💧 In 2024, 2.2 billion people are still living without access to safe water.
Indigenous Peoples disproportionally face growing challenges linked to water
scarcity, water pollution and large-scale water grabbing. ✊ On
#WorldWaterDay2024, IWGIA reaffirms the right to water as a fundamental
#humanright and #SustainableDevelopmentGoal6, which promises water and
sanitation for all by 2030. 🏭 The availability of fresh clean water in
Indigenous Peoples’ territories is preserved due to their sustainable practices.
Yet, extractive industries and privatization processes compounded with the
effects of #climatechange violate water and sanitation rights of Indigenous
Peoples. 👉 Learn more on the issue in this statement by the UN Special
Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Safe Water and Sanitation:

📢 On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, IWGIA
supports #IndigenousPeoples who daily face #racism and racial disparities. 🚨
Indigenous Peoples are at the forefront of intersectional discrimination. They
continue to experience #structuralracism in all parts of the world. In a society
historically marked by a discriminatory and racist social order, Indigenous
Peoples continue to lack recognition of their human rights and struggle against
a shrinking civic space. ✊ IWGIA advocates for the recognition of Indigenous
Peoples´ human rights and their effective, meaningful participation in all
aspects of society. 👉 For an overview of Indigenous Peoples´ fight against
#discrimination, read The Indigenous World 2023: https://bit.ly/3TGQ14Q

🔙 #TBT Indigenous Affairs 1-2/04: Indigenous Women 📄 This issue of Indigenous
Affairs brings together articles by Indigenous and non-indigenous authors that
describe and reflect on the situation of #Indigenous women, who are often doubly
discriminated against as Indigenous people and as women. And, if we include the
issue of poverty, Indigenous women are found to be triply discriminated against.
👉 Read more: https://bit.ly/3vQW5yg ⚖️ Many Indigenous societies have
traditionally egalitarian gender patterns in which men and women complement each
other in their work and within the family. Many of the articles stress the fact
that it is the influence of majority societies, through colonisation and
repression, that has restructured these egalitarian roles. Many Indigenous women
now find themselves confronted with unequal conditions imposed by the dominant
society and subsequently taken up by their own community. 📢 Despite the ongoing
discrimination of Indigenous women, some positive developments have also taken
place. Not only have Indigenous women started to speak out and raise awareness
of their situation, but some have also achieved important leadership positions
and have contributed to another view of women and #IndigenousPeoples. 👉 Read

🍃 On the International Day of Forests, IWGIA celebrates #IndigenousPeoples for
living in reciprocity with the natural world, in respect for all living beings
(human and non-human). 🌍 Globally, many of the remaining standing forests are
on Indigenous lands and contain rich biodiversity and carbon stored within.
Indigenous knowledge systems and cosmovisions enable the sustainable management
of nature´s sacred resources. 📢 Yet, the global #climatecrisis and
#biodiversitycollapse increasingly threaten Indigenous Peoples who live in
sensitive ecosystems such as tropical forests. 🏭 On every continent, forests
are burning and being logged. Extractive activities constitute a direct attack
on #biodiversity and Indigenous livelihoods. Colonialist policies and industries
fail to respect the right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) and give
rise to barren wasteland. ✊ Learn more on this issue in the Indigenous Kali’na

🌍 IWGIA joins Int'l Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self Determination &
Liberation on the International Day of Action for Rivers and supports
#IndigenousPeoples in their fight to reclaim their rivers and their rights to
#selfdetermination in a safe and sustainable environment. ☠️ Mega dams and
hydro-power projects violate the livelihoods and identity of Indigenous
communities, farmers and fisherfolks all around the world. Extractive industries
heavily pollute rivers and constitute a major threat to #biodiversity. Large
hydro-power infrastructures also provoke forced population displacement and
deadly disasters such as floods and landslides. 🎣 Learn more about Indigenous

📢Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
#FGM 👂Listen to the message from Judy Kipkenda, an #Indigenous woman and #Human
Rights defender from the Ogiek people in Kenya 🇰🇪. In her statement, she
addresses the discrimination against women who have not undergone circumcision,
or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As part of her work, Judy has heard stories
of women who had nowhere to report the discrimination and abuse they suffered,
and for those who did report their claims to the chief, they faced retaliation
for doing so. ❗ It is urgent to challenge and end harassment and violence,
discriminatory attitudes and stereotyping based on gender, ethnicity, and
Indigenous identity – trends that are entrenched obstacles to Indigenous women’s
equality. #EndFGM #IndigenousPeoples

75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. Even
though in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights there are no specific
references to #IndigenousPeoples, this does not diminish its crucial importance.
The Universal Declaration on Human Rights serves as the foundational cornerstone
of the entire UN human rights system, and consequently, it also forms the basis
for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Although
important advances have been made in the last decades for the respect of
Indigenous Peoples rights, there is still a long way to go. ❗ Of particular
concern in this year have been the recurrent eviction and continuous
militarization of Indigenous Peoples lands, state brutality, land grabbing
caused by militarized fortress conservation activities, and criminalization of
Indigenous rights defenders. ✊ IWGIA will continue to be present documenting the
violation of Indigenous Peoples rights and working as an ally in the struggle
for the recognition of their rights. #HumanRights #HumanRightsDay
