Employees at WestRock in Salinas walked off the job on Thursday in protest of
recent management action. The work at WestRock, which creates "sustainable,
fiber-based packaging" for several ag companies in the Salinas Valley, came to a
halt when employees held a work stoppage. A spokesperson for the Teamsters Local
890 union told KSBW 8 that this was not a strike. Employees said that the shop
steward made a complaint to management on behalf of an employee who was denied
usage of his ergonomic chair on Wednesday. Later the same day, the shop steward
was escorted off the grounds. Employees said they were going to stop the work
until the shop steward was reinstated. WestRock sent the following statement
when reached for comment:"WestRock is aware of the situation in Salinas. In this
instance, an employee was placed on temporary suspension Nov. 1, 2023, pending
proper investigation, which prompted a work stoppage by plant employees on Nov.
2, 2023. Employees are being encouraged to return to work, and WestRock has
plans in place to ensure our customers are fully supported. WestRock is
communicating with employees to ensure they are aware of the proper process to
investigate claims."An estimated 110 employees refused to work on Thursday. But
video shared with KSBW shows the employees standing outside of the building,
with food and drinks delivered to keep them going. A note sent to the employees
by WestRock said that the shop steward was given a temporary suspension pending
an investigation and that employees who walked off the job would not be paid.
