ABOUT ME

Stephanie Kellington (she/her) MA, MA, RCAT

I am a Registered Canadian Art Therapist (RCAT #210-R-16) with a Master's degree
in Developmental Psychology from Simon Fraser University and a Master's degree
in Art Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths College, University of London (UK).

I have extensive experience working with children, teenagers and adults in
community and public-sector settings, both in Canada and in the UK over the past
15+ years.

As well as holding registration status through the Canadian Art Therapy
Association (CATA), I am a member of the World Professional Association for
Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Western Canadian Association for Infant
Mental Health. I also participate in on-going education and supervision through
the western branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Association.

Along with my therapeutic practice, I am also committed to furthering research
and theory within the field of art therapy and have contributed to academic
literature on the use of art psychotherapy with children and adolescents.
Additionally, I currently serve on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Art
Therapy Association Journal.

THERAPY SERVICES

At the centre of my therapeutic approach is the valuing of each individual that
I work with. The reasons that bring people to therapy are as varied as their
personal life stories. I aim to be responsive and sensitive to each client's
needs and aims.

With the above, I provide individual services that dynamically address clients
needs across various age spans:

Children (7-11)
Youth (12-18)
Adult (18+)

Some of the issues I have experience and training in supporting people around
include:

Anxiety + stress management
Depression + mood disorders
2SLGBTQIA+ identity and gender exploration/affirmation
Trauma + PTSD
Life transitions + change
Personal growth
Family + relationship challenges
Emotion regulation
Grief + loss
Intimate partner violence, including 2SLGBTQIA+ relationships

My primary training as a Psychotherapist is largely guided by psychodynamic and
attachment theories, while also being complimented by other approaches.

I believe that no one approach fits all, and I draw from a range of modalities
to meet you where you are at. These modalities include:

Art Psychotherapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level 1)
Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Client Centered Counselling
Play Therapy

ART PSYCHOTHERAPY

Art psychotherapy is a form of therapy that uses art materials and art-making as
the primary mode of expression and communication for those conversations.
Psychotherapy involves conversations with a listener who is trained to help you
make sense of, and try to change, aspects of your life that feel difficult or
are causing you problems. Within this context, the art is not used as a
diagnostic tool, but rather as a medium to address emotional issues which may be
confusing or distressing.

Art psychotherapy is accessible and approachable. Many children and young people
have a natural facility with communication through the art-making process and
find creative expression a pleasurable and rewarding experience. Individuals do
not have to be "good at art" to benefit from art psychotherapy. Many clients I
have worked with in the past have found that expressing themselves in the
unfamiliar act of art-making, allowed them to explore and discover elements of
their interior worlds that may otherwise have been difficult to access. As well,
individuals who have more experience in the visual arts have found enormous
benefit from applying their talents in a therapeutic context.

PROCESS

In-Person & Virtual Counselling

As part of my commitment to centering your voice and needs in our work together,
I offer both in person and virtual appointments as per your preference.

I. Initial Consultation

Choosing the right therapist for you or your child is important and it should
feel that there is a good 'fit' with the person you choose to work with. As an
introduction, we begin with a free, initial 30 minute meeting that allows us to
think about what you would like from therapy and to answer any questions there
may be about how we might work together.

II. Moving Forward

In proceeding, we begin a process of exploring what brings you into therapy and
address your needs accordingly as they evolve. Together we will come up with a
way forward. We will agree on a day and time for your weekly sessions.

III. Conclusion

Endings in therapy work best when they are thought through together and play out
differently for each individual. Our objective is to allow the therapy to evolve
organically so that you can feel when the time to end is right. This is a time
when new insights have been gained with the development of expanded
perspectives.

Fees

Regular weekly therapy sessions are usually 50 minutes in length, at $140 per
session (charged at the time of the session; a minimum of 24 hours advance
notice of cancellation is required or the full fee will be applied).

I also reserve a limited number of sliding-scale sessions for clients with
economic need.

SUPERVISION

Supervision is an opportunity for art therapy professionals to reflect on both
your experience of the work as well as its impact on you as an individual. It is
a positive and generative experience in which we collaboratively reflect on your
practice as an art therapist.

As a Registered Canadian Art Therapist with the Canadian Art Therapy Association
I have completed Supervision Training for Art Therapists through the British
Association of Art Therapists.

Please contact me for more information regarding this service and fees.
