Austin Eckroat, of Edmond, Okla., a former standout at Oklahoma State and a member of the 2021 USA Walker Cup Team, flirted with a 28, just missing an 11-foot birdie on the par-3 ninth hole. He then bogeyed the 12th hole to stall his pursuit to not only skyrocket up the leader board but also possibly establish a final-round scoring mark. It was 50 years ago that Johnny Miller won at Oakmont Country Club with that famous closing 63. That’s 11 yards less than the iconic No. 7 at Pebble Beach played in the final round in 2010. The shot is no pushover, though, as Saturday’s hole is placed in the narrow front section of the crescent-shaped green, an area that is barely 20 feet across in spots. “It’s not a full shot for any of these guys,” said Jeff Hall, who has been involved in U.S. Open course setup for the USGA since 2006. “But they’ve still got to factor in the wind and the firmness and hit a golf shot. I could see somebody having an 80-yard shot and playing it away from the hole, which seems crazy in this day and age, but maybe they’re not on top of their game or it’s the right play in a certain situation.” Through two rounds, No. 15 had yielded three aces, and a fourth would match the championship record, from 1989 on the 167-yard sixth hole at Oak Hill Country Club. But Rickie Fowler can thank his caddie, Ricky Romano, for a vital equipment change that has been a key part of his resurgence in 2023. Just before the American Express Championship in mid-January, Fowler, while playing a casual round in Florida, asked Romano if he could try his putter. The club was longer than Fowler’s normal flatstick and had an extended grip, but he rolled a few putts and instantly fell in love with it. That club has been in Fowler’s bag ever since, and he has seen his strokes-gained putting go from an abysmal 161st on the PGA Tour at the end of last season to No. 51. Through 36 holes this week at The Los Angeles Country Club, he’s made an astonishing 18 birdies, shattering a 36-hole U.S. Open mark that had stood for 31 years (Gil Morgan registered 14 in 1992 at Pebble Beach). Fowler’s 10-under total of 130 matches the 36-hole championship mark set by Martin Kaymer in 2014 at Pinehurst. Fowler enters Saturday’s third round with a one-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, thanks in part to a very fortuitous equipment change. Rasmussen qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open, missing the cut at Shinnecock Hills. Six days later at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Arizona current BYU player Brock Goyen took the top spot with a 67. A week later, 2023 West Coast Conference champion Zac Jones was the leading qualifier at Missoula (Mont.) It’s the second time Mueller has beaten the long odds, having done so in 2016 to compete at Oakmont. He will attempt to improve on his finish there, having shot 77-73 to miss the 36-hole cut by four strokes. Incidentally, the current BYU coach is Miller’s son, Todd. Former Cougar Rhett Rasmussen was the first to advance, carding a 65 to earn medalist honors at CasaBlanca Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev., on April 26. Rasmussen qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open, missing the cut at Shinnecock Hills. Six days later at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Arizona current BYU player Brock Goyen took the top spot with a 67. A week later, 2023 West Coast Conference champion Zac Jones was the leading qualifier at Missoula (Mont.) Country Club, the same day Tyson Shelley fired a 66 at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, Colo., to take medalist honors. On May 10 at Riverton (Wyo.) Country Club, current Cougar Keanu Akina shot a 66 and then holed an 18-foot birdie putt in a playoff to take the second and final spot. If all five should advance out of 36-hole final qualifying, it should be quite the BYU congregation at LACC, as Johnny Miller is receiving the 2023 Bob Jones Award, the USGA’s highest honor, early in championship week at a ceremony in Los Angeles. Now he h Carson Herron made some USGA history last summer when he became the fourth generation from his family to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. Now he has a chance to do the same at the U.S. Open. The Minnesota native carded a 1-under 70 at a local qualifier on May 2 at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, a facility the New Mexico sophomore knows quite well. Carson’s father, Tim, a four-time PGA Tour winner, his grandfather and great-grandfather (both named Carson) also have played in the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The Herrons are one of three families to have three generations of U.S. Open competitors, joining the Alexanders (Tyson, Buddy and Skip) and Loves (Davis Jr., Davis III and Dru).
