OUR HISTORY


Shriners Fraternity

The Shriners fraternity has always shared a desire to help those in need. In the
late 1910s, as a polio epidemic swept across the United States, it was apparent
that many children were going without appropriate care. In 1921, the fraternity
made the momentous decision to create a hospital designed for kids with
orthopedic conditions.


A Shreveport Legacy

Led by Shriner and Shreveport businessman James Rowland, Louisiana Shriners
proposed to bring the first hospital to Shreveport, having secured land,
funding, and an orthopedic surgeon.

On May 12, 1922, hundreds gathered to witness the placing of the cornerstone of
the first Shriners Children's hospital. The first patient – a little girl with
clubfoot – was seen on Sept. 16, 1922. What began as a single hospital is now a
world-renowned healthcare system. Although much has changed from technology,
medical breakthroughs, the polio vaccine, and other transformations, the mission
of Shriners Children’s has remained the same.

FROM THE BEGINNING: SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN



In 1922, construction began on the first Shriners Hospital in Shreveport,
Louisiana. It was the perfect location; an underserved city surrounded by
farming communities. To address the needs of patients during construction, the
hospital’s first physician saw patients at an office in town.
