JET GROUTING SOLUTIONS

Jet grouting, a critical component of soil improvement, involves the on-site
blending of soil with injected cement grout to form stabilized soil columns.
This process enhances the soil’s structural integrity and decreases its
permeability, making it a superior engineered solution for foundation support
and groundwater control. Its applications are diverse, including underpinning
existing structures and establishing cutoff walls for excavation support.

The technique starts with the drilling of a small-diameter pipe (around 4
inches) to the required depth. High-pressure cement grout, typically around
6,000 psi, is then injected through this pipe. As the pipe is rotated and
withdrawn, a circular column of improved soil is formed. The diameter of these
columns can be adjusted, providing flexibility in the construction process.
These columns can either act as standalone supports or be interlinked to form a
barrier against the movement of soil and water.

Jet grouting’s efficiency shines in environments with underground utilities or
other obstructions. Its minimal drilling approach allows for easy navigation
around these challenges, creating wider soil columns in constrained spaces. This
capability positions jet grouting as an ideal solution for soil stabilization in
complex underground conditions. As one of the best jet grouting contractors,
Schnabel leverages this method to offer adaptable and effective solutions for a
variety of construction scenarios.

AN INDISPENSABLE PARTNER FOR CLIENTS WITH COMPLEX PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED
STATES.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN MINNEAPOLIS

Schnabel used jet grout columns as underpinning and excavation support for the
construction of an addition to the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. The jet grout columns eliminated the need for timber lagging and
prevented the loss of sand during the 21-foot-deep excavation.

J AVENUE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Schnabel installed 67 jet grout columns to support the expansion of the J Avenue
water treatment plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This project required an excavation
adjacent to an existing structure. The continuous wall of jet grout columns was
successful in retaining the soil and water behind the wall and no measurable
settlement of the tank structure occurred.

> The Minneapolis Children’s Hospital project was Schnabel’s first application
> of jet grouting to underpin an existing structure in lieu of traditional
> hand-dug underpinning pits. The project team was very pleased with the
> performance of the jet grout underpinning system.

Chuck Conlon, P.E., Children's Hospital of Minneapolis
