It’s Moving Day at the 78th U.S. Women’s Open, and for those looking to make an
early jump up the leader board, the chance to do so will come early in Round 3
at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Holes 2, 4, 6 and 7 are playing the easiest this
Saturday. In fact, all three are playing under par among the early groups. The
par-5 second has been shortened to 466 yards, and amateur Amari Avery and 2021
champion Yuka Saso – grouped together for Round 3 – both made eagles. No. 2 is
the easiest on the course at 4.42, followed by the 305-yard fourth (3.81), the
505-yard, par-5 sixth (4.82) and 99-yard, par-3 seventh (2.85).

Tardy’s Qualifying Procrastination Leads to Unusual Route to Pebble

Bailey Tardy, like a lot of top golfers, hates the idea of qualifying. Who wants
to endure a 36-hole day of golf with only a handful of available spots? It’s why
the 2016 USA Curtis Cup competitor didn’t even file an entry for the U.S.
Women’s Open the past two seasons. Her last attempt at qualifying for the U.S.
Women’s Open came in 2019. But with the 2023 championship at Pebble Beach, Tardy
decided to file, albeit too late for some of her first choices to be available.
So, the Norcross, Ga., resident went to Minnesota on an off week from the LPGA
Tour, and after making bogey on her final hole, thought she was ticketed for
first-alternate status. Except 2016 U.S. Girls’ Junior runner-up Jennifer Chang
also had a hiccup on her 36th hole and the two needed four holes – the last one
in near-darkness – to settle the second and final spot. Now, Tardy is atop the
leader board at a championship she’s playing for the fourth time, her first
start as a professional. “I actually had a flight out that night,” said the
26-year-old. “I had showered, I had changed, I had packed my golf clubs, and I
was out. Get me home. I'm done. I'm tired.” Then, Jennifer Chang three-putted
that last hole, so I was like oh, my gosh, I've got to go hit golf balls. I've
been sitting down for an hour and a half. I threw golf clothes back on, found my
golf shoes, hit about 15 balls, and just went and played four more holes, which
felt like an eternity.”

Mina Harigae, the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open runner-up from Monterey, Calif., isn’t
the only individual with local knowledge taking part of this week’s historic
U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. Casey Boyns has been lugging bags around the
iconic venue for more than 40 years. Boyns, 67, the senior member of the caddie
yard, is part of yet another USGA Open competition at Pebble. Having caddied in
three previous U.S. Opens (he was a forecaddie in the 1972 championship), Boyns
landed the bag of professional Riuxin Liu, of the People’s Republic of China.
Nicknamed “The Legend,” Boyns also can play a little. He won a pair of
California Amateurs at Pebble Beach before many of this week’s contestants were
born (1989, 1993). He’s also competed in 18 USGA championships, including the
2010 U.S. Senior Open. One of eight local Pebble Beach caddies who got bags for
the championship, Boyns often gets requests from resort guests, and he’s caddied
for such luminaries at Michael Jordan, actors Michael Keaton and Tim Matheson,
and comedian George Lopez.

A pair of former USA Curtis Cup competitors were the first two players to
qualify for the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.
Ex-Duke University All-American Lindy Duncan (2012) and former University of
Arkansas standout Brooke Matthews (2021) shot 134 (10 under) and 133,
respectively at The Club at Mediterra in Naples, Fla., on May 9. This will be
Duncan’s sixth U.S. Women’s Open start and Matthews’ first. Not long after they
qualified, 14-year-old Angela Zhang, of Bellevue, Wash., survived a 4-for-2
playoff at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., to punch her ticket to
Pebble. Zhang then caught a flight back home to prepare for the U.S. Women’s
Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash., where she’s
partnering with fellow teen and 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur co-medalist Alice
Zhao, of Irvine, Calif.
