Three billion pounds per year are produced in the United States and 12 billion globally. 1,3-butadiene is produced through the processing of petroleum and is mainly used in the production of synthetic rubber, but is also found in smaller amounts in plastics and fuel. Exposure to 1,3-butadiene mainly occurs in the workplace, including the following industries: synthetic elastomer (rubber and latex) production, petroleum refining, secondary lead smelting, water treatment, agricultural fungicides, production of raw material for nylon, and the use of fossil fuels. Exposure can also occur from automobile exhaust; polluted air and water near chemical, plastic or rubber facilities; cigarette smoke; and ingestion of foods that are contaminated from plastic or rubber containers. 18 WHEEL INSPECTION 18-Wheeler Inspection Requirements All 18-wheelers in Texas are required to have a valid safety inspection sticker. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Department of Public Safety has adopted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Parts 390–393 and 395–397), and Federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (Parts 171-173, 177 and 178). ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION Accident Investigation: - Thousands of accidents occur throughout the United States every day. The failure of people, equipment, supplies, or surroundings to behave or react as expected causes most of them. Accident investigations determine how and why these failures occur. By using the information gained through an investigation, a similar, or perhaps more disastrous, accident may be prevented. It is important to conduct accident investigations with prevention in mind. There are currently no specific standards for accident investigation. ACTIVE SHOOTER-MANAGEMENT 1910.1020(a) -The purpose of this course is to explain to employees and their designated representatives a right of access to relevant exposure and medical records; and to provide representatives of the Assistant Secretary a right of access to these records in order to fulfill responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. ANHYDROUS AMMONIA Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) is the foundation for all nitrogen (N) fertilizers. Although almost 80 percent of the earth's atmosphere is comprised of nitrogen, it is not in a chemically and biologically unusable form for plants. ARSENIC AWARENESS Arsenic is a chemical element with the symbol As and atomic number 33. Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in combination with sulfur and metals, but also as a pure elemental crystal. Arsenic is a metalloid. It has various allotropes, but only the gray form, which has a metallic appearance, is important to industry. ASBESTOS AWARENESS What is asbestos? Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion. Asbestos has been used in products, such as insulation for pipes (steam lines for example), floor tiles, building materials, and in vehicle brakes and clutches. BATTERY SAFETY AWARENESS Most batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead. Because batteries contain chemicals, chemical reaction by-products, and an electrical current they can pose a hazard to workers if not handled properly. Workers that operate, maintain, and recharge batteries should use caution. BEHAVIOR-BASED SAFETY Behavior-based safety (BBS) is the "application of science of behavior change to real world safety problems". or "A process that creates a safety partnership between management and employees that continually focuses people's attentions and actions on theirs, and others, daily safety behavior. BROKEN WORKER-HOW TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE Dealing With Difficult People Victims often complain and feel they are ... everyone must find a way to work together effectively and cooperatively. Therefore, understanding what motivates difficult people will help you identify the best. CADMIUM Cadmium is a chemical element with the symbol Cd and atomic number 48. This soft, silvery-white metal is chemically similar to the two other stable metals in group 12, zinc and mercury. Like zinc, it demonstrates oxidation state +2 in most of its compounds, and like mercury, it has a lower melting point than the transition metals in groups 3 through 11. Cadmium and its congeners in group 12 are often not considered transition metals, in that they do not have partly filled d or f electron shells in the elemental or common oxidation states. CARCINOGENS A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes. Several radioactive substances are considered carcinogens, but their carcinogenic activity is attributed to the radiation, for example gamma rays and alpha particles, which they emit. Common examples of non-radioactive carcinogens are inhaled asbestos, certain dioxins, and tobacco smoke. Although the public generally associates carcinogenicity with synthetic chemicals, it is equally likely to arise in both natural and synthetic substances.[1] Carcinogens are not necessarily immediately toxic; thus, their effect can be insidious. CARGO_SECUREMENT The new cargo securement rules apply to the same types of vehicles and cargo as the old rules, covering all cargo-carrying commercial motor vehicles (as defined in 49 CFR 390.5) operated in interstate commerce. This includes all types of articles of cargo, except commodities in bulk that lack structure or fixed shape (e.g., liquids, gases, grain, liquid concrete, sand, gravel, aggregates) and are transported in a tank, hopper, box or similar device that forms part of the structure of a commercial motor vehicle. CAUSTIC SODA SOLUTION Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye and caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na+ and hydroxide anions OH−. Sodium hydroxide is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns. CHAINSAW SAFETY Chainsaw safety is every saw operator's job. Always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling or working around chainsaws. Eye protection - approved goggles or safety glasses. Hearing protection - earplugs or muffs. CHEMICAL SAFETY Chemical safety is the practice of using occupational chemical substances in a manner that ensures the safety and health of humans and prevents damage to the environment. It covers all aspects of chemical use, including the manufacture, transport, use, and disposal of chemicals. CHLORINE Chlorine is a chemical element with the symbol Cl and atomic number 17. The second-lightest of the halogens, it appears between fluorine and bromine in the periodic table and its properties are mostly intermediate between them. Chlorine is a yellow-green gas at room temperature. COLD WEATHER SAFETY The arctic air, together with brisk winds, can lead to dangerously cold wind chill values. People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to frostbite in a matter of minutes. Areas most prone to frostbite are uncovered skin and the extremities, such as hands and feet. Hypothermia is another threat during extreme cold. COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE 1. Communicate face-to-face whenever possible 2. Provide clear information 3. Combine verbal and nonverbal communication 4. Don’t just hear – listen 5. Ask questions 6. Handle conflicts with diplomacy 7. Refrain from gossip 8. Avoid being personal with your co-workers 9. Avoid discussing controversial topics 10. Offer positive feedback COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS SAFETY Compressed gases and cylinders must be properly stored, transported and used to prevent injury and accidents. Industrial gas cylinders are color coded to provide identification "at a glance". Regulators, cylinders and cylinder valves must be inspected regularly to ensure safe operation. Gases that may react with each other must be stored separately. CONFLICT RESOLUTIONS Conflict resolution is conceptualized as the methods and processes involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution. Committed group members attempt to resolve group conflicts by actively communicating information about their conflicting motives or ideologies to the rest of group (e.g., intentions; reasons for holding certain beliefs) and by engaging in collective negotiation.[1] Dimensions of resolution typically parallel the dimensions of conflict in the way the conflict is processed. Cognitive resolution is the way disputants understand and view the conflict, with beliefs, perspectives, understandings and attitudes CROWD MANAGEMENT What is Crowd Management? “Crowd control” is the prevailing term to define a major responsibility of facility management in stadiums and arenas. However, managing and assisting crowds—a practice known as crowd management—is a more proactive approach and often more effective than trying to control a crowd after things go wrong. DISASTER MANAGEMENT Disaster management is how we deal with the human, material, economic or environmental impacts of said disaster, it is the process of how we “prepare for, respond to and learn from the effects of major failures” . Though often caused by nature, disasters can have human origins. DOT SECURITY PART 1 DOT's security plan rules are designed to protect high-consequence shipments of hazmat from malicious misuse, sabotage, and diversion. Only some facilities are required to maintain a DOT security plan. Read more about the security plan requirements here. "Security plan" should not be confused with "security awareness." DOT SECURITY PART 2 DOT's security plan rules are designed to protect high-consequence shipments of hazmat from malicious misuse, sabotage, and diversion. Only some facilities are required to maintain a DOT security plan. Read more about the security plan requirements here. "Security plan" should not be confused with "security awareness." DRIVING SAFETY * Stay Alert - Actively pay attention to your actions and those of the drivers around you when you are driving. * Avoid Assumptions - Don't make the mistake of assuming that other drivers are going to do or what you think they should do. * Use Turn Signals - While you can't depend on others always signaling their intentions when driving, you can certainly control whether or not they have realistic expectations for your actions. * Buckle Up - Wearing your seat belt is an essential safety tip for drivers. EMERGENCY PLANNING A definite plan to deal with major emergencies is an important element of OH&S programs. Besides the major benefit of providing guidance during an emergency, developing the plan has other advantages. You may discover unrecognized hazardous conditions that would aggravate an emergency situation and you can work to eliminate them. The planning process may bring to light deficiencies, such as the lack of resources (equipment, trained personnel, supplies), or items that can be corrected before an emergency occurs. In addition, an emergency plan promotes safety awareness and shows the organization's commitment to the safety of workers. The lack of an emergency plan could lead to severe losses such as multiple casualties and possible financial collapse of the organization. Since emergencies will occur, preplanning is necessary. An urgent need for rapid decisions, shortage of time, and lack of resources and trained personnel can lead to chaos during an emergency. Time and circumstances in an emergency mean that normal channels of authority and communication cannot be relied upon to function routinely. The stress of the situation can lead to poor judgment resulting in severe losses. A well thought out, well organized emergency response plan will help to eliminate these issues. ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS Having environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. Preserving the environment that we live in for future generations EXCAVATION TRENCHING SHORING Trench collapses, or cave-ins, pose the greatest risk to workers’ lives. When done safely, trenching operations can reduce worker exposure to other potential hazards include falls, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres, and incidents involving mobile equipment. OSHA standards require that employers provide workplaces free of recognized hazards. The employer must comply with the trenching and excavation requirements of 29 CFR 1926.651 and 1926.652 or comparable OSHA-approved state plan requirements. EYE SAFETY Statistics indicate that most eye injuries can be prevented by using adequate shields and glasses. Standard safety glasses protect eyes from flying particles of metal, wood, stone, plastic or glass coming from the front only. Safety glasses with semi-side shields protect eyes from flying particles coming from the front or the side. EYE WASH & SHOWERS Emergency eye washes and showers are used in labs, chemical plants, paper mills, and other environments with potentially harmful chemicals or materials. They're often required to meet government regulations and safety standards. Combination eye-wash stations are all-in-one eye wash and shower units. Drench hoses serve as fixed eye-rinse stations or can be removed from their holder for directing the spray where needed. FATIGUE Fatigue is a feeling of tiredness. It may be sudden or gradual in onset. It is a normal phenomenon if it follows prolonged physical or mental activity, and resolves completely with rest. However, it may be a symptom of a medical condition if it is prolonged, severe, progressive, or occurs without provocation. FIRE CAULK Fire caulking is important in preventing the spread of deadly fires in commercial properties and homes that are more vulnerable. If a fire were to spread into electrical systems or in other vulnerable areas, it can cause a lot of damage. Fire caulking works by containing the fire to the room in which it originated. FIRE WARDEN A fire warden also plays a crucial role if fire breaks out. In the event of a fire emergency, fire wardens must keep employers and visitors safe and ensuring a safe evacuation. FIRST AID First and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury. First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. FLAMMABLES AND COMBUSTIBLES Since the advent of the industrial revolution, the use of non-water-based chemicals has increased dramatically. Exposure to the hazards associated with these chemicals has also increased. One potential hazard is flammability. To prevent fires, hazardous liquids require special precautions in storage, handling and use. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Fire Code (IFC) have developed guidelines for the safe storage and use of flammables. GAS HAZARDS The primary purpose of the Gas Hazards Control Program shall be to promote safety in the repair of marine vessels and facilities by promoting the training and certification of persons engaged in inspecting such vessels and facilities to determine their gas free status. GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER (GFCI) A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), or Residual Current Device (RCD) is a type of circuit breaker which shuts off electric power when it senses an imbalance between the outgoing and incoming current. The main purpose is to protect people from an electric shock caused when some of the current travels through a person's body due to an electrical fault such as a short circuit, insulation failure, or equipment malfunction. Standard circuit breakers shut off power when the current is too high, like 10, 15, or 20 amps, but a mere 0.030 amps through a body can cause paralysis of skeletal muscles and stop the human heart. The GFCI / RCD breaks the circuit when it detects an imbalance of only 0.005 amps (0.030 amps in Australia and some European and Asian countries). GUIDANCE ON SIMULTANEOUS OPERATIONS The risks associated with simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) in support of offshore oil and gas exploration and production, for example, related construction and survey activities, can be great and potentially dangerous HAND WRIST FINGER OSHA's Position On Hand, Wrist and Finger Safety Training Consider the fact that we use our hands, wrists and fingers more than any other individual parts of our bodies. Whether it’s in construction, driving, office or laboratory work, these essential body components are in constant use and, as such, are susceptible to injury. HAZMAT Hazardous materials response (HAZMAT) team means an organized group of employees, designated by the employer, who are expected to perform work to handle and control actual or potential leaks or spills of hazardous substances requiring possible close approach to the substance. The team members perform responses to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances for the purpose of control or stabilization of the incident. HAZWOPER OVERVIEW Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER; HAZ-waw-pər) is a set of guidelines produced and maintained by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration which regulates hazardous waste operations and emergency services in the United States and its territories. HEALTH AND WELLNESS The primary difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving it. You truly cannot have health without first achieving wellness. Wellness has a direct influence on overall health, which is essential for living a robust, happy, and fulfilled life. HEALTH HAZARDS CONSTRUCTION Construction workers are exposed to a variety of health hazards, every day, that can result in injury, illness, disability, or even death HEALTH HAZARDS-PERSONAL HYGIENE Personal hygiene refers to maintaining cleanliness of one's body and clothing to preserve overall health and well-being. It includes a number of different activities related to the following general areas of self-care: washing or bathing, including cleansing oneself after using the toilet; taking proper care of the mouth; grooming and dressing; and keeping clothing clean. HEALTH WELLNESS V2 We’re committed to creating a work environment that promotes employee health and wellness. This course is the first step in raising awareness and rollout of our new workplace health program, which includes promoting activities or policies that encourage and support healthy behaviors in the workplace. HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM-CHROMIUM VI Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] is one of the valence states (+6) of the element chromium. It is usually produced by an industrial process. Cr (VI) is known to cause cancer. In addition, it targets the respiratory system, kidneys, liver, skin and eyes. HOT WORK Hot work is a process that can be a source of ignition when flammable material is present or can be a fire hazard regardless of the presence of flammable material in the workplace. Common hot work processes involve welding, soldering, cutting, brazing burning and the use of powder-actuated tools or similar fire producing operations outside of designated hot work areas HOW THE BRAIN AND EYE WORK TOGETHER Helping employees understand how errors occur and to spot error traps can avert mistakes that could have significant consequences HOW TO MAKE STRESS YOU FRIEND How to Make Stress You Friend • Change the way you think about stress. Health experts believe that it’s better to embrace your triggers than work towards reducing them. ... • Remember that everyone deals with stress. In stressful situations, it’s easy for you to feel alone, which takes an even greater toll on your emotions. • Use stress as motivation. ... HUMAN ERROR Human error is a broad category that includes the clearly identifiable, easily diagnosable, and seemingly excusable mistakes we all make. HYDROGEN SULFIDE Hydrogen sulfide is the chemical compound with the formula H2S. It is a colorless chalcogen hydride gas with the characteristic foul odor of rotten eggs. It is poisonous, corrosive, and flammable. HYDROGEN SULFIDE COMPETENCE TRAINING <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=Hydrogen+Sulfide+Competence+Training&type=ie_sb_medici_wk14_2020¶m1=DE7C3A15-9BDC-4DF6-AED4-B2AC902C812E_2020-04-02_ie¶m2=sb__medici¶m3=NGC__wk14_2020¶m4=1000&geo=US&ver=22.21.3.48&hsimp=yhs-ext_onb&hspart=norton&ei=UTF-8&nojs=1"> Our Hydrogen Sulfide Awareness Online Training is designed to provide general information and guidelines to workers who may be exposed to hydrogen sulfide in the workplace in accordance with OSHA’s General Duty Clause and ANSI/ASSP Z390.1-2017 which sets forth accepted practices for hydrogen sulfide training programs. Hydrogen sulfide is a common hazard found in the oil and gas industry. IDENTITY THEFT Identity Theft- While identity theft can happen to anyone, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk. If you think someone is using your personal information to open accounts, file taxes, or make purchases, visit IdentityTheft.gov to report and recover from identity theft. INCIDENT REPORTING AND INVESTIGATION Accident/incident reporting and investigation is judged from a prevention of severity and reduction in frequency standard. In other words, if there are fewer accidents/incidents and they are less severe, the reporting and investigation process is working. INCIDENT REPORTING INVESTIGATION OSHA strongly encourages employers to investigate all incidents in which a worker was hurt, as well as close calls (sometimes called "near misses"), in which a worker might have been hurt if the circumstances had been slightly different. In the past, the term "accident" was often used when referring ... INFORMATION GATHERING REPORT WRITING When it comes to getting a clear information gathering concept, the simplest way to define it would be the process of collecting information about something you are interested in. For those in the cybersecurity industry, this is the first step to take during the earlier stages of any hacking activity (both cracking and ethical hacking), when any black- or white-hat researcher needs to gain as much information as possible about the desired target INTRODUCTION TO OSHA Introduction to OSHA History OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a Federal agency of the U.S. Department of Labor OSHA’s responsibility is to improve worker safety and health protection On December 29, 1970, President Nixon signed the OSH Act. INTRODUCTION TO SEMS The Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) was introduced in 1991 after the East Bay Hills Fire in Oakland Hills. SEMS was adopted in 1993 under Government Code Section 8607. SEMS intent is to improve coordination of Federal, State and local emergency management and response. JOURNEY MANAGEMENT Journey management is a planned and systematic process for reducing transportation-related risks in a company’s operations. In short, it is a key element of safety in the workplace — for fleets and other employers. Across all industries, crashes cost employers approximately $9.25 billion a year, according to the National Safety Council. JSEA JSEA - Job Safety and Environmental Analysis. Today, many companies within the oil and gas industry use the Job Safety Analysis Process (also referred to as a JSA, Job Hazard Analysis, or JHA). The JSA is a very effective means of helping reduce incidents, accidents, and injuries in the workplace. LAB SAFETY Hazards present in the laboratory where it is to be used. Laboratory personnel must receive training regarding the Laboratory standard, the CHP, and other laboratory safety practices, including exposure detection, physical and health hazards associated with chemicals, and protective measures. The Hazard Communication standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). LAND TRANSPORTATION-DRIVING SAFETY Land transportation safety recommended practice OGP 1. Introduction Background Driving-related incidents are commonly the single largest cause of fatalities in OGP member company operations. It is an E&P industry expectation that all companies operating land transport, or providing LEAD Lead is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (from the Latin plumbum) and atomic number 82. It is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials. Lead is soft and malleable, and also has a relatively low melting point. LEADERSHIP SKILLS When you first look for a leadership position, the range of skills required can seem daunting. There is, however, general agreement among leaders that certain skills are more important than others. These, then, are the skills that you need to develop first if you aspire to become a leader—and more importantly, wish to be an effective leader. MARINE DEBRIS Marine debris, also known as marine litter, is human-created waste that has deliberately or accidentally been released in a sea or ocean. Floating oceanic debris tends to accumulate at the center of gyres and on coastlines, frequently washing aground, when it is known as beach litter or tide-wrack. MARSEC MARSEC (MARitime SECurity) is the three-tiered United States Coast Guard Maritime Security system (alert state) designed to easily communicate to the Coast Guard and the maritime industry pre-planned scalable responses for credible threat MATERIAL HANDLING Manual materials handling (lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling) is the most common category of compensable injuries in the United States work force, with four out of five of those injuries involving the lower back. OSHA recommends using a formal training program to reduce materials handling hazards. MOBILE EQUIPMENT AND FLAGGER SAFETY Participants will learn the requirements to be a flagger—from skills and abilities to personal protective equipment. We will become familiar with flagging devices and their proper usage, and learn to set up flagger stations around a work zone. These are all components to aid us in conveying messages to drivers. MRI SAFETY MR Safety continues to evolve and in response, the ACR's Committee on MR safety created the ACR Manual on MR Safety with updates and critical new information which replaces all earlier versions of the ACR Guidance Document on MR Safe Practices. NATURALLY OCCURRING RADIATION MATERIALS SAFETY OSHA requires employers to protect workers from exposure to ionizing radiation sources that are not regulated by the NRC or other federal agencies, such as X-ray equipment, some accelerators, incidental accelerator-produced radioactive materials, ion implanters, and some naturally-occurring radioactive material (NORM). NEAR MISS OSHA defines a near miss as incidents “in which a worker might have been hurt if the circumstances had been slightly different.” They are a precursor to accidents and are opportunities to identify hazards and unsafe conditions. OBSERVATION REPORTING AND CLOSURE A good safety observation report should be comprehensive and provide the details needed by the organization for future improvements on health and safety in the workplace. In writing safety observation reports, the following tips can be used to effectively produce a comprehensive safety observation report. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH Established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, OSHA opens its doors on April 28, 1971. During its initial decade, OSHA issued the first standards for asbestos, lead, carcinogens, and cotton dust. The OSHA Training Institute, safety and health training grants, the On-Site Consultation Program, State Plans, and whistleblower protections for workplace safety are also established. OFFICE SAFETY Welcome to safety and health training on office hazards. This training is recommended for all office workers. OIL PATCH FALLS HAZARD After this module you should be able to –identify the most common fall hazards –take the steps necessary to avoid those hazards PANDEMIC A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges and spreads around the world, and most people do not have immunity. Viruses that have caused past pandemics typically originated from animal influenza viruses. PINCH POINTS A pinch point, also called a nip point, is a point on a machine where a person or a part of their body can get caught in between moving parts. Gears, rollers, belt drives, and pulleys are all examples of typical pinch points in the workplace. OSHA standard 1910.211 provides guidance on what constitutes a nip point PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS The employer shall provide portable fire extinguishers and shall mount, locate and identify them so that they are readily accessible to employees without subjecting the employees to possible injury. 1910.157 (c) (2) Only approved portable fire extinguishers shall be used to meet the requirements of this section. PORTABLE TOOLS These tools help us to easily perform tasks that otherwise would be difficult or impossible. However, these simple tools can be hazardous and have the potential for causing severe injuries when used or maintained improperly. Special attention toward hand and power tool safety is necessary in order to reduce or eliminate these hazards. POWERED PLATFORMS The powered platform standard was promulgated in 1989 with some of the provisions based on the American National Standard A-120, a national consensus standard, which prescribed recommended practices for powered platforms. OSHA believes some of the collection of information requirements in this standard impose a one time burden only such as developing written work procedures and preparing emergency action plans. PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT (PSM) AND METHODS Process safety management (PSM) is addressed in specific standards for the general and construction industries. OSHA's standard emphasizes the management of hazards associated with highly hazardous chemicals and establishes a comprehensive management program that integrates technologies, procedures, and management practices. PROCESS SAFETY V2 Welcome to the general awareness course on safely using, handling, moving, and storing highly hazardous chemicals. This training session is for employees and employees of contractors who work with processes that involve highly hazardous chemicals. It is designed for workplaces covered under Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) Process Safety Management Standard (29 CFR 1910.119) PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE It allows employees to make complaints about unsafe working conditions to OSHA, the federal agency responsible for enforcement of the OSH Act. For that reason, it prohibits employers from disciplining or discharging employees in retaliation for exercising their rights under the OSH Act. REASONABLE SUSPICION DRUG TESTING Drug testing with reasonable suspicion happens when an employer has reason to believe an employee is impaired. In most cases, the employer will advise the individual not to return to work until their drug test results are back. RETURN TO WORK On June 18, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) issued guidance to assist employers and workers in safely returning to work and reopening businesses deemed non-essential. RIGGING Whenever there is any doubt as to safety, the operator shall have the authority to stop and refuse to handle loads until safety has been assured. 1926.753(c)(2) A qualified rigger (a rigger who is also a qualified person) shall inspect the rigging prior to each shift in accordance with § 1926.251. RISK ASSESSMENT Identifying hazards by using the risk assessment process is a key element when ensuring the health and safety of your employees and customers. OSHA requires businesses to conduct risk assessments. According to regulations set by OSHA, assessing hazards or potential risk will determine the personal protective gears and equipment a worker may need for their job. ROOT CAUSE Concerning Root Cause Analysis OSHA says: During an incident investigation, an employer must determine which factors contributed to the incident, and both OSHA and the EPA encourage employers to go beyond the minimum investigation required and conduct a root cause analysis. A root cause analysis allows an employer to discover the underlying or systemic, rather than the generalized or immediate, causes of an incident. SAFETY ATTITUDE ACTIONS When you have a positive safety attitude, you think first and then take action. Your mind is able to recognize unsafe habits or behavior. You stay alert while on the job. Your positive safety attitude helps you to recognize hazards that arise and respond appropriately. SAFETY HOUSEKEEPING GENERAL SAFETY AND HOUSEKEEPING PROCEDURE . Effective house keeping can eliminate workplace hazards and helps get the job done easily and properly. A good housekeeping program plans and manages the orderly storage and movement of materials from point of entry to exit. It includes a material flow plan to ensure minimal handling SAFETY SIGNS AND TAGS Safety instruction signs. Safety instruction signs, when used, shall be white with green upper panel with white letters to convey the principal message. Any additional wording on the sign shall be black letters on the white background. 1926.200 (f) SAFETY WORKPLACE INSPECTION Workplace inspections help prevent incidents, injuries and illnesses. Through a critical examination of the workplace, inspections help to identify and record hazards … SCAFFOLDING Scaffolding, also called scaffold or staging, is a temporary structure used to support a work crew and materials to aid in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, bridges and all other man-made structures. Scaffolds are widely used on site to get access to heights and areas that would be otherwise hard to get to. SCISSOR LIFT Scissor lifts are a great option for ensuring you and your employees can safely get to items that are up high or can safely change out signs; there are even scissor lifts for cars. If you need to be able to reach high often, it is time to skip the scissor lift rental and purchase one for yourself. SEMS OVERVIEW The Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) was introduced in 1991 after the East Bay Hills Fire in Oakland Hills. SEMS was adopted in 1993 under Government Code Section 8607. SEMS intent is to improve coordination of Federal, State and local emergency management and response. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment is a type of harassment involving the use of explicit or implicit sexual overtones, including the unwelcome and inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. Sexual harassment includes a range of actions from verbal transgressions to sexual abuse or assault. Harassment can occur in many different social settings such as the workplace, the home, school, churches,.. SHIFT WORK ALERTNESS Working a shift outside the usual 8-hour day shift does have some benefits such as an easier commute, fewer crowds in stores and other public areas during the day, and sometimes, more days off in a row. SHORT SERVICE EMPLOYEES The Short Service Employee (SSE) program applies to employees and subcontractors who have less than six months service with the Company or craft. The purpose of the program is to ensure that these contractor employees have an initial orientation of safety. SLIPS TRIPS FALLS Slips, Trips and Falls. NSC Stands with OSHA on Fall Safety. It may come as a surprise that the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death is falls. In 2019, 39,443 people died in falls at home and at work, according to Injury Facts ®. For working adults, depending on the industry, falls can be the leading cause of death. SPILL CONTROL AND CONTAINMENTS (SPCC) Not all spills are equal. OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard classifies spills in two categories: 1. Incidental spills do not pose a significant health and safety risk to the workers or cleanup crews 2. Emergency spills are hazardous to employee health and safety and could become an emergency within a short time frame The severity and the likelihood of a spill will dictate your approach to spill response. Emergency spills will naturally involve a higher degree of planning SPOTTER SAFETY On some sites, the spotter wears a high-visibility safety vest that’s a different color than the vests worn by other workers. The word “Spotter” may appear on the vest. In cooler weather, spotters can wear the type of high-visibility gloves used by police officers when directing traffic. STOP WORK Stop work – When a worker perceives an unsafe condition, hazard, or behavior on the job site, they have an obligation to stop work or intervene on behalf of another person at risk.If the danger is immediate, stop work immediately and begin the SAFER sequence. STORM WATER Stormwater, also spelled storm water, is water that originates from rain, including snow and ice melt.
