THE «RAVES»: MUSIC, EXCESSES AND NO PREVENTION

ILLEGAL PARTIES

TO THE ABSENCE OF AN EMERGENCY PROTOCOL OR HEALTH PERSONNEL, AMONG OTHER
SECURITY MEASURES, IS ADDED THE EXCESSES OF ALCOHOL AND DRUGS THAT MULTIPLY THE
RISKS TO HEALTH

The well-known illegal parties or «raves», historically associated with
electronic music and excesses of alcohol and drugs, are clandestine events in
which
health risks for attendees multiply even more so as there was no safety,
emergency or risk prevention protocol followed.

In one of these "raves", which has begun to be evicted in recent hours on the
shores of the Almendra reservoir, where the disappeared Zamorano town of
Argusino was located, a 32-year-old Swiss woman died last Monday afternoon
without her boyfriend, the rest of the participants or, ultimately, the
emergency personnel (Sacyl) could save her life.

The body of the victim, who suffered from previous heart disease, showed no
apparent signs of violence, although when the medical personnel arrived at the
remote place it was already too late.

Joaquín, Sara and Carlos (fictitious names) are assiduous users of this type of
parties that
they are usually held in enclaves that are difficult to access and far from
population centers, and that are not communicated to the authoritiesbut are
spread through social networks, where the organizers detail the development plan
of the event and facilitate the secret location, as explained in an interview
with Efe.

The
cabusive drug use, heat or other inclement weatherlike the one that also
unleashed the tragedy at the Medusa Festival in Cullera (Valencia), are a factor
of
added risk that can endanger the health and even the life of the attendees, a
scenario to which is added the absence of an emergency protocol or health
personnel, among other security measures.

WHO ORGANIZES THEM?

One of the last massive "raves" held in Spain before the one that took place in
the province of Zamora, lasted in an abandoned quarry in the Tabernas desert of
Almeria for four days, from New Year's Eve until January 4, when the Civil
Guard, after 96 hours of surveillance, was able to evict her.

Raúl Aguilera, spokesman for the Benemérita Command of Almería, in statements to
Efe, stresses that in
This type of illegal gathering prioritizes the “safety” of agents and
assistants. The latter may be under the influence of narcotic substances, which
is a serious danger if they are evicted by road.

Another of the priorities of the security forces is to identify the organizers,
in the plural, who are behind the preparation of events that at the level of
infrastructure - multiple stages, powerful sound equipment and bars with food
and drink sales - well they could be authorized festivals.

The decisive difference, according to this civil guard, is the
“absolute absence” of security, emergency or risk prevention protocolsleaving in
the hands of improvisation the attention of any type of incident that may occur,
such as the one that cost the life of the participant in the "rave" of Argusino.

When the loudspeakers are turned off and the stages are dismantled, the search
for the clandestine organizers begins, an investigation work "like that of drug
trafficking", which is carried out by the Information and Judicial Police
agents.
Violators face fines of up to €600,000.

WHEN IT "GETS OUT OF HAND"

Sara is a fan of electronic music and the rave scene, where she says there are
"much fewer" problems than in a commercial music club in the center of any city.
“There is a very good vibe,” she remarks.

But at these parties, which are attended by "all kinds of people" of different
nationalities, drug use, which can be purchased on the spot, and the
concentration of attendees can make someone "get out of hand " Y
become a threat for the rest of the people.

When this happens, Sara reports that it is usual to expel directly "and by
force" whoever is causing problems. Notifying the police or the emergency
services would mean bursting the “rave”.

A WHOLE BUSINESS

In the last illegal parties that Joaquín, Sara and Carlos have attended, there
were points of sale for alcohol and food, even made on the spot in vehicles or
private stalls. "They prepare everything from paella to meat with tomato," says
Sara.

They are, as they explain,
people or groups that “make a living” visiting the places where massive “raves”
are heldwhich they finance through the contribution of sound equipment or the
sale of food and drink.

The other side of the business of these parties is that of drug trafficking. The
most common are psychedelics (LSD), stimulants (speed or amphetamine) and
depressants (alcohol), in addition to one of the queen substances in these
environments, ketamine, says the specialist in psychoactive substances Antón
Gómez-Escolar.

As in the authorized festivals, many vendors go to the "raves" to make a
killing:
long days of compulsive bidding without any kind of police threat.
