Synchronous Ethernet – SyncE | When network timing is crucial

WHEN NETWORK TIMING IS CRUCIAL

In the past when the telephone networks started to go digital, the voice
sampling frequency was carried in the physical layer of the multiplexed digital
voice signal.

When ethernet based packet networks nowadays are used as carriers the need for a
physical timing signal to carry an accurate frequency becomes obvious.

You need Synchronous Ethernet – SyncE!

;

SYNCE IS A NETWORK TECHNIQUE

It uses the physical timing signal to carry an accurate frequency. By applying a
chain of SyncE-enabled Ethernet devices, it’s possible to distribute a frequency
from one side of a network to the other. This is more accurate than trying to
carry frequency at the packet level, because it is immune to packet delay
variation.

SYNCE IS COMMONLY USED TO PROVIDE FREQUENCY SYNCHRONISATION IN NETWORKS

It provides in particular an accurate reference frequency, thus enabling
transporting packets in a timely manner. This technique is crucial for time
critical applications such as mobile base stations and communication in
substation environment in electrical distribution.
