Precision Refractive Cataract Surgery

ReLEx® SMILE®, also known as SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction, is the most
recent advancement in the field of laser vision correction. It is minimally
invasive compared to earlier generations of laser vision correction, and
preserves the integrity of the cornea. This procedure is used to treat patients
with myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. ReLEx® SMILE® is a flapless,
painless procedure, with distinct advantages compared to PRK and LASIK.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. A wide range of myopia
(nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism can be corrected
by the LASIK procedure. It is a delicate surgical procedure where a flap is
created and cornea is reshaped to correct your prescription. The flap is then
put back into place and begins healing, which allows for a predictable healing
response. Your vision stabilizes rapidly and you can expect little or no
discomfort following LASIK. Most patients have driving vision within 24 hours of
treatment.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a refractive procedure performed to correct
myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. PRK is
often recommended for patients who have thin corneas, or when it is deemed the
safest vision correction option. Rather than creating a flap on the corneal
surface (as in LASIK), the outermost layer of corneal tissue is removed so the
cornea can be reshaped to correct vision.

An Intraocular Collamer Lens (ICL) is an implantable contact lens made of a soft
biocompatible material, similar to a soft contact lens. Unlike a contact lens,
an ICL is permanently positioned inside your eye just behind the iris and in
front of the natural lens. In this position, the ICL remains invisible and
corrects your vision without causing the optical aberrations occurring from
laser treatments to the cornea. An ICL can be a life changing procedure for
patients with higher degrees of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness
(hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), known by some as a clear lens extraction (CLE),
is an intraocular procedure (inside the eye) identical to cataract surgery, but
with no cataract present. This surgical procedure is designed to reduce or
eliminate the need for glasses or contacts for people entering middle age.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) can be used to correct presbyopia (loss of
reading vision), myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or
astigmatism. Patients who undergo Refractive Lens Exchange won’t develop
cataracts in the future.

Precision Refractive Cataract Surgery combines cataract removal surgery with
refractive surgery to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contacts
post-operatively. Advanced diagnostic technology and premium intraocular lenses
(IOL) are used to give you your best possible vision.


Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery uses the Catalys® femtosecond laser and advanced
3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging to break up the cataract and
prepare it for extraction. The Catalys® is much gentler on the eye than a manual
extraction. Laser-Assisted Cataract surgery also combines advanced diagnostic
testing with premium IOL options. All cataract procedures done at Herzig Eye
Institute use the ORA System™ Technology during surgery to ensure the IOL is

PRK

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a type of refractive procedure performed to
correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism – just like LASIK vision
correction does. The LASIK surgeon use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to
allow light to properly focus on your retina which is the back of your eye. PRK
is often recommended for patients who have thin corneas. Rather than creating a
flap on the corneal surface (as in LASIK), your doctor removes the outermost
layer of corneal tissue so the reshaping process can be administered.


VISIAN ICL

The Visian ICL™ is an implantable lens made of a soft biocompatible material,
similar to that of a soft contact lens. Unlike a contact lens, the ICL is
permanently positioned inside your eye behind the iris (the colored part of your
eye) and in front of the natural lens. In this position, the ICL remains
invisible and corrects your vision without causing many of the optical
aberrations that occur from laser treatments to the cornea for higher degrees of
nearsightedness.

My whole experience was wonderful. I had sought a consultation from another
provider before, and everything about the Herzig experience was superior when I
entered the office - the cleanliness, the friendliness, and the thoroughness. I
was made to feel like I was listened to and they presented a better option than
what I was given at the first location.
The only bump in my pre-surgical procedures came from an outside clinic, but
everything in relation to Herzig was smooth. I completed my ICL surgery with Dr
Modabber mid-October, and it went seamlessly. Both in the pre-op waiting room,
and in the post-op. Dr Modabber made me feel very comfortable with all of my
appointments, and was amazing in surgery. Once my pupil size returned to normal
my vision was sooo drastically improved - it is miraculous from where I was. The
Herzig team gave me very clear instructions for every step of the process. I

I came to Herzig because my partner had gotten his eyes done here (SMILE) and
mentioned how painless and quick the recovery was. I had done consultations for
LASIK, PRK, SBK at previous places and just wasn’t confident in the results that
they were going to give me, as well as couldn’t take the time off required for
recovery.
Went for a consultation, and I was super happy to learn that I was a candidate
for SMILE, and jumped on the opportunity to do my eyes this month. The surgery:
The surgery itself lasts a few minutes. You’re awake the whole time, and can
see. The machine they use suctions to your eye, and then the lasers go to work.
The surgeon will then remove the layer by making a small incision. You don’t
feel anything really. Maybe a bit of pressure but besides that nothing. Not
painful, no smell. Immediately after: I had a hard time keeping my eyes open
after the surgery, so had my partner pick me up, and i went straight to sleep.
That helped. They give you T3s, but honestly you don’t really need them. When
the numbing drops wear off however it does feel like your eyes are burning
(hence keeping them closed). But this sensation goes away after a few hours.
Recovery: you need to take antibiotic and steroids drops multiple times a day
for the week after. It has been a week, and I can see excellently. My near
vision hasn’t recovered just yet, that will happen in a month, but I am back to
my regular activities including work. I sit at a computer all day, so that can
be taxing on the eyes, but I’ve been taking breaks and using my lubricating
drops to help. I’m super happy with the results so far, there has been no dry
eye, or feeling of sand, nothing like that! 100% recommend this surgery. It’s
the least invasive, and has the quickest recovery. Dr. Modabber did an excellent
job!
