DIRECTOR (BUSINESS)

A director is a person from a group of managers who leads or supervises a
particular area of a company, program, or project.Companies that use this term
often have many directors spread throughout different business functions or
roles (e.g. director of human resources). The director usually reports directly
to a vice president or to the CEO directly in order to let them know the
progress of the organization. Large organizations also sometimes have assistant
directors or deputy directors. Director commonly refers to the lowest level of
executive in an organization, but many large companies use the title of
associate director more frequently. Some companies also have regional directors
and area directors. Regional directors are present in companies that are
organized by location and have their departments under that. They are
responsible for the operations for their particular country. Though directors
are the first stage in the executive team, area directors are seen as higher up,
based on their area of control.

EXPRESS (WEAPONRY)

The term express was first applied to hunting rifles and ammunition beginning in
the middle 19th century, to indicate a rifle or ammunition capable of higher
than typical velocities. The early express cartridges used a heavy charge of
black powder to propel a lightweight, often hollow point bullet, at high
velocities to maximize point blank range. Later the express cartridges were
loaded with nitrocellulose based gunpowder, leading to the Nitro Express
cartridges, the first of which was the .450 Nitro Express.

The term express is still in use today, and is applied to rifles, ammunition,
and a type of iron sight. With the widespread adoption of small bore, high
velocity rifle cartridges, the meaning of express has shifted in modern usage,
and refers to high velocity, large bore rifles and ammunition, typically used
for hunting large or dangerous game at close range.

HISTORY

The name originates with a rifle built by James Purdey in 1856 (based on a
pattern established a year earlier by William Greener) and named the Express
Train, a marketing phrase intended to denote the considerable velocity of the
bullet it fired. It was not the first rifle or cartridge of this type but it was
Purdey's name express that stuck.

EKSPRESS

Ekspress (Russian: Экспресс meaning Express), is a series of geostationary
communications satellites owned by Russian State Company for Satellite
Communications. The first satellite of this kind was launched on October 13,
1994. The satellites are produced by the company JSC Information Satellite
Systems.

OVERVIEW

The Ekspress series of communication satellites (industry code 11F639) was
developed by the satellite company NPO PM as a replacement for the old Gorizont
series of comsats. The first satellite of the series, Ekspress 1, was launched
in 1994. It had a mass of 2.5 tons, 17 channels and an operational lifetime of
at 5–7 years.

Starting in the mid-1990s, NPO PM started to make significant effort to close
the technology gap between Russian and Western communication satellites.
Cooperation with the French company Alcatel (now Thales Alenia Space) was begun
in 1995. The first satellite of a new second series, Ekspress A-1, had 12
Alcatel-built transponders. It was lost in a rocket failure in 1999, but a
replacement, Ekspress A-2 was successfully launched in March, 2000.

they appreciate their staff's performance. It can even be as simple as a curry

this in our conversation with him during our 2nd Workplace Culture Masterclass.

Alan Alda doesn't want you to take "pro tips" from anyone—not even Alan Alda.
When it comes to his area of expertise—public speaking and empathetic
communication—there are no hacks or shortcuts; if you want to be a world-class
public speaker, you have to earn those stripes through the process of deeply
understanding what it is to talk, listen, and connect. Alda calls tips
intellectual abstractions; it's akin to the difference between information and
knowledge, between parroting a few words in French and speaking the actual
language. But, when pushed by yours truly at Big Think, Alda does give up the
goods (willingly—we promise no Alan Aldas were harmed in the making of this
video). His best tip to become a better communicator is what he calls the three
rules of three. Listen to his practical hints for becoming a communication pro
but, as he remarks, try to get there organically through the process. Alan
Alda's most recent book is If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My
Face?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALAN ALDA: Alan Alda has earned international recognition as an actor, writer
and director. In addition to The Aviator, for which he was nominated for an
Academy Award, Alda's films include Crimes and Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I
Love You, Flirting With Disaster, Manhattan Murder Mystery, And The Band Played
On, Same Time, Next Year and California Suite, as well as The Seduction of Joe
Tynan, which he wrote, and The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty, A New Life and
Betsy's Wedding, all of which he wrote and directed. Recently, his film
appearances have included Tower Heist, Wanderlust, and Steven Spielberg's Bridge
of Spies. He helped found the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at
Stony Brook University where he is a Visiting Professor, helping to develop
innovative programs that enable scientists to communicate more effectively with
the public. He originated The Flame Challenge, a yearly international
competition for scientists in which they compete to explain complex scientific
concepts so that 11-year-olds can understand them. Since 2008, he has worked
with physicist Brian Greene in presenting the annual World Science Festival in
New York City, attended since its inception by over a million people. He has won
numerous awards for communicating science from the National Academy of Sciences,
the American Chemical Society, and the National Science Board. Alda was born in
New York City, the son of the distinguished actor, Robert Alda. He began acting
in the theater at the age of 16 in summer stock in Barnesville, Pennsylvania.
During his junior year at Fordham University, he studied in Europe where he
performed on the stage in Rome and on television in Amsterdam with his father.
After college, he acted at the Cleveland Playhouse on a Ford Foundation grant.
On his return to New York, he was seen on Broadway, off-Broadway and on
television. He later acquired improvisational training with "Second City" in New
York and "Compass" at Hyannisport. That background in political and social
satire led to his work as a regular on television's "That Was the Week That
Was." His wife, Arlene, is the author of nineteen books, including her latest,
Just Kids from the Bronx. An award winning professional photographer, her work
has appeared in a number of magazines and books. They have three daughters and
eight grandchildren.c

TRANSCRIPT: Alan Alda: I don't really like tips; tips about communicating well,
tips about writing. What I would prefer is a process that transforms you so the
tips take place automatically. I mean for instance, very often a tip is given:
“When you're speaking to a crowd, vary the pace of your speech, vary the
volume.” Well, those are two good things, but if they happen mechanically it
gets to be kind of boring. Some people are encouraged when they're coached: “At
this point leave where you're standing and walk over there and take a pause.”
Well, maybe that makes sense in terms of how it's written; at the end of that
paragraph you want to make a space before the next paragraph, but it doesn't
necessarily make sense in terms of how you're talking and relating to the people
you're talking with. That—relating to them—should be the source of a pause, the
source of moving, because it comes out of the thought process I'm going through
and it comes out of the thought process I sense you're going through. Have you
understood that last... Read the full transcript at

Delivering results without compromising respect. DHL Express believes that
employees drive service quality which in turn delivers growth to propel the

curry puff. Mr Christopher Ong, Managing Director for DHL Express Singapore
shares this in our conversation with him during our 2nd Workplace Culture

Alan Alda doesn't want you to take "pro tips" from anyone—not even Alan Alda.
When it comes to his area of expertise—public speaking and empathetic
communication—there are no hacks or shortcuts; if you want to be a
world-class public speaker, you have to earn those stripes through the
process of deeply understanding what it is to talk, listen, and connect. Alda
calls tips intellectual abstractions; it's akin to the difference between
information and knowledge, between parroting a few words in French and
speaking the actual language. But, when pushed by yours truly at Big Think,
Alda does give up the goods (willingly—we promise no Alan Aldas were harmed
in the making of this video). His best tip to become a better communicator is
what he calls the three rules of three. Listen to his practical hints for
becoming a communication pro but, as he remarks, try to get there organically
through the process. Alan Alda's most recent book is If I Understood You,
Would I Have This Look on My Face?
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALAN ALDA: Alan Alda has earned international recognition as an actor, writer
and director. In addition to The Aviator, for which he was nominated for an
Academy Award, Alda's films include Crimes and Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I
Love You, Flirting With Disaster, Manhattan Murder Mystery, And The Band
Played On, Same Time, Next Year and California Suite, as well as The
Seduction of Joe Tynan, which he wrote, and The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty,
A New Life and Betsy's Wedding, all of which he wrote and directed. Recently,
his film appearances have included Tower Heist, Wanderlust, and Steven
Spielberg's Bridge of Spies. He helped found the Alan Alda Center for
Communicating Science at Stony Brook University where he is a Visiting
Professor, helping to develop innovative programs that enable scientists to
communicate more effectively with the public. He originated The Flame
Challenge, a yearly international competition for scientists in which they
compete to explain complex scientific concepts so that 11-year-olds can
understand them. Since 2008, he has worked with physicist Brian Greene in
presenting the annual World Science Festival in New York City, attended since
its inception by over a million people. He has won numerous awards for
communicating science from the National Academy of Sciences, the American
Chemical Society, and the National Science Board. Alda was born in New York
City, the son of the distinguished actor, Robert Alda. He began acting in the
theater at the age of 16 in summer stock in Barnesville, Pennsylvania. During
his junior year at Fordham University, he studied in Europe where he
performed on the stage in Rome and on television in Amsterdam with his
father. After college, he acted at the Cleveland Playhouse on a Ford
Foundation grant. On his return to New York, he was seen on Broadway,
off-Broadway and on television. He later acquired improvisational training
with "Second City" in New York and "Compass" at Hyannisport. That background
in political and social satire led to his work as a regular on television's
"That Was the Week That Was." His wife, Arlene, is the author of nineteen
books, including her latest, Just Kids from the Bronx. An award winning
professional photographer, her work has appeared in a number of magazines and
books. They have three daughters and eight grandchildren.c
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT: Alan Alda: I don't really like tips; tips about communicating
well, tips about writing. What I would prefer is a process that transforms
you so the tips take place automatically. I mean for instance, very often a
tip is given: “When you're speaking to a crowd, vary the pace of your speech,
vary the volume.” Well, those are two good things, but if they happen
mechanically it gets to be kind of boring. Some people are encouraged when
they're coached: “At this point leave where you're standing and walk over
there and take a pause.” Well, maybe that makes sense in terms of how it's
written; at the end of that paragraph you want to make a space before the
next paragraph, but it doesn't necessarily make sense in terms of how you're
talking and relating to the people you're talking with. That—relating to
them—should be the source of a pause, the source of moving, because it comes
out of the thought process I'm going through and it comes out of the thought
process I sense you're going through. Have you understood that last... Read

Alda calls tips intellectual abstractions; it's akin to the difference
between information and knowledge, between parroting a few words in
French and speaking the actual language. But, when pushed by yours truly at
Big Think, Alda does give up the goods (willingly—we promise no Alan Aldas
were harmed in the making of this video). His best tip to become a better
communicator is what he calls the three rules of three. Listen to his
practical hints for becoming a communication pro but, as he remarks,
try to get there organically through the process. Alan Alda's most recent
book is If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALAN ALDA: Alan Alda has earned international recognition as an actor,
writer and director. In addition to The Aviator, for which he was
nominated for an Academy Award, Alda's films include Crimes and
Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I Love You, Flirting With Disaster,
Manhattan Murder Mystery, And The Band Played On, Same Time, Next Year and
California Suite, as well as The Seduction of Joe Tynan, which he wrote,
and The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty, A New Life and Betsy's Wedding, all of
which he wrote and directed. Recently, his film appearances have
included Tower Heist, Wanderlust, and Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies.
He helped found the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony
Brook University where he is a Visiting Professor, helping to develop
innovative programs that enable scientists to communicate more
effectively with the public. He originated The Flame Challenge, a
yearly international competition for scientists in which they compete
to explain complex scientific concepts so that 11-year-olds can
understand them. Since 2008, he has worked with physicist Brian Greene in
presenting the annual World Science Festival in New York City, attended
since its inception by over a million people. He has won numerous awards
for communicating science from the National Academy of Sciences, the
American Chemical Society, and the National Science Board. Alda was
born in New York City, the son of the distinguished actor, Robert Alda. He
began acting in the theater at the age of 16 in summer stock in Barnesville,
Pennsylvania. During his junior year at Fordham University, he studied
in Europe where he performed on the stage in Rome and on television in
Amsterdam with his father. After college, he acted at the Cleveland
Playhouse on a Ford Foundation grant. On his return to New York, he was seen
on Broadway, off-Broadway and on television. He later acquired
improvisational training with "Second City" in New York and "Compass" at
Hyannisport. That background in political and social satire led to his
work as a regular on television's "That Was the Week That Was." His wife,
Arlene, is the author of nineteen books, including her latest, Just Kids
from the Bronx. An award winning professional photographer, her work has
appeared in a number of magazines and books. They have three daughters and

TRANSCRIPT: Alan Alda: I don't really like tips; tips about communicating
well, tips about writing. What I would prefer is a process that transforms
you so the tips take place automatically. I mean for instance, very often
a tip is given: “When you're speaking to a crowd, vary the pace of your speech,
vary the volume.” Well, those are two good things, but if they happen
mechanically it gets to be kind of boring. Some people are encouraged
when they're coached: “At this point leave where you're standing and walk over
there and take a pause.” Well, maybe that makes sense in terms of how it's
written; at the end of that paragraph you want to make a space before the
next paragraph, but it doesn't necessarily make sense in terms of how
you're talking and relating to the people you're talking with.
That—relating to them—should be the source of a pause, the source of moving,
because it comes out of the thought process I'm going through and it comes out
of the thought process I sense you're going through. Have you understood that
last... Read the full transcript at https:// bigthink. com/ videos/
