THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY IN RECOVERY

In March 2020, OpenTable launched the State of the Industry site to illustrate
how COVID-19 has been impacting restaurants around the globe. More than a year
later, the data from restaurants on our platform continues to tell a powerful
story - identifying moments of recovery as cities, states, and countries reopen.
We’ll continue to update the data daily to support ongoing work by government
agencies, restaurant associations, and the media and to help our restaurant
partners on their path to recovery.

Update: Starting on February 18th 2022, we’ve updated the dataset from January
1, 2022 onward to compare seated diners from 2022 to 2019 (year over three
year). Data from 2021 continues to be compared to 2019 (year over two year), and
data from 2020 continues to be compared to 2019 (year over year). As of April
28, 2021, for the displayed datasets percentages are rounded down. For a
complete view, download the dataset.

ABOUT THE DATA

The first section shows seated diners from online, phone, and walk-in
reservations
How many people dined in restaurants in 2022, 2021 and 2020, as compared to
pre-pandemic in 2019.

The details: we continue to measure the overall impact of COVID-19 on the
industry by showing seated diners at a sample of restaurants on the OpenTable
network across all channels (online reservations, phone reservations, and
walk-ins) in regions or metros with 50+ restaurants on the OpenTable network.

As of February 2022, we’ve updated the dataset from January 1, 2022 onward to
compare seated diners from 2022 to 2019, and we continue to compare seated
diners from 2021 and 2020 to 2019. This represents seated diners across all
channels from the same sample of restaurants. While COVID-19 has had a
significant impact on restaurant closures, this data does not account for the
changes in the number of restaurants on our platform in a given area. As of
April 28, 2021, for the displayed datasets percentages are rounded down. For a
complete view, download the dataset.

For year-over-year comparisons, we continue to compare the same day of the same
week in 2020-22 to the same day of the same week in 2019 (not the same date).
For example, we’d compare Tuesday of week 11 in 2022 to Tuesday of week 11 in
2019.

To better reflect the state of the industry overall, this dataset is based on a
sample of approximately 20,000 restaurants that provide OpenTable with
information on all of their inventory in states or metros with 50+ restaurants
on the OpenTable network. This sample of restaurants typically accounts for a
majority of our seated online reservations.

The second section identifies moments of recovery by looking at those
restaurants open for online reservations and states with the greatest recovery
This graph demonstrates where we are seeing recovery start to take shape, by
looking at daily seated diners from 2022, 2021, and 2020 compared to 2019 levels
at only the restaurants that have reopened and are once again serving guests in
a given market. For example, if there were 50 seated diners in restaurants that
have recently reopened in a given location on May 11, 2019 and on the same day
in the same week in 2022 there was 1, then 2% would be displayed. For this
chart, only markets with 500+ restaurants on OpenTable of which 10%+ are
accepting online reservations are included.

The charts on the right show (1) top growing regions defined by those that have
had the greatest growth (% change) in seated diners over the last 14-day period
compared to the same date range in 2019 and (2) top performing metros defined by
those regions that have seated the most total diners in the last 7-day period as
compared to the same date 7-day range in 2019. Both graphs are limited to top
performing regions North America.

MARKET RECOVERY FROM RESTAURANTS REOPENING FOR ONLINE RESERVATIONS GLOBALLY AND
BOTH THE TOP GROWING AND TOP PERFORMING REGIONS IN NORTH AMERICA

The details: To help understand where recovery is taking shape, we looked at
only the restaurants who have reopened their doors to serve guests again. Growth
in seated diners at these restaurants now as compared to 2019 highlights how
creative restaurants have gotten over the past year from increasing their
outdoor seating to reducing their turn times so they can seat more guests.

The graph reflects the percentage of restaurants in our dataset that are
accepting reservations from diners globally. The top growing and performing
charts reflect the same rebounding restaurants in regions in North America.

SEATED DINERS AT RESTAURANTS OPEN FOR RESERVATIONS

This table shows how the industry is responding as markets reopen by showing
year-over-year seated diners across all channels at only the OpenTable
restaurants that have chosen to reopen in a given market to demonstrate where we
are seeing recovery start to take shape.

As an example, if there were 50 seated diners in OpenTable restaurants that have
reopened in a given locale on May 11, 2019 and on the same day in 2021 there was
1, then 2% will be displayed. Only markets with 500+ restaurants on OpenTable of
which 10%+ are accepting online reservations are included in this sample.
