The post said something like, “I’m ready to catch some fish. Any other mods I should do? I’m new to fishing.” I re-read the last part several times. Hobie makes a nice kayak, and it should be nice for something that costs almost $5,000 (more for the 360 drive). You can buy expensive equipment and look like a pro on the water, but you can’t buy your way to becoming a good fisherman. To be fair, maybe the guy got the kayak for free or has so much money that a Hobie Pro Angler is pocket change to him. The post got me thinking about all the money people spend to become better anglers when the real way to do it is time on the water. We put together a list of what we think are the best fishing kayaks under $1000. These are tournament-worthy kayaks that can hold their own against more expensive models on the market. Money doesn’t make a fisherman, and you do not need to go broke to catch a fish or compete in kayak bass tournaments. "YOU CAN’T BUY YOUR WAY TO BECOMING A GOOD FISHERMAN." The Seastream Angler 120 (Retail $799.00) Seastream is owned by Feelfee Kayaks, and the Seastream Angler 120 is a solid, rotomolded polyethylene kayak (the same plastic almost all kayaks are made of) that is 12 feet, 3 inches long, 35 inches wide, and weighs 95 pounds. It has a 450-pound weight capacity, making it a good option for bigger anglers. This sit-on-top kayak has lawn chair-style seating, which happens to be the same seat that is in the Feelfree Moken kayak. The seat is adjustable to two levels, and there is under-seat storage, a secure bow storage compartment, and a gear console in the middle that is great for storing cellphones and wallets. It has a rear tank well for a kayak crate and two flush-mounted rod holders. One of the best features is the vertical rod holders on each side. There are rod tip protection pockets near the bow and straps towards the middle to strap down a rod vertically and out of the way. After getting three rods from my kayak crate hung in an overhanging tree, the vertical rod storage is an important feature for me. Seastream advertises this kayak as stable with the ability to stand and fish with confidence. This kayak is designed for the paddler and performs well on the water. Check out the Seastream Angler 120 on the Seastream website Seastream Angler 120 Kayak The Perception Outlaw 11.5 (Retail $929.00) The perception Outlaw 11.5 kayak is a popular kayak that has nearly developed a cult-like following. It’s 11 feet, 6 inches long, 35 inches wide, and weighs 77 pounds. It has a 425-pound weight capacity, which makes it another good option for larger anglers. The Outlaw has a unique design, and it looks like a cross between a kayak and a stand-up paddleboard. Some of the best features are the elevated lawn chair style seat, the four rear slanted rod holders, and the gear storage areas on each side of the seat that can hold Perception saddlebags explicitly designed for the Outlaw. It has plenty of bow storage and a tank well of a good size to add a crate or store gear. The Perception Outlaw 11.5 is known for its incredible stability, but everything has tradeoffs. The increase in stability gives this kayak a slower speed. However, it’s a kayak, and they were never meant to be fast. Shop the Perception Outlaw 11.5 Kayak on Amazon.com Perception Outlaw 11.5 Kayak The Pelican Catch Mode 110 Fishing Kayak (Retail $799.00) The Pelican Catch Mode 110 kayak is a lightweight, durable fishing kayak that is 10 feet, 8 inches, 34.5 inches wide, weighs 83 pounds, and has a weight capacity of 375 pounds. What makes this kayak stand out from all others is the RamX material used exclusively by Pelican. This is a lightweight, proprietary material previously used on the Coleman Crawdad Jon boats, which are still on the water after many decades. Pelican purchased the rights from Coleman so they are the only kayak manufacturer using RamX. The Pelican Catch Mode 110 has several great features, including the lawn chair-style seat that folds down and offers the angler an elevated platform to sit and fish. There are three flush-mounted rod holders, two cup holders, a tankwell with bungee cords, and a forward storage area with a net to secure items. It is a stable kayak, so anglers can stand to fish, and it paddles well. A drop-down skeg is designed to come loose instead of breaking if it strikes an object. The Pelican Catch Mode 110 is great on lakes but is a phenomenal river kayak. Shop the Pelican Catch Mode 110 Kayak on Amazon.com Pelican Catch Mode 110 Kayak The Lifetime Yukon Angler 11.5 Kayak (Retail $574.00) We love the look of this kayak, and it’s a great deal for under $600. The Yukon is 11 feet, 5 inches long, 32 inches wide, and weighs 78 pounds. It has lawn chair-style seating, a front hatch for gear storage, two flush-mounted rod holders, and gear tracks on both sides. Lifetime advertises the Yukon as stable and allows the angler to stand and fish. If you like to film yourself fishing, the Yukon has a front camera mount built in. One nice addition is the skeg wheel. This small wheel in the built-in skeg makes loading and unloading the kayak easier on the angler. The Yukon is narrower than the other mentioned kayaks, but it’s a tradeoff for better paddle ability. Generally, the longer and narrower a kayak, the faster and more straight it paddles. The Yukon can be purchased at Walmart or slightly cheaper at Sam's Club. Shop the Lifetime Yukon Angler 11.5 Kayak at Walmart.com Lifetime Yukon Angler 11.5 Kayak Wrapping Up Remember, the kayak doesn't make the fisherman, and all you need to do is get on the water. Do not be intimidated by anglers with expensive rigs, and don't let it keep you out of tournament fishing. All of the kayaks we discussed here are tournament-sufficient kayaks under $1000. There are other options and even cheaper options that will work, but the four kayaks we discussed have all the features and comfort needed for a day or two on the lake fishing for fun or fishing to win. -By Kayak Bass Magazine Staff As an Amazon associate, we earn income from qualifying purchases when you click on a link.
