DRUG REHAB SAN DIEGO & ALCOHOL ABUSE TREATMENT STATISTICS – YOU’RE NOT ALONE IN
THIS STRUGGLE

About 8% of California residents meet the criteria for substance addiction,
while just 10% of them seek any form of treatment. Alcoholism is the most common
substance use disorder, with 6% of Californians demonstrating a persistent need
for alcohol, compared to 3% having a dependency on prescription drugs such as
opioids, benzodiazepines, etc. Alcohol also comprises more nonfatal visits to
the emergency room than any other diagnoses of drug abuse in California
combined.

That being said, figures for heroin-related emergencies have tripled between
2006 and 2017. Addiction is more frequently found among young adults aged 18 to
25, with their alcohol and drug abuse rates nearly twice the state average. Many
people in Southern California report encountering addictive substances at a very
young age. Studies have also found that by 11th grade, more than half of
California students have already consumed alcohol and 40% have smoked marijuana.

MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT CENTERS IN CALIFORNIA

The occurrence of mental health issues is also on the rise. About 17% of
individuals here in San Diego, California have a type of mental illness. Some
are living with an AMI (any mental illness). Others have a serious mental
illness (SMI). Many suffer from a serious emotional disturbance (SED) or a major
depressive episode (MDE).

According to the California Health Care Almanac, 15.4% of adults in California
had AMI while 4.3% of adults had SMI in 2014. Also, 7.6% of the children within
the state had SED.

According to the same report, 4.3% of the adults in San Diego suffered from SMI
and 7.5% of the children in the area had SED. Between the years 2014 and 2015,
12.3% of the adolescents reported having an MDE; 5.9% of Californian adults
reported the same.

While 37.2% of adults in California received mental health services for AMI
between the years 2011 and 2015, 62.8% of the adults in the state did not get
treatment for AMI. This is unfortunate because, although there are resources
available to those who need support and treatment for mental illness, many
individuals do not take advantage of them.

WHY DON’T PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH RESOURCES?

For one, some people may not even realize that they have a mental health
disorder; perhaps the symptoms are less noticeable or the individual feels like
they are in control of their mental state.

On the other hand, some individuals choose not to get mental health treatment
because they are struggling with feelings of shame and guilt. Unfortunately, a
stigma often surrounds the topic of addiction and mental health disorders. It
makes individuals feel as though they shouldn’t reach out for help.

But, there are many resources available to Californians who need support and
care regarding their mental health. So, if you or someone you know needs help
managing the symptoms of mental illness, there is hope! Also, individuals who
have addiction problems along with a mental health disorder (co-occurring

Medical Detox

The detoxification process can cause havoc to a person’s mental and physical
state. Because of this, it is imperative that recovering addicts detox in
addiction rehabilitation facilities if they want to achieve lasting recovery.
Substance abuse is a hard battle to fight on your own. Our treatment team at our

In most cases, people who have suffered from alcohol or drug abuse experience
withdrawal symptoms as they work to end substance use. These withdrawal symptoms
vary depending on the substance a person was using. Some of the common symptoms
include:

WHAT IS INDIVIDUAL THERAPY?

Individual therapy allows people to discuss their feelings, thoughts,

to a relapse.

WHAT IS GROUP THERAPY?

Through group therapy, participants can interact with like-minded individuals.
Often people who suffer from addiction have difficulty connecting with others.
Addiction often separates people from those they love and from those who care
about them. Many people become socially withdrawn because of their substance use
habits, making it difficult for people to comfortably interact with those around
them.

All of those who are in recovery have their own stories, full of unique and
personal experiences. But, through therapeutic group activities, people who are
working toward recovery can become more engaged with one another and develop
strong support systems during and after their time in an alcohol and drug rehab
center.

Having the support of others is one of the most helpful and effective components
of recovery. Individuals can become more confident and engaged in their journey
as they learn from others. This can encourage emotional growth, increase
self-esteem, and inspire people to have stronger connections with the

San Diego Outpatient Treatment Options

After inpatient treatment is complete, those in recovery can transition into our
intensive outpatient program (IOP) in Southern California. This treatment
program allows individuals to live outside of the addiction treatment facility
while still receiving care and guidance here at Northbound in San Diego.

Even though individuals in outpatient treatment programs don’t usually live at
their rehab facility, they still spend a certain amount of hours every week
getting counseling, engaging in group therapy, and developing relapse prevention
skills.

An intensive outpatient program is helpful in that it offers people the ability
to begin their transition from life in treatment to life outside of rehab. For
many people, going straight from rehab back to “normal” life routines can be
challenging and even dangerous. The pressures and triggers that may present
themselves might cause addiction relapses to occur. This is why it’s so
important for recovering individuals to first go through residential treatment
and outpatient treatment.

We understand that for some clients, it may not be possible to visit us in
person due to geographic limitations, or it may be more comfortable to continue
treatment at home. With this in mind, we also offer telehealth outpatient
treatment to provide addiction support virtually.

In 1938 Bill Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, began creating the
12-Step Program. He recorded the steps in a book called the Big Book for those

wrongdoings that resulted from their addiction.

AA is conducted in group settings, which helps addicts create their communities

Get in Touch

Once you have decided to get treatment, give us a call. A member of our
admissions team will speak with you and conduct a pre-admission assessment. This
will allow them to get to know you a bit better and learn more about your
specific needs and history of substance use. You may have limitations that need
special attention and co-occurring disorders that need to be addressed. This
pre-admission assessment will help with creating an action plan.

Verifying Your Insurance

If you have insurance, verifying your insurance will be the next step after
getting to know you a bit better. Once we get your policy information, we can do
a preliminary check and review your insurance plan’s coverage. We can then
answer any questions about your insurance coverage that you may have.

After your insurance has been confirmed we can take a look at your coverage and
put together a custom plan tailored to meet both your needs and your budget.

Coordinating Your Travel

Getting to the treatment center is integral to you getting treatment. Because of
this, we help our patients to make travel arrangements to our facilities. Over
half of the patients at Northbound Treatment Center travel to our facilities
from a different state. This is due to the expertise our team has in many forms
of addiction.

For travel, there are a few different airports that you may fly into. This
includes Los Angeles Airport (LAX), Orange County Airport (SNA), and Long Beach
Airport (LGB). LAX is around an hour drive, while SNA and LGB are both around a
half an hour drive to our facilities. If you would like to know which option is
best for you, speak with our team. We’d be happy to provide you with
suggestions.

Your Arrival at Northbound Treatment Center

Once you get to Northbound Treatment Center, you’ll meet with a Care
Coordinator. This specialist will help with your full evaluation process. Your
Care Coordinator will help to answer questions as you meet with clinicians,
doctors, and other specialists.

Our team will perform initial health assessments, take a look at your medical
history, and then create your customized plan.

Begin the Recovery Process

Once a plan has been put in place, it’s time to meet with our treatment
specialists. They are able to recommend activities that will help you along your
journey to sobriety. There are a variety of recreational activities that you can
take advantage of to relax and alleviate your stress, discomfort, and anxiety.
For instance, we offer great yoga classes!

PREPARING FOR YOUR STAY

There are a few things you’ll want to bring with you to our rehab facility.
Below are some of the items we recommend you bring with you:

* Toiletries. Make sure you bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, and hair
products.
* Medication. Our team at Northbound will store and distribute your
prescription medication for you while you are visiting our facility.
* Clothing. Make sure you bring all of the clothing you will need. We recommend
comfortable clothing during your stay. Don’t forget your socks, underwear,
shoes, and shoes for the shower.
* Documents. You’ll need to bring your insurance card, prescription card, and a
form of ID (passport, driver’s license, etc.). Do not forget your documents!
* Books, Notebooks, and Other Items. You’ll have some time to relax between
sessions. Make sure you bring downtime items like a notebook, books, a
camera, knitting materials, or anything of the like.
* Photos. Many patients find having photos around relaxing and encouraging.
Feel free to bring photos of your loved ones.
* Contacts. You won’t be allowed your cellphone during your stay at Northbound
Treatment. Because of this, you’ll want to bring a contact list—especially
your emergency contacts.

In addition to these items, you’ll want to bring a positive, upbeat attitude.
Recovery can be a difficult journey, but it is made that much easier when you
focus on the good. There’s a lot of amazing things to look forward to!
