For the second consecutive day, a player posted a front-nine 29 on the North
Course of The Los Angeles Country Club, matching the U.S. Open record. Austin
Eckroat, of Edmond, Okla., a former standout at Oklahoma State and a member of
the 2021 USA Walker Cup Team, flirted with a 28, just missing an 11-foot birdie
on the par-3 ninth hole. He then bogeyed the 12th hole to stall his pursuit to
not only skyrocket up the leader board but also possibly establish a final-round
scoring mark. It was 50 years ago that Johnny Miller won at Oakmont Country Club
with that famous closing 63. In Saturday’s third round, Tom Kim shot the fifth
29 in championship history, following Neal Lancaster, who did it twice
(1995-96), Vijay Singh (2003) and Louis Oosthuizen (2015). In 2017, Eckroat was
the stroke-play medalist in the U.S. Junior Amateur, losing in the quarterfinals
to future OSU teammate Matthew Wolff at Flint Hills National in suburban
Wichita, Kan.

No. 15 Makes History; More History to Come?

The 15th hole on the North Course at The Los Angeles Country Club is by far the
shortest of the five par 3s on the George C. Thomas Jr. design (which is itself
a remodel of W. Herbert Fowler’s original 1921 layout). For Round 3, the hole is
playing as the shortest in U.S. Open history, at 81 yards. That’s 11 yards less
than the iconic No. 7 at Pebble Beach played in the final round in 2010. The
shot is no pushover, though, as Saturday’s hole is placed in the narrow front
section of the crescent-shaped green, an area that is barely 20 feet across in
spots. “It’s not a full shot for any of these guys,” said Jeff Hall, who has
been involved in U.S. Open course setup for the USGA since 2006. “But they’ve
still got to factor in the wind and the firmness and hit a golf shot. I could
see somebody having an 80-yard shot and playing it away from the hole, which
seems crazy in this day and age, but maybe they’re not on top of their game or
it’s the right play in a certain situation.” Through two rounds, No. 15 had
yielded three aces, and a fourth would match the championship record, from 1989
on the 167-yard sixth hole at Oak Hill Country Club.

Eight years ago, Michael Putnam had the honor of hitting the opening tee shot of
the 115th U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, just a stone’s throw from his University
Place, Wash., residence. Greater Seattle is where Putnam and his younger
brother, Andrew, honed their skills, and both went on to attend Pepperdine
University in Malibu, not far from The Los Angeles Country Club. Michael, a
member of the victorious 2005 USA Walker Cup Team, is no longer competing at the
highest levels of professional golf, but the 40-year-old father of three remains
close to the action as a caddie for Andrew, 34, a semifinalist in the 2006 U.S.
Junior Amateur and now a PGA Tour regular. Andrew, who won the 2018 Barracuda
Championship, shot 1-under 139 to make the cut this week at LACC. Michael wasn’t
the only past Walker Cup competitor to caddie in the championship. Chris
Williams, a member of the 2011 USA Team and former No. 1 amateur in the world
who is now an assistant coach at Auburn, carried for Tigers junior Brendan
Valdes.

Fowler Putting on a Show at LACC With Borrowed Putter

Caddies often provide guidance and confidence for a player. But Rickie Fowler
can thank his caddie, Ricky Romano, for a vital equipment change that has been a
key part of his resurgence in 2023. Just before the American Express
Championship in mid-January, Fowler, while playing a casual round in Florida,
asked Romano if he could try his putter. The club was longer than Fowler’s
normal flatstick and had an extended grip, but he rolled a few putts and
instantly fell in love with it. That club has been in Fowler’s bag ever since,
and he has seen his strokes-gained putting go from an abysmal 161st on the PGA
Tour at the end of last season to No. 51. Through 36 holes this week at The Los
Angeles Country Club, he’s made an astonishing 18 birdies, shattering a 36-hole
U.S. Open mark that had stood for 31 years (Gil Morgan registered 14 in 1992 at
Pebble Beach). Fowler’s 10-under total of 130 matches the 36-hole championship
mark set by Martin Kaymer in 2014 at Pinehurst. Fowler enters Saturday’s third
round with a one-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, thanks in part to a very
fortuitous equipment change.

Moldovan Making Most of Second Chance at U.S. Open

Maxwell Moldovan suffered a gut-wrenching playoff defeat in U.S. Open final
qualifying on June 5, losing an eight-hole playoff to Alex Schaake at
Springfield (Ohio) Country Club for the last of the five available spots. The
Ohio State All-American, however, got a mulligan when he was added to the field
a week later as an alternate when the five spots being held for anyone getting
inside the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking on June 12 were not filled.
In fact, the 21-year-old from Uniontown, Ohio, was the last player to get a tee
time at The Los Angeles Country Club, and he is making the most of the
opportunity. After missing the 36-hole cut in 2022 at The Country Club,
Moldovan, one of 19 amateurs in the field, carded a 1-over-par 71 on Friday to
put himself in position to make the cut, which was trending at 2-over 142. This
should bolster his World Amateur Golf Ranking, which moved to No. 19 on
Wednesday. It could also help his chances to make the 10-man USA Walker Cup Team
that will take on Great Britain & Ireland in September on the Old Course at St.
Andrews. Moldovan, a rising senior, had a strong spring, winning the Auburn
(Ala.) Regional and helping the Buckeyes qualify for the NCAA Championships in
Arizona.

The closing triumvirate of par-4 holes on the North Course in this U.S. Open
have drawn a lot of pre-championship attention. In fact, the holes make up the
longest combined yardage for the three closing holes in championship history –
their scorecard yardages of 542, 520 and 492 total 1,554 yards. For Round 1 on
Thursday, the trio is playing slightly shorter than that. But it’s not just the
length: No. 17 features the barranca running along the right side, and though
No. 18 is the shortest of the three, the tee shot plays significantly uphill.
When asked to name a “scoreable” stretch of holes on the North Course, 2022 U.S.
Open co-runner-up Scottie Scheffler quipped, “If I was to choose a non-scoreable
stretch, it would be 16 through 18.” On Thursday morning, 2013 champion Justin
Rose played them in bogey-bogey-double bogey. The previous longest trios of
finishing holes were 1,539 yards at Congressional in 2011 and 1,536 yards at The
Olympic Club in 2012, but both of those stretches included par 5s, two of them
at Olympic. The next-longest three closing par 4s were at Winged Foot’s West
Course in 2020, but its collection of holes were a combined 65 yards shorter
than this year’s.

Strategies, Philosophies Taking Shape for Par-4 6th

The 330-yard, par-4 sixth hole on the North Course at The Los Angeles Country
Club provides options for U.S. Open competitors. The conservative play to the
fairway leaves a short wedge approach over a barranca and bunkers to an
extremely shallow green. Another option is to play a tee shot directly toward
the putting surface, just under 300 yards on a direct line – but the tee shot is
blind, and those who miss the green could find a difficult lie or an awkward
stance. So what’s the best play? “Before this week I thought I was going to lay
up,” said two-time major champion and local product Collin Morikawa. “My caddie
convinced me in like two minutes that we might be going for it. The barranca
down below the bunker, you can get a very bad lie, but you can also get a lie
where you can hack it out to the middle of the green. If I can make four pars
there and maybe give myself one birdie [putt] inside 10 feet, I think I’ll be
all right. Right now I am leaning toward going for it.” “I’m not a huge fan of
blind tee shots or blind shots going into greens,” said two-time U.S. Open
champion Brooks Koepka. “But No. 6 is going to be interesting; you could see
anything from a 7 to possibly a 2. If I was watching, that’s where I’d go.”

Among the 156 players in the U.S. Open field are 20 who ran the daunting
gauntlet of local and final qualifying. This year’s championship attracted the
highest number of entries ever, a total of 10,187 hopefuls, the vast majority of
whose quests began – and ended – at one of the 109 local qualifiers conducted
around the country between April 17 and May 22. A little over 5 percent of that
contingent (530 out of 9,693) moved on to join those exempt into final
qualifying. At that stage, the odds slightly improved, with about 7½ percent
getting to LACC (67 of 878, at 13 sites). Kyle Mueller, 27, of Athens, Ga., who
was an All-America player at the University of Michigan, is one of those 20
players who pulled off the impressive double, advancing through local in
Sylvania, Ohio, and through final qualifying on June 5 at Hawks Ridge Golf Club
in Ball Ground, Ga. It’s the second time Mueller has beaten the long odds,
having done so in 2016 to compete at Oakmont. He will attempt to improve on his
finish there, having shot 77-73 to miss the 36-hole cut by four strokes.

BYU Players Put on Quite a Show in U.S. Open Local Qualifying

On the 50th anniversary of Johnny Miller’s remarkable U.S. Open victory – he
shot a final-round 63 at Oakmont Country Club – five past/current members from
his alma mater (Brigham Young University) advanced from local qualifying with
four claiming medalist honors at their respective sites. Incidentally, the
current BYU coach is Miller’s son, Todd. Former Cougar Rhett Rasmussen was the
first to advance, carding a 65 to earn medalist honors at CasaBlanca Golf Club
in Mesquite, Nev., on April 26. Rasmussen qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open,
missing the cut at Shinnecock Hills. Six days later at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in
Arizona current BYU player Brock Goyen took the top spot with a 67. A week
later, 2023 West Coast Conference champion Zac Jones was the leading qualifier
at Missoula (Mont.) Country Club, the same day Tyson Shelley fired a 66 at
Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, Colo., to take medalist honors. On May 10
at Riverton (Wyo.) Country Club, current Cougar Keanu Akina shot a 66 and then
holed an 18-foot birdie putt in a playoff to take the second and final spot. If
all five should advance out of 36-hole final qualifying, it should be quite the
BYU congregation at LACC, as Johnny Miller is receiving the 2023 Bob Jones
Award, the USGA’s highest honor, early in championship week at a ceremony in Los
Angeles.

Carson Herron made some USGA history last summer when he became the fourth
generation from his family to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. Now he has a chance
to do the same at the U.S. Open. The Minnesota native carded a 1-under 70 at a
local qualifier on May 2 at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in
Albuquerque, a facility the New Mexico sophomore knows quite well. Carson’s
father, Tim, a four-time PGA Tour winner, his grandfather and great-grandfather
(both named Carson) also have played in the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The
Herrons are one of three families to have three generations of U.S. Open
competitors, joining the Alexanders (Tyson, Buddy and Skip) and Loves (Davis
Jr., Davis III and Dru).
