HAMILTON EDGE OTTAWA 76-72 TO SETUP CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL SHOWDOWN AGAINST
SCARBOROUGH

13 Aug, 2022 •
The Hamilton Honey Badgers made a comeback to beat the Ottawa BlackJacks 76-72
in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Championship Weekend semifinals
and will now face the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Championship Final on
August 14 at 4 p.m. ET at TD Place Arena. The game will be nationally televised
on CBC tv and tickets for the game are now available via Ticketmaster. The
BlackJacks took an early lead but Hamilton fought back with a strong second half
while withstanding a late BlackJacks’ push for the victory. Ottawa’s Deng Adel
opened the scoring with a three while Hamilton’s Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. finished
off a post-up. The teams traded scores by attacking inside. Guards Christian
Vital and Caleb Agada scored for Hamilton while Chad Posthumus, Zena Edosomwan
and Thomas Scrubb scored in the paint for Ottawa. The BlackJacks continued to
score inside to lead 20-12 after one quarter. The Honey Badgers started the
second quarter with Agada finding Tilmon Jr. for a pair of dunks. Ottawa’s
Tyrell Green nailed back-to-back threes. Both teams pushed the pace as Agada
continued making plays. He made a drop pass to Martin Krampelj for a fast break
dunk. The teams got to the free throw line as well. Tyrrel Tate made all three
free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to help Ottawa keep the
lead. The Honey Badgers made their first threes of the game as Keevan Veinot and
Koby McEwen scored to cut the deficit to 35-34. Walt Lemon Jr. responded for
Ottawa as they led 37-34 at halftime. Scrubb and Agada traded baskets in the
paint. Posthumus scored off an offensive rebound before McEwen hit another three
to tie the game at 41. The teams both made runs as Hamilton went ahead after a
triple by Christian Vital. Edosomwan kept scoring at the rim. Hamilton’s Aaron
Best finished through contact and hit the ensuing free throw to give his team a
57-55 edge after three quarters. Best continued to provide energy by scoring and
grabbing offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter. Adel nailed a three to keep
the game close but Hamilton’s guards continued to score. BlackJacks guard Kadre
Gray scored at the basket as his team trailed 67-62 going into Elam time.
Scrubb and Adel finished consecutive three-point plays to cut the lead to two
points. Hamilton responded again. McEwen followed that with a three while Timon
Jr. found Best for a corner three. Lemon Jr. scored off a drive to cut the lead
to three but Agada got to the free throw line by driving to the basket. He then
hit the game-winning free throw. The Honey Badgers shot better than the
BlackJacks from the field (43 to 34 per cent) and from beyond the arc (30 to 19
per cent). Four Hamilton players finished with double figures in points. Vital
(16 points, seven rebounds), Best (14 points, four rebounds, two assists) and
McEwen (15 points, nine rebounds) led the scoring. Hamilton outscored Ottawa
42-28 in the paint. Hamilton head Ryan Schmidt said the team talked about
embracing the moment in the days leading up to the game. “Their grit and
perseverance really really stood out to me,” he added. McEwen pointed to the
players’ experience. “When it comes down to those situations, a lot of us have
been battled tested and we have a lot of dogs in our team too,” he noted. “We
don’t accept defeat no matter what the score is or how much we’re down. In those
situations, I have full confidence in my guys because I know we’re going to bite
down and do whatever it takes to get a win.” The BlackJacks had 37 bench points
as Edosomwan (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Tate (13 points) were major
contributors. Adel finished with 13 points and five rebounds while Scrubb had
eight points, six rebounds and three assists. “I’m just really proud of this
team,” Edosomwan said. “I’m really proud of the job coach [James Derouin] has
done with us just in confidence we have in him, the confidence he has in us…one
thing I love about [the team] is they know when to lock in.” The Honey Badgers
will face the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the CEBL Championship finals on Aug.
14. Both Scarborough and Hamilton are aiming for their first CEBL championship.

HONEY BADGERS FACE BLACKJACKS IN CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND SEMIFINALS

12 Aug, 2022 •
The Ottawa BlackJacks face the Hamilton Honey Badgers in the Canadian Elite
Basketball League (CEBL) Championship Weekend semifinals on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m.
ET. The game will be played on the BlackJacks’ home court at TD Place Arena.
Viewers can watch the game live on CBC national television as well as CBC Gem,
CBC Sports, CEBL+ and NXT Level Sports in the U.S. The Honey Badgers finished
the regular season in first place with a 14-6 record, while the BlackJacks
finished as the eighth seed, earning an automatic bye to the semifinals as the
host city of Championship Weekend. Hamilton lost three of their last four games
to close out the regular season. Ottawa entered the CEBL postseason on a
three-game winning streak. Hamilton and Ottawa split the season series one game
each – Hamilton won the first matchup 86-75 on July 2 and Ottawa emerged
victorious 104-95 in the rematch on July 24. The BlackJacks’ strong finish to
the regular season is credited in part to James Derouin, who took over head
coaching duties for Ottawa after an 0-3 start. Ottawa is not short on firepower.
In their lone defeat of the first-place Honey Badgers, the BlackJacks led by as
many as 21 points and withstood a late Hamilton push for the victory. The
BlackJacks shot the ball well (49 per cent from field, 40 per cent from three)
and will look to do so again. Forward Deng Adel had 23 points, 10 rebounds and
four assists in the previous contest. Ottawa played without point guard and team
leading scorer Walt Lemon Jr. in that game and a key narrative to watch will be
how Hamilton defends the former Chicago Bulls guard, who has a knack for getting
to the rim but has struggled to hit his mark from beyond the arc this season. A
key head-to-head battle is the matchup between centres Chad Posthumus and
Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. Posthumus is second in the league in rebounds per game (9.2)
while Tilmon Jr. leads the CEBL in field goal percentage (63.9 per cent). In
their previous tilt, Posthumus finished with eight points and 13 rebounds while
Tilmon Jr. had 16 points and five rebounds. Hamilton’s strength comes from their
guards and their depth. Caleb Agada was named CEBL Canadian Player of the Year.
He finished third in the CEBL in assists (5.2) and second in steals (2.1) per
game. Teammate Christian Vital led the Honey Badgers in scoring (17.5 points per
game) and led the league in steals per game (2.2). Honey Badgers guard Koby
McEwen was named Sixth Man of the Year, averaging 12.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and
2.1 steals per game. The BlackJacks also have depth. They have five players
averaging over nine points and six players averaging over four rebounds. Lemon
Jr. is second in the league in average assists (5.8) while Adel is a stellar
scorer and presence on the glass. Ottawa is first in average rebounds (38.8),
second in average assists (19.2) and third in average points (87.0). “I think
the biggest thing that I liked about it was that you see their firepower,”
Hamilton head coach Ryan Schmidt said of their previous loss against Ottawa.
Schmidt, who won Coach of the Year on Wednesday night at the annual CEBL Awards,
sees the benefits of lessons learned from that game. “From a coaching
perspective, it’s probably better that we lost that game I think because I think
it showed these guys, regardless of their record, regardless if they got the
automatic bye, this is a team that can beat us if we don’t come out and do what
we’re supposed to do,” Schmidt noted. The winner of Friday night’s semifinal
game will face the winner of the other semifinal between the Niagara River Lions
and the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the championship game on Aug. 14 at TD
Place arena. Fans will be able to live stream all games including the playoffs
on the CEBL’s OTT streaming service CEBL+, the CEBL’s official app, CEBL Mobile
for iOS and Android devices, cbcsports.ca , the free CBC Gem streaming service,
the CBC Sports App for iOS and Android devices and on NXT Level Sports in the
U.S. As part of its playoff coverage, CBC Sports will broadcast the quarterfinal
games Sunday, August 7, semifinal games Friday, August 12, and the Championship

BLACKJACKS DOWN ALLIANCE 81-62 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

02 Aug, 2022 •
The Ottawa BlackJacks closed out their regular season with an 81-62 home triumph
over the Montréal Alliance. It was the BlackJacks’ third win in a row as they
finish eighth (7-12) in the final standings. The Alliance (4-16) lost their
sixth straight game to finish tenth. BlackJacks guard Walt Lemon Jr. was back in
the lineup after missing the past few games. The game started close before
Ottawa pulled away in the second quarter. Both teams didn’t score on their first
few possessions before Johnny Berhanemeskel hit a three. Ottawa’s Deng Adel and
Montréal’s Elijah Ifejeh both scored at the rim as the home team led 9-4. Chad
Posthumus came off the bench and went to work in the paint to score twice. The
Alliance made a run as Hernst Laroche stole the ball and layed it in at the
other end to trim the lead to three. While the threes didn’t fall, Montréal
focused on getting into the paint. They trailed 21-15 after 10 minutes.
Montréal’s Mambi Diwara drew fouls getting to the rim and hit the free throws in
addition to hitting a jump shot to keep the game close. Alain Louis hit the
Alliance’s first three of the game and James Jean-Marie scored to give the
visitors their first lead of the game. Ottawa then went on a 12-0 run with
threes by Berhanemeskel and Thomas Scrubb. The home team went ahead 40-36 at the
half after Montréal’s Kemy Osse sank a three at the buzzer. Berhanemeskel nailed
his fifth three-pointer on five attempts. Isiah Osborne responded with two
triples of his own to keep the score close. The BlackJacks picked up the pace by
increasing their pace in transition. Lemon Jr. picked up his scoring with five
quick points as Ottawa increased their lead to 59-47 after three quarters. Kadre
Gray added a corner three while the home crowd cheered as Adel rose up to block
Laroche’s layup at the rim. The BlackJacks kept their double-digit lead going
into the Elam Ending. Montréal made defensive stops while Rickman and Osse sank
jump shots to decrease the deficit to nine points. However, Ottawa responded
with scores by Lemon Jr. and back-to-back threes by Berhanemeskel. The
BlackJacks fared well on the glass (47-38 rebounding advantage) and from three
(40 per cent). Berhanemeskel led all players with 25 points while Lemon Jr.
contributed 13 points and four assists. Posthumus had another double-double (12
points, 15 rebounds). “I feel good. I think we’re heading in the right
direction,” Berhanemeskel noted. “It was a good win. You’ve got to win those
kind of games too. When Montréal was playing their style of game, we knew it was
going to be tough and we gutted it out. I think we got a little bit better
today.” He noted how everyone on the team had their moments during their
three-game winning streak. The Alliance shot 36 per cent from the field and 20
per cent from three. They outscored Ottawa 37-29 in bench points with Ifejeh (15
points, seven rebounds) and Osborne (eight points, three assists, one steal)
being the key contributors. Among the starters, Rickman finished with nine
points and one steal while Cayo led the team with 11 rebounds and three steals.
“They were better than us,” Louis said. “They played with more energy…we just
did not bring the fight in the second half.” Louis said the team learned a lot
from the season. “If we could get more time together, it could work out,” he
noted. The former Carleton Raven and BlackJacks guard called it “cool” being
back in Ottawa. The BlackJacks face the Hamilton Honey Badgers in the CEBL
Championship Weekend semi-finals in Ottawa on Aug. 12. Fans will be able to live
stream all games including the playoffs on the CEBL’s OTT streaming service
CEBL+, the CEBL’s official app, CEBL Mobile for iOS and Android devices,

BLACKJACKS HOST ALLIANCE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

01 Aug, 2022 •
The Ottawa BlackJacks host the Montréal Alliance in the final game of the CEBL
regular season on Aug. 1 at 7:30 pm ET. The BlackJacks (7-12) are eighth place
while the Alliance (4-5) are tenth. It’s a game between two teams going in
opposite directions. The BlackJacks have won two games in a row while the
Alliance have lost five straight. Ottawa is also preparing for their CEBL
Championship Weekend semi-final on Aug. 12. The BlackJacks’ most recent victory
came against the defending champion Edmonton Stingers on July 27. Ottawa took an
early lead and kept it for the victory. Shooting was key for Ottawa as they shot
50 per cent from the field and 40 per cent from three. Tyrrel Tate
(three-for-six) and Deng Adel (two-for-five) both sank multiple threes. Adel had
a game-high 30 points and scored from all areas of the court. They also won the
rebounding battle 47-38 in a game between the two best rebounding teams. Ottawa
leads the league in average rebounds (38.7) while Edmonton is second (37.8). The
BlackJacks used a team-effort for rebounding. Four players had at least four
rebounds, including Chad Posthumus who had 10 points and 15 rebounds coming off
the bench. Offensive efficiency and rebounding will be crucial against Montréal.
The Alliance are tenth in average rebounds (31.9). Interior defence will also be
a factor. Ottawa is third in average blocks (3.5) while Montréal is tenth (2.0).
The Alliance won their only previous meeting against the BlackJacks, 86-80 on
May 31. In that game, Montréal shot the ball better from two and three-point
range and had more assists. They were also close to matching Ottawa in rebounds.
Nathan Cayo, Abdul Mohamed and Emondre Rickman will be facing Posthumus, Adel
and Ottawa’s forwards. Cayo leads the team in average points (12.6), rebounds
(4.6) and field goal percentage (55.2 per cent). Meanwhile, Montréal’s offence
will also come from their guards. Hernst Laroche is a key facilitator as he and
Alain Louis lead the team in average assists. Laroche also notches 1.4 steals on
average. Against Ottawa earlier, he finished with 10 points, six assists and
five rebounds. Defence will be important for the Alliance as they are tenth in
average points scored (76.9) and field goal percentage (43.1). Limiting the
BlackJacks’ offence will be key to keep the game close. Montréal can rely on the
three-pointer as they are fourth in three-point percentage (36.0). Laroche (44.7
per cent from three), Louis (37.5) and Kemy Osse (37.2) are among their best
deep shooters. The Alliance will be looking to finish their inaugural season
with a win. This game will serve as preparation for Ottawa for their semi-final
game against the Hamilton Honey Badgers on Aug. 12. Fans will be able to live
stream all games including the playoffs on the CEBL’s OTT streaming service
CEBL+, the CEBL’s official app, CEBL Mobile for iOS and Android devices,
cbcsports.ca , the free CBC Gem streaming service, the CBC Sports App for iOS

OTTAWA COMES AWAY WITH 100-91 WIN IN EDMONTON

31 Jul, 2022 •
The Ottawa BlackJacks travelled to Edmonton and came away with a 100-91 win over
the Edmonton Stingers. The BlackJacks are now 7-12 with the Stingers 10-9. The
Stingers opened the game on a 9-3 run and established their offence inside the
paint. They used their ball movement to find lanes in to Jordan Baker and Brody
Clarke who finished at the rim. Following the run, Ottawa answered back with a
run of their own that pushed them out to a lead at the quarter break. Defensive
rebounds became increasingly important for both sides as Clarke, Baker, Zena
Edosomwan and Deng Adel worked their magic around the rim. After a quarter of
basketball, Ottawa led the Stingers 30-26. Ottawa continued to pound the paint
in the second quarter, and the Stingers extended to the perimeter with threes
from Aher Uguak. A back and forth start to the quarter was opened up by a Tyrrel
Tate layup and a Jackson Rowe dunk and free throw to start the BlackJacks run
that continued throughout the second. While Clarke and Uguak responded, the
BlackJacks continued to find lanes to the rim and pushed their lead to
double-digits, 52-38 before an Uguak three put the game back to single-digits.
At halftime, Ottawa led 54-45. Ottawa kept the Stingers away throughout the
third quarter. Despite Burrell scoring early for the Stingers in the third, Adel
and Posthumus used their size in the paint to finish at the rim. Ottawa went up
60-51, Edmonton pushed the deficit back to five points and Ottawa extended it
back out to 68-59 BlackJacks. Edmonton chained together stops at the end of the
quarter and capitalized in transition with a three and a layup. At the end of
the third, Ottawa led 81-74. Adel’s performance gave him 23 points at the end of
the third with Uguak scoring 15, Burrell leading the Stingers with 17 points.
Edmonton wanted to get out in transition off defensive rebounds and steals.
Though it worked in the first three quarters, they were able to match it with
more defensive stops in the fourth, and chain together a run to push back on the
BlackJacks lead. Ottawa with a nine-point lead early in the fourth got pushed
back by Uguak and Woods making the BlackJacks lead three points, 89-86. Chad
Posthumus got to the free throw line as the Elam buzzer sounded and gave the
BlackJacks one more. The score 90-86 Ottawa with the target score 99. Jackson
Rowe started Elam time inside the paint to make it 92-86 BlackJacks and Adel got
to the rim to put the BlackJacks five points away from victory. Uguak answered
with a long corner two and Rowe got to the free throw line to continue the
back-and-forth Elam time. A Kamba three put the Stingers at 91 points and Rowe
put the BlackJacks at 97, two away from a win. Tate from the perimeter gave the
BlackJacks the 100-91 win. Adel finished with 30 points on the night, 63 per
cent shooting, to go with eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Next on the scoreboard was Tate who hit the game winner to give him 19 points,
two rebounds and four assists. Rowe scored 13 points while Gray finished with 12
points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Leading the scoring for the Stingers
was Uguak who recorded 21 points on 66 per cent shooting. Burrell scored 17
points, grabbed eight rebounds, assisted on six and recorded two steals and a
block. Kamba scored 15 points while Baker added 10 points. Adel talked about his
rhythm offensively tonight, “I think it came pretty naturally, I did a good job
of attacking the basket today and not settling for jump shots, and then with
Walt (Lemon Jr) not travelling with us and being out I got to be more
aggressive, not just to score but to make plays for my teammates.” Fans will be
able to live stream all games including the playoffs on the CEBL’s OTT streaming

EDMONTON HOSTS OTTAWA IN PLAYOFF SEEDING GAME

27 Jul, 2022 •
The 10-8 Edmonton Stingers host the 6-12 Ottawa BlackJacks in a battle for
playoff seeding at 7 p.m. MT. The Stingers sit tied with Scarborough and
Saskatchewan. This is the third time these two teams are meeting up, having
split their previous matchups. Ottawa won the first one, 92-84 at home over the
Stingers. Now going to Edmonton they are coming off a win and want to gain some
momentum going into playoffs. In their win at home, Walt Lemon Jr led the
scoring with 23 points and their big man in Chad Posthumus recorded 10 rebounds
to lead that column. Lemon Jr is the BlackJacks leader. He averages 17 points
per game and alongside Johnny Berhanemeskel, pace the BlackJacks offence that
ranks third in points per game with 86.6. In the BlackJacks 104-95 win over the
Hamilton Honey Badgers on July 24, Berhanemeskel scored 22 points, one behind
forward Deng Adel. Adel and Zena Edosomwan combined for 22 rebounds in the win
over Hamilton, and around the paint their physicality makes a tough matchup for
any defence. Their opponents, the Edmonton Stingers, have two forwards that
match that physicality and impact on both ends of the floor, Brody Clarke and
Jordan Baker. Edmonton’s 96-88 win over Ottawa in their second meeting showed
Clarke recording 14 points on 71 per cent shooting and Baker adding five
rebounds and a block. Clarke and Baker inside the paint give the Stingers a
constant presence to facilitate their offence through, and a duo on defence that
won’t back down to a physical contest. In Edmonton’s 101-100 win over Guelph at
home, Baker showed his prowess on both ends of the floor with 10 points and 10
rebounds while Clarke added 13 points. The attack of Adel against Clarke while
Baker and Edosomwan battle on the boards and with second chance opportunities,
will be rounded out by the shooting of Trahson Burrell and Kadre Gray. Burrell
is coming off a 37-point performance against the Guelph Nighthawks on 60 per
cent shooting, and his ability to be a threat from all over the floor is matched
by Gray for the BlackJacks. Gray scored 16 points against the Honey Badgers and
with Berhanemeskel, they can let it fly or take it to the hoop, combining for 11
three-point attempts and 10 attempts inside the arch. Both teams have forces
inside the paint that constantly make themselves known on the glass, and both
have shooters that have the confidence to efficiently make long distance shots.
The difference maker lying in second chances and how the battle goes inside,
this is an important game for both sides. Edmonton wants to separate themselves
in the cluster of 10-8 teams and Ottawa wants to get momentum going as playoffs
draw closer.

BLACKJACKS END LOSING STREAK WITH 104-95 VICTORY OVER HONEY BADGERS

25 Jul, 2022 •
The Ottawa BlackJacks snapped a four-game losing streak with an 104-95 victory
over the Hamilton Honey Badgers. The BlackJacks are now 6-12 while the Honey
Badgers (13-5) drop their second straight game. The BlackJacks were playing
without point guard Walt Lemon Jr as Johnny Berhanemeskel started instead. Both
teams were firing from deep early on. Thomas Scrubb hit a turnaround jumper to
put Ottawa on top before Caleb Agada and Nikola Djogo responded with
three-pointers. Ottawa’s Kadre Gray then sank back-to-back triples. The home
team then focused on attacking inside as Deng Adel scored in the midrange and
found Zena Edosomwan for a layup. Chad Posthumus scored twice at the rim while
Bernard Thompson scored off a steal as the BlackJacks led 27-19 after one
quarter. Hamilton’s Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. nailed a three early in the second
quarter but the BlackJacks kept getting rebounds and scoring. Adel drew fouls in
the paint and hit free throws to help Ottawa lead by double digits. He then
stole the ball and scored off the fast break. The BlackJacks got into the bonus
midway through the second quarter as they continued to hit free throws.
Berhanemeskel drilled a three to extend the lead to 50-32. They led 56-42 at
halftime after Honey Badgers guard Christian Vital hit a three. Berhanemsekel
picked up where he left off in the first half with two consecutive threes early
in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets as Posthumus scored down low.
Ottawa went into the fourth quarter up 81-63. Tilmon Jr. scored four straight
points for Hamilton by establishing post position. The BlackJacks responded with
consistent scoring inside and outside as Jackson Rowe flushed down a dunk. Both
teams made multiple trips to the free throw line as Djogo scored five straight
points to cut the deficit to 95-81 heading into Elam time. Adel scored off two
drives to the basket to move the BlackJacks closer to victory. However, Hamilton
made a late run with an Agada three-pointer and Tilmon Jr. put back to cut the
lead to seven. Ottawa would close out the victory thanks to their offensive
rebounding and game-winning free throws by Adel. Adel finished with 23 points
and 10 rebounds while Berhanemeskel had 22 points and four assists. Gray had 16
points while Rowe had 11 points and Thompson had 10. The BlackJacks shot 49 per
cent from the field and 40 per cent from three. They had 47 rebounds to
Hamilton’s 39 and outscored the Honey Badgers 42-34 in the paint. “To be honest,
we didn’t do our best on Tuesday when we played [Fraser Valley] so to see
everyone respond like this and dig in a little bit, continue to put your head
down and I feel like everybody responded the right way,” Berhanemeskel noted.
“So now it’s trying to keep building off it.” Hamilton outscored Ottawa 32-23 in
the fourth quarter and Elam time but were outscored in the other three quarters.
They were led by Djogo (19 points, eight rebounds, four steals), Tilmon Jr. (16
points, five rebounds) and Vital (15 points, six rebounds, six assists). “Credit
to [Ottawa]. They played exceptionally well,” Hamilton head coach Ryan Schmidt
noted. “To me, they’re one of the top two if not three [most] talented teams in
the league.” Schmidt said he told his team it’s one of the Honey Badgers’ best
offensive performances of the year. “Defensively, we couldn’t stop them from
transition, even on our made baskets,” he added. The Honey Badgers are now only
a half-game up on the Niagara River Lions for the top seed. Meanwhile, Ottawa
moves within two games of the Guelph Nighthawks for seventh place. The Honey
Badgers travel to face the Niagara River Lions on July 29, the first of two
straight games against Niagara. The BlackJacks go to face the Edmonton Stingers
on July 27. Fans will be able to live stream all games including the playoffs on
the CEBL’s OTT streaming service CEBL+, the CEBL’s official app, CEBL Mobile for
