL HAIR DYES

Usage of chemical hair dyes and products like shampoos may contribute to your
premature greying as they may contain harmful chemicals like Hydrogen Peroxide.
Your hair may undergo bleaching and turn white on excessive use of these
chemical products.

Canities [6] is an irreversible condition that can cause grey hair at an early
age. It is caused as a response to severe free radical damage to melanocytes

IntroductionGreying of hairs or Canities (Sheeb) is a hair disorder

severely affect the self-esteem of an individual. “Sheeb” is an Arabic word
which literally means old person or hoariness (ageing). “Sheeb” is not grey
colour hair at all nor pure white hair, but there are different shades of
greying from dirty white to silvery white. In this condition the person appears
to be old in young age as greying of hair is the most common sign of ageing
while healthy hair is a sign of general well-being and youth.

Unani physicians defined “Sheeb” as Greying of hairs before the age of fifty
years and considered it as disease. If greying of hairs start before the age of
twenty, it is called as premature greying of Hair (PGH). Irrespective of age,
Greying of hairs (Sheeb) has become a crucial problem in the present era. It can
start from the age of fifteen due to deficiencies of certain vitamins and
minerals in the body, stressful environmental conditions, life style, faulty
food habits, genetic factor etc.

To overcome the problem, many synthetic dyes are used by the community. But
these dyes are having chief disadvantage of producing hypersensitivity and
systemic toxicity in some individuals.

Now days in the whole world there is trend to return towards the use of herbal
products to adopt more natural way of life. Use of natural colorant can be
beneficial to combat the side effects. Every individual has his own likings for
colours and the nature manifest itself in a wide number of colours.

Herbal hair dyes, however, do not have disadvantages. Herbal hair dyes are
generally less expensive than artificial colours, contain safer ingredients and
if manufactured properly are as easy to use. The Unani system has enormous
literature on dyes (Hair colouring agent).

Unani Philosophy and Causes of premature greying of hairs (Sheeb)

According to Unani physicians under nourishment (Qillat-e- Taghzia) is a main
factor and that’s why they recommend highly nutritious especially proteins rich
diet for retention of hair pigment.

Unani scholars believe that, weakness of three faculties namely Nutritive
Faculty ( Qoowwat-e- Ghazia), Power of Homogenization (Qoowwat-e- Mushabiha) and
Faculty of Transformation (Qoowwat-e- Mugaiyyerah), leads to nutrients of diet
unable to become part of body. As these faculties altogether convert nutrients
to likeness of the cell and body.

Some Unani Physicians (Attiba) justify as the fact that two factors namely
“Zo’f-e- Quwwat-e- Hazima” (Weakness in power of Digestion) with “Qillat-e-
Hararat” (Lack of Heat) may cause haemo-concentration and as a result blood is
unable to reach to small capillaries of scalp and hair. In the lack of proper
nourishment hair gets grey.

Some Unani physicians also believe that excess of Phlegmatic fluids (Balghami
Rutoobat), the temperament of scalp and hair get altered and nourishment is
compromised.

According to some scholars, psychological stress (Infialaat-e- nafsaani) like
stress, worry, grief, sorrow is potential cause of premature greying of hair
(PGH).

Some scholars believe that excess intake of sour food items and general debility
(Zo’fe Umoomi)

Rabban Tabri mentions in his book that hair of anterior portion of the head is
affected first than posterior part just like the crops growing in less fertile
soil which are weaker than the crops growing in fertile soil.

According to Jalinoos (Galen), Cause of premature greying of hairs (PGH) is a
fungus. He said that anything living or non-living when gets effected by a
fungus, it turns white. He also adds that Soo-e- mizaj-e- barid (cold
temperament beyond normalcy) spoils the nourishment reaching the hairs and
provides a soil for fungal infections.

Hypersensivity (Zood-e- Hassasiyat) to some agents is also mentioned by some
Unani authors as causative factor of premature greying of hairs (PGH).

Beside these other causes are Congenital (khilqui), Vitiligo (bars), Alopecia
areata (Daa-us- Sa’alab and Daa-ul- Hayya).

A part from above mentioned facts, causes of generalized greying of hair are
Vitamin B12 deficiency, Megaloblastic anaemia, Nervous stress and strain and
affections like migraine, Endocrinal disorders e.g., hyperthyroidism,
hypopituitarism etc. Its other causes may be pernicious anaemia, auto immunity
or use of certain chemicals.

Principles of treatment

Elimination of Morbid Material (Istifragh-e- Mawaad-e- Faasida) from head
and body. Ayarijaat and Muqawwiyat are useful for this purpose.

If Mizaj-e- Ratab is the cause then suitable mujaffifat (dessicants) are used to
absorb the excessive secretions

Muqawwiyat-e- Aam (General body tonic) to nourish the body and hairs

Systematic cleansing (Tanqiya-e- Aam) with Honey water (Maa-ul- Asl)

contact your insurance company immediately and ask their advice before starting
to clean up if your property or belongings are damaged

items.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS AROUND FLOODING

Flooding can contain pollutants which can affect your health and well being.
There are also risks such as missing manhole covers on roads and pavements and
people falling into fast flowing water. Don't eat any food that was in flood
water.

If there was a flood in your home, you should:

wash your hands after contact with flood water, sewage or anything these have

applying a mild disinfectant

Disinfectants should remove all traces of bacteria within 24 to 48 hours.

electrician will need to check the safety of the system, and the safety of

If there was flooding to gardens, paved areas and other external areas:

you can clean and disinfect patios and driveways but keep off these areas for
three hours after disinfection

it is not usual to disinfect cultivated areas as this can kill plants, if you
do, use a very mild disinfectant

don't hose the garden as this will saturate the ground and prolong the life of
the bacteria

do not dig or rake the affected area as this will spread contamination further

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ACROSS BANGLADESH, INDIA AND NEPAL HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY
FLOODS CAUSED BY MONSOON RAINS. IN NEPAL, THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES HAVE BEEN FORCED
TO FLEE THEIR HOMES TO ESCAPE THE FLOODS THAT HAVE CLAIMED LIVES, DESTROYED
HOMES AND RUINED FOOD STOCKS. UNICEF IS WORKING WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND PARTNERS
TO GET HELP TO THOSE MOST IN NEED.

SAPTARI, Nepal, 21 August 2017 – As the floodwaters receded, Asha Devi Raya, 30,
came down from the roof of her house. She had spent the night up there along
with her 28-day-old baby daughter, four other children, and her in-laws.

Relentless rainfall across much of Nepal has resulted in monsoon flooding and
landslides. Twenty-seven of the country's 75 districts have been affected by the
floods, affecting 160,293 families and displacing 51,244 families throughout the
country. So far 123 lives have been lost, including 20 children.

For three days, Asha's family survived on handfuls of murai (puffed rice).
Worryingly, Asha's baby was showing signs of weakness and rashes had appeared on
her face.

"You have to make sure none of this filth gets to the baby," says Sunita Sulpe,
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Officer for UNICEF, referring to the sludge left
behind by the flood, as she hands a hygiene kit to Asha.

The kit was one of more than 600 that UNICEF distributed in the district as part
of its immediate response. Each kit contains two towels, soaps for washing and
bathing, a comb, nail clipper, sanitary pads, sets of toothbrushes and a
toothpaste, and a five metre rope that can be used as a clothesline.

Asha Devi Raya holds her 28-day-old baby daughter outside their flood-inundated
home.

As the floodwaters recede, it has deposited sludge and, with it, contamination
at everyone's doorstep. All across the flood-affected areas, the risk of disease
outbreak is high.

"You might get infected with typhoid, jaundice, eczema, diarrhea, worm
infection," says Ashok Jha, a UNICEF staff, explaining to locals in nearby Topa
village how they should use the hygiene kit properly to avoid falling ill.

Topa was submerged under more than one metre of floodwater from the Khaando
River for two days. Villagers spent Saturday and Sunday nights under makeshift
tarpaulin tents on the raised roadside.

"All night I was kept awake by my baby daughter who kept crying for us to go
home," says Sunita Devi Khang, 30, of Topa. "Now when I bring her home she keeps
saying 'water' and urges me to take her away."

The flood waters swept away a sack of rice and a sack of wheat flour from her
hut. Sunita's husband is in Kathmandu and they have not been able to make
contact because the phones are dead. The flood has also damaged power lines and
there has been no electricity for the last two days here.

A group of women have gathered around the relief team in Topa, some with their
adolescent daughters in tow. Jha urges them to share items where possible, "If
you don't need something from the kit for yourself, like the sanitary pads, give
it to your neighbours and friends who need it."

RESCUE AND RELIEF EFFORTS

While the weather has improved and the water is gradually receding, access to a
number of villages in rural areas remains a challenge as bridges and culverts
collapsed and roads are under water. Rescue and relief efforts involve boats and
helicopters to reach stranded people.

Food, water and shelter have been identified as the immediate needs of those
affected. UNICEF is responding in these districts providing hygiene kits, soaps,
Aqua tablets, water treatment and disinfectant powders, mugs, buckets,
tarpaulins, bed nets, blankets, child and adolescent kits.

approximately 4,250 flood affected people.
