KEYNOTE FIRESIDE CHAT: KEEPING UP THE PACE—SUSTAINING MOMENTUM AND AMBITION TO
COP28 AND BEYOND

With COP28 aspiring to mobilise the general public, not just increase awareness,
what are stakeholders doing to achieve this? How does the experience of previous
COPs inform COP28 as it focuses on immediate action by governments and
businesses? Given that environmental goals rely on long-term planning but
climate-change pressures grant little time, how can stakeholders from government
to business manifest a greater sense of urgency?

PANEL: CLOSING THE LOOP—BUILDING RESILIENT SUPPLY CHAINS THROUGH CIRCULAR
ECONOMIES TO TACKLE WASTE

Waste does not vanish. Humans dispose of over 2bn tons of household waste a year
globally. That’s more than 60 tons every second, causing multiple environmental
issues. Throwaway culture generates huge amounts of unnecessary carbon dioxide
and destroys the planet’s biodiversity through the unnecessary use of natural
resources. How can companies work to develop truly circular supply chains while
delivering profit to shareholders? What models are needed to turn policy into
action and how will the transition to circularity be funded?

IN CONVERSATION: WATER SCARCITY AND ADAPTATION—REPLENISHING WATER IN REGIONS
EXPOSED TO ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS (FIRESIDE)

Huge parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas and even Europe face the risk of
large-scale droughts. Water scarcity can devastate health, agriculture, the
economy and energy, affecting an estimated 55m people annually. While 40% of the
world’s population today suffers from water scarcity, by 2030, 700m people could
risk being evacuated due to drought. What plans do governments and businesses
have to help the regions most affected by water scarcity? What solutions could
replenish water in these regions?

PANEL: WORD ON THE HIGH STREET—MAKING FASHION AND BEAUTY SUSTAINABLE

Sponsored by BASF

The fashion industry produces 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon
emissions. This is more than all international flights and maritime shipping
combined. While there is demand, supply from fast-fashion outlets will continue.
How can consumers be encouraged to prioritise sustainable clothing lines and
demand sustainability in what they wear? Throughout this process, how can the
impact on fashion’s bottom line be minimised so the industry can accept change?

PRESENTATION: WHY HAS CLIMATE CHANGE NOT YET TRIGGERED THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AT
SCALE? STRATEGIES FOR COMPANIES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE

With high risks in commodity and energy resilience and cost, disruptive climate
events, and increasing reputation risks, why are more companies not more radical
in inventing new, more competitive and resilient business models? Most companies
are very good at optimising within their current business model. But it’s a lot
harder to innovate the entire business model. What have some companies done to
disrupt the ‘business as usual’ approach, and how can the rising risk of
significant market disruption in response to climate change spur companies on to
innovate? Some strategies and examples of success.

PANEL: BALANCING OBJECTIVES— HOW CFOS AND CSOS CAN PURSUE SUSTAINABILITY AND
FINANCIAL GROWTH

It may seem that CFOs and CSOs have different objectives. While the CFO is
responsible for financial planning and analysing the business strengths and
weaknesses from the cost and profit perspective, the CSO’s role may not be as
defined and also depends on the nature of the business. But how can the CFO and
the CSO meet both of their objectives by working together? What are the examples
of successful collaboration in practice?

Extinction Rebellion, where he is the lead editor of XR’s flagship talk:
‘Heading for Extinction (and what to do about it).’ His job is to keep the

and de-escalation. You’ll find him on the edge of protest marches and

PANEL: EDUCATION FOR NET ZERO: TEACHING LEADERS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE
TRANSITION ECONOMY

As the world moves towards a net-zero economy, leaders need the skills to
effectively navigate this momentous transition. Change now happens faster than
organisations can comfortably adapt, while bosses find themselves wishing for a
more comprehensive education in engaging with stakeholders and supply-chain
partners. How are educators and their institutions working to meet leaders’
needs amid the energy transition? How can learning work to unlock economic
potential and growth opportunities? And what transformative educational

FIRESIDE CHAT: GFANZ—HAS THE WORLD ECONOMY ADJUSTED TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Achieving the ambitious objective of limiting global temperature increases to
1.5°C from pre-industrial levels requires a transformative, whole-economy
transition. Every company, bank, insurer, and investor must now reassess its
business models, develop credible strategies for the transition to a low-carbon,
climate-resilient future, and ultimately implement these plans. The Glasgow
Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) has emerged as a promising initiative
aimed at accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy. But has it made a
meaningful impact, or is it just empty rhetoric?. Has it been successful in
mobilising private capital towards sustainable investments and are its members
truly committed to transitioning their portfolios to net-zero emissions?

FIRESIDE: ETHICAL ELECTRIFICATION — ENSURING CLEAN AND ETHICAL CRITICAL MINERAL
SUPPLY CHAINS

Electrification is heralded as a fundamental solution to the climate crisis.
However, is it only moving the problem out of sight? The Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC) stands as a focal point for this unsettling nexus, with UNICEF
estimating 40,000 innocent young souls are subjected to the horrors of child
slavery in the relentless pursuit of cobalt extraction. Does mining cobalt and
lithium for electric cars and other renewable energy sources increase pollution
and social injustice, rather than remedy it? What can be done to ensure that
critical mineral supply chains are slavery free and the pollution from their
extraction does more good than harm?

PANEL: EATING SUSTAINABLY—WHAT IT MEANS AND HOW TO DO IT

The food and beverage sector is making progress with sustainable initiatives,
particularly in specific packaging commitments from the Paris agreement and
companies’ own net-zero roadmaps. But without an effective system for recycling,
is all this investment worthwhile? And how is food waste being addressed? What
are the most innovative approaches to making the sector’s supply chains more
sustainable?

KEYNOTE PANEL: TRANSITIONING AN OIL-BASED ECONOMY TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Fossil fuels are currently responsible for 65% of global greenhouse-gas
emissions. For decades, fossil fuels have been the driving force of Middle
Eastern economies. How are these two factors being approached in the Middle
East? What can others learn from Middle Eastern initiatives? Where is the rest
of the world on its journey towards clean energy? Is it possible for a
corporation to achieve a shift to 100% renewable energy? How can business help
drive policy action through ambition loops?

PANEL: SECURING WATER SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA

As the largest natural resource, water is essential for our survival and
required to meet many needs, from agriculture to households to various
industrial aspects. Therefore, a discussion about water sustainability is
essential when discussing the road to a sustainable and secure future,
particularly in the Middle East. What are the current issues that we are facing
in the region when speaking about water sustainability? How are local companies
addressing these issues? Which innovations have been recently developed to
combat this?

CLOSING PANEL: A CIRCULAR POLICY FOR THE UAE’S AVIATION SECTOR

Aviation is a sector plagued by a significant waste issue, with the
International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimating an alarming 6.7
million tons of waste generated annually. This includes 23% of untouched food
and drink, along with 17% comprising recyclable materials like plastic bottles
and newspapers. Complicating matters further, global policies diverge on how
airlines should handle their waste. In light of this challenge, Etihad Airways
and Abu Dhabi Airports have embarked on a collaborative effort to combat airline
waste. How are they working together to reduce waste? Moreover, what actionable
steps can be taken to drive circularity and ultimately reduce waste across the
airline industry as a whole?
