Brain Health

INSIDE YOUR ACL

By Neurosurgery, June 13, 2018

Strokes or brain attacks, are quite common, affecting an estimated 750,000
Americans each year. It’s the fifth leading cause of death and disability in the
country, so knowing the causes and treatment could save your life. Here are six
important stroke facts to consider.

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)

INSIDE YOUR ACL

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) Femur Femoral condyle Lateral Collateral
Ligament (LCL) Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

The PCL is the strongest ligament in your knee. It attaches the tibia (shin
bone) and the femur (thigh bone). Working with the anterior cruciate ligament,
this band of fibrous connective tissue stabilizes the knee from the front to
rear, and prevents the tibia from moving backwards too far.
The femur is the largest, longest and strongest bone in your body. It’s commonly
called the thigh bone.
The femur has two rounded knobs on the end where it comes in contact with the
tibia. These are called the femoral condyles.
The lateral collateral ligament – also called the fibular collateral ligament –
attaches the lateral side of the femur to the lateral side of the fibula. It
provides knee stability by controlling the sideways motion of your knee. The LCL
is not particularly injury prone.
The medial collateral ligament – also called the tibial collateral ligament –
attaches the medial side of the femur to the medial side of the tibia. It
provides knee stability by controlling the sideways motion of your knee. Because
the MCL is attached to both the knee capsule and the meniscus, it’s more prone
to injury.
