Trend Micro Maximum Security offers protection for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS,
and even ChromeOS devices, though you get a richer set of features on Windows
and Android.

OUR OBSERVATION

Best known for enterprise-grade endpoint security, Trend Micro Maximum Security
brings some of that malware detection prowess to home users, delivering great
performance. 

Trend Micro Maximum Security is a comfortable and streamlined antivirus suite
with a long history in both consumer and enterprise malware protection. It
sticks to the core mission of malware defence, but some of its features feel
like they haven't been updated in while.

When you install Trend Micro Maximum Security, you're invited to add Trend
Micro's password manager to your PC. Trend's Folder Shield ransomware protection
is automatically enabled for your Documents, Pictures and OneDrive folders.

You can add or remove folders from Folder Shield protection whenever you like
via the Trend client's Data settings. You'll be notified if any unauthorised
programs or processes try to make changes to these directories. The Data screen
also allows you to configure a password manager and encrypt or securely delete
files. The password manager is fine, but lacks features compared to the free
tier of Bitwarden.
Maximum Security's home screen isn't as info-packed as those of many rivals, but
it lets you know if anything needs attention and it's a lot nicer to look at,
thanks to customisable backgrounds, available in the settings menus.




Unfortunately, Trend is consistently among the worst offenders for false
positive detections of legitimate software and websites, clocking up 42
misidentifications. For nervous users, or those simply don't wish to spend their
time investigating the safety of a suspect file or domain, this seriously
impacts the usefulness of Trend as effective malware defence.
Trend Micro is decidedly twitchy about potential threats, racking up 42 false
positive identifications of benign websites and programs. This is a problem
because it can lead to either an impaired user experience or mistrust of the
security software's threat assessment.





INSTALL TREND MICRO WITH ADDITIONAL FEATURES

For a look at how each antivirus handles the very latest malware, I use a
collection of 100 malware-hosting URLs recently detected in the wild by security
experts at MRG-Effitas, a testing lab based in England. Trend Micro prevented
100% of the malware downloads, almost all of them by keeping the browser from
coming near the malware-hosting site. McAfee Total Protection, Norton, Sophos,
and ZoneAlarm also reached 100%. Phishing websites don’t attempt to plant
malware on your system. Rather, they masquerade as sensitive sites, hoping to
steal your login credentials. Trend Micro achieved 100% protection in a test
using very fresh phishing fraud samples. Bitdefender, F-Secure, McAfee, Norton,
and ZoneAlarm Extreme Security all managed 100% detection in their own phishing
protection tests.

This product offers three distinct layers of ransomware protection. Its Folder
Shield prevents suspicious programs from making any changes in the folders you
choose to protect. It monitors all processes for signs of ransomware-like
behavior. If ransomware manages to damage files before the behavioral system
wipes it out, it restores those files from encrypted storage. When we launched a
group of ransomware samples that were hand-tweaked to avoid simple
signature-based detection, Trend Micro caught them all based on their behavior,
tagging half as ransomware and the rest as suspicious. Other shared features
include: Pay Guard, a hardened browser for financial transactions; Mute Mode,
which suspends all security-related interruptions; a booster for Windows
Firewall that targets network-level attacks; Email Defender (formerly Fraud
Buster), which sends your email to Trend Micro for analysis and fraud detection;
and link markup to identify iffy or dangerous links search results and social
media. That impressive collection of features is what puts the "plus" in Trend
Micro Antivirus+ Security.
