December 26, 2021, will mark 30 years since the Soviet Union was officially
dissolved. As such, the Institute of Modern Russia has launched a series of
interviews with experts to discuss the post-Soviet decades and identify key
issues of the Russian transition and their impact on Russia’s political system
and society today. In the fourth installment of the series, political scientist
Vladimir Gelman spoke about the reasons for the failure of democratic reforms in
Russia, the emergence of a “negative equilibrium,” the propaganda of a fictional
ideal of the “good” Soviet Union, and the country’s democratic potential.

In September, the Russian government continued its persecution of two anarchist
movement members: a Chelyabinsk court handed down prison sentences to Dmitry
Tsibukovsky and Anastasia Safonova for displaying a banner opposing the FSB. New
criminal cases on bogus charges of extremism were opened against opposition
leader Alexei Navalny and his associates. And human rights activist Valentina
Chupik, who had been living in Russia under refugee status, was expelled from
the country for criticizing corruption in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

European Studies (UCL SSEES) hosted the first academic book launch for Navalny:
Putin’s Nemesis, Russia’s Future? co-authored by Dr. Jan Matti Dollbaum, Morvan
Lallouet, and Dr. Ben Noble, and published by Hurst and Oxford University Press.
The three authors discussed the book with Professor Gulnaz Sharafutdinova of
King’s College London, delving into the authors’ endeavor to understand who
exactly Alexei Navalny is and how his activities and the Kremlin’s strategies
have shaped one another.

and neighboring countries, but also presents a serious challenge to the entire
Western world.

   release of IMR's new report titled “Russia under Putin: 20 Years of Battling
   over Civil Society.” The report is the second in the series of IMR's project
   dedicated to Russia under Vladimir Putin's 20-year long rule. Participants in
   the discussion included civil society researcher Yana Gorokhovskaia, Miriam
   Lanskoy (NED), Denis Volkov (Levada Center), and Edward Lucas (CEPA). IMR's
   Olga Khvostunova moderated.
