LAURA KELLY’S VETO OF TAX BILL SENATE FALLS SHORT IN EFFORT TO FORCE FLOOR DEBATES ON MEDICAID, MEDICAL MARIJUANA The Kansas Senate on Friday morning fell short in an effort to force floor debates on Medicaid expansion and medical marijuana.(WIBW) By Phil Anderson Published: Apr. 26, 2024 at 6:11 AM HST|Updated: 2 hours ago Email This Link Share on Facebook Share on X (formerly Twitter) Share on Pinterest Share on LinkedIn TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas House of Representatives on Friday morning voted to override Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of a tax bill. The vote was 104-15. Following Friday’s bipartisan vote, a joint statement was issued by House Speaker Dan Hawkins, R-Wichita; Majority Leader Chris Croft, R-Overland Park; and Speaker Pro Tempore Blake Carpenter, R-Derby. “Kansans need tax relief and revenue estimates tell us it’s time to make that happen,” the statement read. “With this significant, bipartisan vote of 104 to 15 to override the Governor’s misguided veto, we’re closer than ever to delivering broad and sustainable property, income, Social Security, and food sales tax relief to all Kansans. “I want to thank our Democratic colleagues for working with us and Tax Chair Smith in an overwhelming bipartisan fashion. It’s truly remarkable what we can accomplish for the people of our state when we work together.” Rep. Adam Smith, R-Weskan, is chairman of the Kansas House taxation committee. Also on Friday at the Statehouse, the Kansas Senate fell short in an effort to force floor debates on Medicaid expansion and medical marijuana. • The vote was 18-17 on a motion that would have pulled the Medicaid expansion bill out of committee and onto the floor for debate. A total of at least 24 votes were needed to force the floor vote. • The Senate also fell short on a similar effort to force debate on a bill legalizing medical marijuana. That vote failed by a vote of 12 to 25. WIBW-TV’s Callie Holthaus is at the Statehouse and will have more on these developments later Friday. Copyright 2024 WIBW. All rights reserved.
