CARIBANA 2024: INFO & TICKETS

WHEN IS CARIBANA TORONTO?

The Caribana Toronto weekend in 2024 takes place beginning on Thursday August
1st to Monday August 5th, 2024. The festival/parade itself is on Saturday August
3rd, 2024.

WHY IS IT CALLED ‘TORONTO CARRIBEAN CARNIVAL’ NOW INSTEAD OF CARIBANA?

In 1967 a local Caribbean group called ‘Caribana’  createdm organized and ran
the ‘Caribana’ festival in Toronto.

The Caribana group ran the Festival for many years without public funding,
relying solely on volunteers and Carribeean people in Toronto. In later years
they applied for assisted public funding, which required government auditing of
the company. During an audit in 2004 accounting books were removed by the
Caribana group.Due to this deficiency the funding for Caribana was cut. To
regain the funding, Toronto determined the city’s Festival Manageement Comittee
(FMC) could run the festival in hand with the Caribana group to regain funding,
which occured in 2006.

However in 2007, without consulting the Caribana group, the Toronto FMC sold
coporate sponsorship of the festival to Scotiabank, and to avoid controversy
with the Caribana group, they renamed the festival ‘Toronto Carribean Carnival’,
which they now run. Hence this is why the official name is no longer ‘Caribana’.
However people in Toronto still call the festival Caribana, with many not ever
knowing the background, and hence in this article we continue to refer to the
festival as Caribana.

We ensure all of the events we feature are CARRIBEAN ORGANIZED AND RAN events,
to honour the essence of Caribana, and to avoid the gentrification and
corporatization of the current parade.

WHERE DOES CARIBANA TAKE PLACE IN TORONTO?

The main carnival parade happens downtown Toronto, at Exhibition Place &
Lakeshore Boulevard on Saturday August 3rd during the day. However, Caribana
parties start from Thursday August 1st, starting with the Soca Starter day
party, and the Soca Overdose club party. On Friday August 2nd, the Carnival Kick
Off Day party is the biggest Caribana Kick Off party setting the mood for the
weekend. The Infamous GLOW party is an all white event on Friday night where
everyone wears white, creating a glowing effect. This is one of the most well
known Caribana parties in the past decade. On Saturday after the Festival there
is the Ignite day party leading into the hottest Saturday night party, Carnival
Meltdown 2024. On Sunday, wine down, and enjoy Soca Sunday a day party, with the
final fete on Sunday, Last Lap.

As the summer season comes around in Toronto, Caribana 2024 emerges as one of
the cities biggest festivals with its vibrant colors, pulsating rhythms, and
cultural celebrations. Deeply rooted in the heart of Toronto’s multicultural
history, it promises a unique blend of Caribbean heritage with a Canadian charm.
Welcoming both locals and visitors alike, Caribana 2024 is not just a festival;
it’s a true celebration of life, diversity, and unity.

planning, especially regarding safety and getting around.

STAYING SAFE

 * Stay Hydrated: Toronto’s summer heat can be intense, so it’s crucial to stay
hydrated. Carry water and take advantage of hydration stations.
 * Keep Belongings Secure: With large crowds, it’s wise to keep your belongings
in a secure, close-fitting bag. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in
   densely packed areas.
 * First Aid and Assistance: Familiarize yourself with the locations of first
aid stations and seek assistance if needed. The festival is well-equipped
with medical staff and volunteers to ensure everyone’s safety.

TRANSPORTATION TIPS

 * Public Transit: Toronto’s public transit system is an efficient way to get to
the festival. Plan your route in advance and consider purchasing day passes
   for convenience.
 * Ride-Sharing and Taxis: Ride-sharing services and taxis are readily
available, but be prepared for high demand during peak festival times.
 * Parking: If you’re driving, be aware that parking near the festival can be
limited. Look for designated parking areas and consider parking further away
and using public transit or walking to reach the event.

tickets. Check the festival schedule and plan accordingly.

VIP EXPERIENCE

 * Benefits: VIP access typically offers added comforts like exclusive viewing
areas, private restrooms, and complimentary refreshments.
 * How to Obtain: VIP passes are usually limited and sell out quickly. Keep an
eye on the official Caribana website for release dates and pricing.
