The aim of our application studies is to investigate products thoroughly for tolerability and, as appropriate, efficacy according to clinical dermatology criteria. As a rule, at least 20 test subjects use the product in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, for at least four weeks. If it is applied to the intended skin area (eye cream on the eyes, for instance), the product receives the 5-star seal (“clinically tested”) once the study has completed successfully. The 5-star seal applies to the Original Dermatest® premium sector. Studies with this distinction go beyond determining the potential for skin irritation in terms of their significance. Among other things, application over four weeks can usually rule out sensitisation potential. Complex time planning and test subjects who are specially selected for the requirements of particular tests are just as much part of the standard as the measurement of various physiological skin parameters. The efficacy, safety in use and tolerability of a product are investigated and monitored for longer. Tests are conducted on the intended site of application: eye cream, for example, is investigated directly on the eyes and eyelids. Features of a 5-star seal of approval: * Studies conducted under dermatological control * A representative number of test subjects with specific requirements (skin type, age, etc.) * Tests lasting at least 4 weeks * Application to intended areas of the skin (face cream on the face, foot cream on the feet, etc.) In order to guarantee maximum quality, we like to go beyond standard requirements. Additional features might include: * Measurement of physiological skin parameters * Questionnaires for evaluating subjective experience or product features * Other professionals might get involved (paediatrician, ophthalmologist, gynaecologist, dentist, etc.) * Final patch test to rule out any allergies which might have developed during the testing period Under this test structure, there is the maximum possible confidence that prospective buyers and users of the product tested will not experience any intolerance reactions. Dermatest® awards the 5-star seal for tests carried out according to these standards, with no reactions on the part of the test subjects – which is highlighted by the statement “clinically tested”. Repeat patch testing – for total recognition under the 5-star guarantee seal of approval, the relevant date it was awarded appears in the seal motif and the website is quoted for further information on the test design. YOUR ROUTE TO THE SEAL OF APPROVAL IN 4 STEPS You send us your enquiry.We would be delighted to tell you all about our four categories for the seal of approval, and plan the required testing together as well as define the study criteria. We work out the most suitable study design for your product in-house, based around your preferences and ideas and our requirements. You decide on one of the available studies and send the requisite sample quantities and information to go with it. We can then start immediately with the internal risk analysis, specific preparations for the study, and recruiting the test subjects! We carry out the jointly agreed study - perhaps a patch test for our Original Dermatest® seal or application test for using the Dermatest® 5-star seal - at one of our test sites. As always, our primary focus remains checking skin tolerability. Provided your product passes our review stage successfully once the study is complete, we then send you the study report and authorisation to use the appropriate Dermatest® seal. The seals come free of charge provided your product has successfully passed the relevant testing. How long is the seal valid for? There is no time limit set for using the seal. However, if anything changes in the composition or formulation of the products, a new test must be arranged. Under EU legislation, the date the testing was carried out must appear on the product packaging, which is why the month and year of testing are included as part of the seal. Can the colour or design of the seal be changed to suit our graphic design? This is possible subject to strict limits.
