Plus: 553,000 newly planted trees VIEW IN BROWSER SUBSCRIBE Drop dead gorgeous Oregon road trips 🚙 Love is in the air, but not just between sweethearts exchanging chocolates on Valentine’s Day. February 14 also happens to be Oregon’s birthday, and today, the beautiful state we live in turns 163 years old. We’re offering our affections by sharing ideas for road trips that show off its dazzling natural beauty. It may look enticing, but visitors are asked not to swim. | Photo by PDXtoday staff/@benmcbeephoto Little Crater Lake | 1 hour 38 minutes | 75 miles Most have probably heard of it’s much larger namesake — Oregon’s only national park — but Little Crater Lake is more of a hidden gem (or sapphire?), and only a 10-minute detour off of Highway 26, east of Mt. Hood. Getting there is doable as a day trip, or you can pitch a tent at the campground + hike a trail that links up with the PCT. Sunsets on Neskowin Beach are hard to beat. | Photo by PDXtoday staff/@benmcbeephoto Proposal Rock | 1 hour 55 minutes | 89 miles We’re not trying to drop hints … but there are not many places more romantic or scenic than the Oregon Coast’s aptly named Proposal Rock. Take a stroll down the beach to the Neskowin Ghost Forest, where petrified trees stick out of the sand like a finger waiting for a ring. With ocean cottages, a general store + restaurant, plus two golf courses, it’s an ideal place to nestle down for a couple’s retreat. Even Michelangelo couldn't paint this. | Photo by PDXtoday staff/@benmcbeephoto Painted Hills | 3 hours 58 minutes | 200 miles Witnessing firsthand the otherworldly formations located in the vast John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is the definition of a bucket list experience. Layers of bright red, ochre + black make the Painted Hills look like an outdoor art museum — that’s been in the making for 39 million years. There’s no water and it’s extremely isolated, so come prepared. Mitchell is the closest town with lodging, but staying in Bend is also not out of the question. Whatever the duration of your outing, be mindful of the season when traveling — in most cases, spring through fall is your best bet. Give Oregon some happy birthday love with the buttons below. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Lantern Viewing at Lan Su Chinese Garden 🏮 Photos by PDXtoday staff/@benmcbeephoto Lunar New Year celebrations are wrapping up, and over the weekend, Portland Lee’s Association Dragon & Lion Dance Team performed for sold-out crowds. If you missed out on the festivities, you’re in luck — the annual tradition will be back in 2023 for the Year of the Rabbit. 🐇 NEWS NOTES Weather * 48º | Rain likely | 76% chance of rain Sunrise + Sunset * Rise: 7:13 a.m. * Set: 5:36 p.m. Eat * I’ll eat you up, I love you so. If you are still looking for inspiration for tonight, Eater Portland shared some ideas on where to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the city. Among its picks are pop-up Zuckercreme, pisco bar Epif, and the charmingly nautical Normandie. 🍽️ (Eater Portland) Environment * More trees, please. A recent announcement from Oregon Parks Forever revealed that the statewide nonprofit has planted 553,000 trees in areas damaged by last year’s heat wave + wildfires, including Silver Falls State Park — located about an hour and fifteen minutes from Portland. 🌲 Traffic * According to the American Transportation Research Institute, three spots in the Portland area landed on the organization’s 100 Top Bottlenecks list, including the Rose Quarter interchange of Interstate 5 at I-84. The report also said, "Overall, congestion on Portland-area freeways has a daily cost of $1.2 million." 💰 (KOIN) Network * To combat a shortage of childcare providers, Oregon Childcare Alliance is running a pilot program in Multnomah and other counties to offer free business coaching, financial management software + a year of training. Applications are open, with space limited to 80 qualified professionals. (KOIN) Number * 54. That’s how many Portland Peloton employees, mostly field service technicians, are being laid off. The company, known for high-tech stationary bikes + treadmills, also announced it will close its warehouse in Northeast Portland, as part of a wide move to cut 2,800 jobs. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live) Sports * The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired Australian small forward Joe Ingles from the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade last week. Coach Chauncey Billups also added a 2022 second-round draft pick + Elijah Hughes, while creating additional financial flexibility for the roster. 🏀 (ESPN) * If there was any lingering hope that Damian Lillard would return to the court for Rip City this season, interim general manager Joe Cronin has put those speculations to rest. The six-time All-Star is still recovering from surgery that repaired core muscles to alleviate his chronic abdominal pain. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live) * Vamos Timbers. The MVP of 2020’s MLS is Back Tournament, Argentine midfielder Sebatián Blanco, has re-signed with the Portland Timbers as a Designated Player through the 2023 season. He said, “I’m hungry to win, and there’s nowhere I’d rather be than this club with my teammates.” 🪓 Outdoors * The Oregon Department of State Lands says that Clackamas County homeowners who erected a fence into the Willamette River must remove it by the end of February. The beds and banks of the waterway are all public access, which has led to questions over property rights. But in the last year, I’ve really been into Detroit-style pies — you know, where the sauce is on top of the cheese — like the ones made at Ex Novo Brewing. Which reminds me, I may need to pick up a six pack, too. Missed Friday’s newsletter? It’s not too late to plan a last-minute date night in Portland.
