A man who was severely burned when a man allegedly tossed flaming liquid on him
on the subway Saturday jumped in front of his fiancée to protect her, he told
The New York Post from the hospital.
Twenty-three-year-old Petrit Alijaj’s upper body was completely covered in
bandages after doctors told him he had burnt on 30 percent of his body
protecting his fiancée, according to the Post.

Alijaj, told the outlet that he was on the No. 1 train at approximately 2:45
p.m. with his fiancée and his cousin when train car pulled into the Varick
Street station stop in lower Manhattan.
According to the victim, a man, later identified as 49-year-old Nile Taylor, got
on the train while holding a cup filled with some liquid, set it on fire, and
proceeded to throw it on Alijaj.
The outlet reported that Alijaj said he was able to turn his body to protect his
fiancée and his cousin, who were sitting next to him, from the dangerous
substance.
Alijaj’s shirt caught fire and Taylor fled the train, according to the report.
Taylor was apprehended by authorities about five blocks away near the entrance
to the Holland Tunnel at Canal Street and Renwick Street, shortly after the
attack, according to the report.
