ZOOM LEGAL SERVICES

They wouldn’t have done it if services like ours did not exist,” said Moore.
“The reality is that a lot of the folks who use our services would have gone
without representation…. While the companies have been very successful – Legal
Zoom is celebrating 16 years in the business, while Avvo nears 10 and Rocket
Lawyer reaches eight – their CEOs say that there is a lot of room to grow and
there is ample opportunity for others to gain a foothold in the market. “There’s
been a real decline in the last 40 years in solo practitioner income – I’m
talking about 1971 going forward, where the bulk of that decline happened in the
80’s and 90’s,” he said, noting that providers like Legal Zoom and Rocket Lawyer
represent less than 1 percent of the market, and are not the “boogey men” that
some attorneys make them out to be.Īll three companies-Avvo, Legal Zoom and
Rocket Lawyer-have focused their attention on serving the middle class and small
businesses, which the CEOs say have experienced the biggest drop in access to
justice in the last several decades. “The that many people are facing happened
well before the advent of the internet,” Britton said. This creates this big
shadow that billows out and keeps some of the most entrepreneurial lawyers from
pushing the practice forward.”įor those lawyers who are concerned about the new
technology-based outfits like the ones run by the panelists taking over the
legal profession, Britton said their worries are unfounded. “We have a lot of
lawyers out there who are frozen in their action because they don’t know whether
what they are doing is appropriate.”Ĭiting Suh’s Facebook example, Britton said:
“You have many lawyers who won’t use Facebook because they’re not quite sure
whether it comports with their bar association rules…. “Some ways that lawyers
are regulating themselves are really hampering their ability to be creative and
hampering their ability to create solutions.”īritton said that the impediment to
progress isn’t regulations, but the “shadow” of regulation. “What is the state
bar doing looking at Facebook changes and approving them? It didn’t make sense,”
Suh said. The participants had a long discussion about whether lawyers should
have their posts approved by the bar. Suh also recalled a bar association annual
meeting where there was a big debate about Facebook advertising. “Without the
ability to fund innovation, without the ability to attract multiple people of
diverse skills, it is very difficult to create innovative solutions.”
prohibitions against investments in law firms, a successful way of raising
capital in the U.K. Moore said that current regulations are not an impediment to
change, noting the success of his company and those of his fellow speakers, as
well as other “alternative” service providers.īut Suh disagreed, pointing out
U.S. The panelists debated whether lawyer regulations are also stifling
progress. If you listen, that should drive innovation.” “One thing that you
should draw on that blank slate is: Listen to the customer at all times.

Suh suggested that lawyers approach new ideas with an open mind, a “blank
slate,” emphasizing Moore’s advice. “So much of the law is based on precedent,
but so much of innovation is about thinking creatively, outside of it.” Legal
Zoom CEO John Suh agreed, noting that the way lawyers operate is often at odds
with innovation and creative thinking, the kind of qualities that can drive the
legal profession forward. “If all we do is focus on the issues…we miss the
opportunities.” But as a result, lawyers get mired in dissecting potential
problems, leading to inaction. “But the majority of don’t offer that, and that’s
not asking for much.”īritton said that many attorneys aren’t on the bandwagon
because of the way lawyers are trained to think. “If you listen to your
customers, they’ll say they want a flat fee, paid for by credit card, from a
solution provider they trust,” said Avvo CEO Mark Britton.

More than just demanding technology-based service delivery, today’s clients are
rejecting the billable hour and seeking more transparency. Increasingly “clients
want to consume legal services the same way they consume banking or Snapchat,”
said Rocket Lawyer CEO Charley Moore, pointing out that it’s always customers
that drive change – not service providers. Three pioneers of Internet-based
legal services came together at ABA TECHSHOW in March to discuss the changing
landscape of law practice and how lawyers can navigate the environment to
enhance their bottom line.Īccording to the CEOs of Avvo, LegalZoom and Rocket
Lawyer, success today means finding out what clients want and delivering on
those needs. Trade, Sports & Professional Associations

DIVINITY ORIGINAL SIN 2 BLACK CAT DISSAPER

From there on, you uncover the mysteries of the Voidwoken, divinity, and the
Source, in order to stop the Void from swallowing the whole world.

You play as one of the Fort Joy captives and have to band up with the others to
escape from the island before the Divine Magisters subject you all to a Fate
Worse than Death. These "Voidwoken" are drawn to manifestations of the Source,
so Bishop Alexander, Lucian's son and the new leader of his Divine Order, has
decreed that all Sourcerers be corralled on a remote island of Fort Joy. His
death has weakened the Seven Gods, however, who watch idly as monsters from the
Void now threaten to overrun Rivellon. Like the enhanced version of the first
Original Sin title, the Definitive Edition was given to owners of the original
release for free.Ī few decades have gone by since Divine Divinity, and Lucian
the Divine has passed away after winning the Great War against the Black Ring. A
Definitive Edition was released a year later on August 31, 2018, which fixed
numerous bugs and addressed criticisms of the original release, alongside a
release for Xbox One and Playstation 4 (with a Nintendo Switch version releasing
a year after that).

It released on September 14, 2017, almost exactly one year after the first act
of the game was released to Early Access by the developers. The game was
originally projected for release in December 2016, but having smashed through
every single Kickstarter stretch goal with over $2M in pledges, delays were
inevitable. Thanks to the success of the original, Larian had enough funds to
produce it on their own, but took to Kickstarter once more to attract additional
funding, build up a player community early, and to sign Chris Avellone on as a
stretch goal. Divinity: Original Sin II is the sequel to Divinity: Original Sin
by Larian Studios note although, in terms of the timeline, it actually follows
after Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, given how the original Original Sin
was set over a thousand years before all three.

He was married to cartoonist Aline Kominsky-Crumb, with whom he frequently
collaborated. In 1991, Crumb was inducted into the comic book industry's Will

more autobiographical. Much of his work appeared in a magazine he founded,
Weirdo (1981–1993), which was one of the most prominent publications of the
alternative comics era. In the mid-1970s, he contributed to the Arcade anthology
following the decline of the underground, he moved towards biographical and
autobiographical subjects while refining his drawing style, a heavily
crosshatched pen-and-ink style inspired by late 19th- and early 20th-century

scatological and pornographic comics. Natural, and the images from his Keep On

extremely popular, including countercultural icons Fritz the Cat and Mr. He was
additionally contributing to the East Village Other and many other publications,
including a variety of one-off and anthology comics.

His work displays a nostalgia for American folk culture of the late 19th and

PACIFIC 12 CONFERENCE

Parineh discussed the difficulty of tackling emission offsets as part of
Stanford’s ambitious new climate action plan, and the many stakeholders that
need to be involved in that process. The discussion turned to what the panelists
saw as significant sustainability challenges they need to address.

“We have 275 of these receptacles 26 of our buildings – that’s pretty darn
impressive,” he said. He also lauded the installation of shared waste stations
in common areas in place of individual trash bins.

In Athletics, Muir reflected on the success of the zero-waste game day
challenges, the installation of LED lighting at athletic venues, and the
reduction of water usage on Stanford’s golf course. “And eight years later, the
university has now invested over $3 million in transforming how we clean our
campus.” “It was just as effective if not more effective than traditional
cleaners on the market,” she said. She also cited the ways that Stanford is
using its own campus as a living laboratory to test solutions, such as one
former student’s idea for an ozone-based cleaning system to replace
chemical-based products. Parineh said a new partnership between the Office of
Sustainability and the Doerr School will include the new Sustainability Living
Laboratory Fellowship Program, through which fellows will work on complex
university-wide problems related to sustainability. And Koseff noted the 2008
construction of the Yang and Yamazaki Environment & Energy (Y2E2) building,
which was designed to conserve natural resources and has sustainable features
that are now common practice across campus. Livingston highlighted Stanford’s
investment in the Central Energy Facility and a large heat exchanger as among
the infrastructure improvements. They cited the Sustainable Energy System
Innovations (SESI) program, which has transformed the university’s energy system
from a fossil fuel-based system to 100% renewable, grid-sourced electricity. The
discussion opened with the panelists sharing the collaborative sustainability
accomplishments taking place across campus. In the morning, Moira Zbella,
Stanford’s Scope 3 Emissions program manager, moderated a panel discussion with
Stanford leaders: Bernard Muir, athletics director Kristin Parineh, associate
director of climate action planning in the Office of Sustainability Randy
Livingston, CFO and vice president for business affairs and Jeff Koseff,
professor of engineering and founding director of the Stanford Woods Institute.
Thursday’s program took place at Denning House and included discussions on
mitigating contamination, implementing sustainable practices at large sporting
events, and the work that student-athletes are doing to implement sustainability
measures.įrom left: Moira Zbella, Bernard Muir, Jeff Koseff, Kristin Parineh,
and Randy Livingston. In addition to the sustainability conference, Team Green
hosts the Pac-12 Zero Waste Competition and the Pac-12 Sustainability Working
Group. The Pac-12 Sustainability Conference is one of the key components of
Pac-12 Team Green, a platform that promotes sustainability among all 12 member
universities. “Every time we host an event, whether it is a practice, a contest,
a clinic, or a camp, we have the opportunity to demonstrate our universities’
commitment to sustainability,” he said. But he said that sports can also
generate considerable waste, emissions, and other impacts that harm the
environment, and he encouraged Pac-12 schools to collaborate on finding
solutions. With regard to athletics, he noted the ability of collegiate sports
to bring fans and campus communities together and provide a platform for
student-athletes to compete. He shared some of the sustainability work happening
across Stanford, including the recent opening of the Doerr School of
Sustainability. “Together, we have the opportunity to promote a culture and
mindset of sustainability, here in the Pac-12, and beyond,” Tessier-Lavigne said
at the event.

In the evening, conference goers attended a welcome reception at Stanford
Stadium where President Marc Tessier-Lavigne delivered the keynote address. The
conference kicked off Wednesday afternoon with tours of Stanford’s Central
Energy Facility, Recycling Center, and The Barn. Stanford President Marc

ESCAPE ROOM COMMAND CENTER

“One of the things we take pride in is that there’s some pretty interesting
electronical components and custom software-things that aren’t entry-level
rooms,” Andreozzi said. In addition to the “Special Ops” escape room, Outside
the Box currently offers two other rooms: “Outbreak,” where you have to stop a
deadly virus from spreading, and “Wanted,” a Wild West-themed game. Outside the
Box also puts time and investment into new, compelling rooms to keep people
coming back. The space even offers a meeting room so clients can hold a meeting
on site. So, we decided to basically triple-at least double-the size of the
location so we can cater to large, corporate groups.”Īnd they have, with
corporate groups quickly constituting a large portion of their business. “But
because there is so much competition, we knew we had to do something different.
“When we originally opened, we thought we’d be about the same size as some of
our other competitors,” he said. Additionally, it is more than double in size of
the competition, he said. Outside the Box’s owner, Benjamin Andreozzi, explained
that this sets his escape room apart from others in the area. Many of the steps
integrate technologies that make the experience relatable to an action film.
“I’ve always been trying to integrate games and education,” he said. He also
sends clues into rooms to nudge players when they seem stuck or go down a wrong
path. He tweaks steps to ensure the mission is challenging but not impossible. I
was a little more prepared for what was coming than the rest of the group, as I
had sat down to interview Kelly a few days before.īesides handling Outside the
Box’s day-to-day operations, Kelly pays close attention to how groups interact
with the games. We had to infiltrate the enemy’s command center and disrupt an
impending act of mass destruction. We were part of a covert operations team that
had been dropped behind enemy lines, he said. It was their first time, as
well.īefore entering the room, Outside the Box’s manager, Sean Michael Kelly,
gave us a rundown of the do’s and don’ts, as well as a briefing on our mission.
While waiting in the lobby, we met our two team members, Raul and Elaine Otano.
Our group, four friends, had reserved our spots on a whim. Once the puzzle is
solved, the locked door bursts open, allowing humanity’s saviors to return to
their far more mundane lives as accountants or state workers or whatever.
Outside the Box is one of a handful of “escape rooms” in central PA, which
feature fun, adrenaline-pumping games where small groups of people, locked in a
room, work together under intense time pressure to solve a perplexing
riddle-often with the fate of mankind at stake. These were the thoughts that
bombarded my mind in the final few minutes of my time in Outside the Box Escape
Room in downtown Harrisburg. If we could not decipher the final code that needed
to be entered into the laptop, the missile would fire, and we would all meet an
untimely, tragic end. As we rummaged through helmets, depicted codes and
pondered our surroundings for hidden clues-under furniture, in books, in
pictures, on maps-it occurred to me that we may not beat the ever-nearing
deadline. Without discussing it, the group had split up into pairs, each working
on a separate challenge and deep in discussion. I started to become acutely
aware of the rising stress levels of the people in the room-strangers and
friends. Pete, 1942 2nd Ave S, St.Escape the Ordinary: At Outside the Box Escape

ADOBE PODCAST EDITOR

In testing this, I recorded a conversation between my colleague Mat Smith and
myself. Second would be some proprietary tools - notably “Enhance Speech.” With
one click, this magic button basically transforms garbage audio recorded in the
worst of rooms into something that sounds more professional. First, unlike the
rival products mentioned above, Podcast has a singular focus on audio, so there
are no video editing, presentation or livestreaming tools you might not need.
Perhaps Adobe’s secret weapon here is two-fold. The result is an incredibly
frictionless way to get local audio, transcribed and ready to be edited in one
fell swoop.

With Podcast, your guests simply accept an invite, much like they would for a
Zoom meeting, and then you converse in real time while the local audio is
uploaded in the background. In the past you might have had to have a pre-brief
with a guest to figure out their audio setup, maybe guide them into recording it
locally with Audacity and then deal with transferring large audio files around
after the fact. One of the major benefits for online tools like Podcast or
similar services such as Riverside Fm and Zencastr is how easy it is to invite
guests. “I think we could use some really interesting technology to look at the
space between words and when you make deletions and just find a way to just do
it automatically.” Anderson said.

In the future, the system might leverage AI to make these sorts of edits for
you. So, for now at least, you might still have to make some minor edits after
you export from Podcast. But you might not quite get the smooth edit you would
if you did this manually in an audio editing app. Similarly, you can cut/paste
to move things around as you see fit. For the most part that’s fine, but if you
wanted to add or trim some silence, for example, you can’t do that here, you’ll
have to get creative.įor example, removing a sentence is as easy as highlighting
it in the transcription and smacking the delete key. In Adobe Podcast, you can
only highlight text and the finer details of the edit are taken care of by the
backend. In an audio editor, you can choose exactly where you want to trim a
segment of audio to. But it’s not without some trade offs.įor one, there’s a
certain amount of control you have to learn to relinquish. Not to mention, being
able to see what’s being said without endlessly playing it back to find the
right spot is also much easier on the ears, eyes and soul. Podcasts are about
what is being said, so it’s logical to work on the text first rather than the
raw audio. When you think about it as a storytelling tool, suddenly all the
things that are in traditional audio tools, like looking at the audio waveforms
and decibel levels, they're actually not relevant.” Sam Anderson, Adobe
Podcast’s Lead Designer told Engadget.Īpps like Descript have been doing it this
way for a while. “We don't think of Adobe Podcast as another audio tool. There
are even some extra tools for creating artwork (as seen above). Anything you
record through Adobe Podcast will be automatically transcribed and you simply
edit the text to make changes (which are then magically reflected in the audio).
And not just because you work top down, but for the most part, you really are
just editing a text document. Instead you’ll work on your podcasts like you
would a text document.

Unlike traditional audio editors, including Adobe’s own Audition, you won’t work
left to right or even really work with audio files at all. Anyone can apply for
access, but currently you’ll need to be based in the US. The result is Adobe
Podcast which is still in beta. But we kind of took a step back it was really
about just building services and a platform to make it really easy to create
spoken audio.’“ “That could have been creating a creative cloud voice assistant
or speaking to Photoshop. “The goal was to come up with a broader voice strategy
for Adobe,” Mark Webster, Director of Product told Engadget. The first thing
you’ll notice is how it doesn’t look like an audio editor at all. The main thing
to know is there’s no audio timeline here and no mixer view with channels. As
the name suggests, it’s aimed primarily at podcast production, though it might
interest anyone that works with narrative audio. These are all problems that
Adobe’s browser-based new Podcast tool aims to solve.Īdobe Podcast, formerly
known as Project Shasta, is a cloud-based audio production tool. Ever found
yourself with a killer podcast idea, only for it to fizzle out once you realize
all the hoops you have to jump through just to make it? Learning an audio
editing tool is a skill of its own and, while getting your audio masterpiece
online has never been easier, today’s listeners are savvy and won’t tolerate
subpar sound and editing for long.
