BRIEFING

UK: The FTSE publishes annual figures on the number of women on boards and in
senior leadership positions in the FTSE 350, as well as 50 of the UK’s largest
companies; the House of Commons international development committee holds an
evidence session in Westminster as part of its inquiry into the humanitarian
situation in Gaza, with witnesses from the World Health Organisation and the
World Food Programme; the Chatham House think tank in London holds its Security
and Defence Conference 2024, focused on the changing global security order, with
speakers including Tony Radakin, chief of the UK Defence Staff.

International: UN Security Council meets at the UN headquarters New York to
discuss the political and humanitarian situations in Syria.

ON THIS DAY

In 1814 Ludwig van Beethoven’s 8th Symphony was premiered in Vienna, Austria, in
a concert that also featured the Seventh Symphony and the popular Wellington’s
Victory; in 1854 the composer Robert Schumann attempted suicide by jumping off a
bridge into the Rhine, but was rescued by fishermen. He spent the remaining two
years of his life in an asylum; in 1879 Constantin Fahlberg, a researcher,
accidentally discovered the artificial sweetener saccharin. The findings were
jointly published with Ira Remsen, a professor at Johns Hopkins University,
Baltimore, Maryland; in 1900 the Labour Representation Committee was founded in
London. In 1906, 26 MPs were elected to parliament, and on February 15, 1906,
the name the Labour Party was adopted; in 1917 “Captain Jack” Crawford, known as
the Poet Scout for his verses about the Wild West, died aged 69. He and other
former scouts such as Buffalo Bill shaped the legends of the American frontier.
His works include The Poet Scout (1879) and The Broncho Book (1908).

NATURE NOTES

A couple of youngsters were hanging around outside the Co-op in a picture
postcard-perfect village in southern England. They had long hair, and were
slightly unkempt, but the customers going in and out barely gave them a second
glance. Eventually they strolled off, hooves clopping on the pavement, to crop
the grass outside a Georgian redbrick house. Handsome, hardy and compact, New
Forest ponies are native to the British Isles. They roam freely in the national
park, both in town and open countryside, their grazing part of the reason the
area looks as it does with open “lawns” amid scrub and woodland. They are owned
by the New Forest commoners who round them up once a year for a health check.
