When it comes to pressure relief and motion isolation, full size hybrid mattress both the medium and firm options are excellent, while each has its distinct advantages. The medium model worked best for those who weighed less than 130 pounds, while the firmer models were best suited for those who weighed more than 130 pounds. Pressure Points Need To Be Cushioned Those who sleep on their backs are more likely to experience pain in the lumbar region. During our research, we found that the weight of the abdomen causes the lower back and hips to sink out of alignment with the rest of the mattress. Lumbar spine curvature can’t be accommodated by a mattress that’s too firm. Therefore, a medium-firmness mattress is ideal for back sleepers. At the shoulders and hips, the widest parts of the body, side sleepers are most vulnerable. These pressure points need to be cushioned but not so soft that they sink too far into the mattress and become out of alignment with the body. A medium to medium-firm mattress is the best option for most side sleepers in our test group. Sink Too Far Into A Soft Mattress The lumbar and neck pressure points are particularly prominent for stomach sleepers. If their pillow is too tall, it can put an excess bend in the neck and upper back. In a U-shaped position, the spine and the muscles and ligaments of the lower back are put under stress if the pelvic area can sink too far into a soft mattress. Body Becoming Misaligned In All Sleeping Positions In addition to sleeping position, body weight is an important consideration. Our hands-on sleep lab research has shown that heavier people sink further into mattresses, increasing the risk of the heavier parts of the body becoming misaligned in all sleeping positions. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds typically need a firmer mattress than those who weigh less and sleep the same way. How Do Mattresses Affect The Back? A softer, more contoured mattress can be used by people weighing less than 130 pounds without the risk of their bodies sinking out of alignment. On the other hand, lighter-weight sleepers typically require a softer mattress than an average-weight sleeper in the same position to get the support they need. You can learn more about the effects of sleeping on your side and other positions by watching the video below. Strained Rather Than Healed Since a mattress has an important role in how the body is positioned while sleeping, it can cause back pain. Most people are aware of good posture, but they only consider it when they are standing or sitting. These people may overlook the importance of having a mattress that is the right fit for them based on their body shape, weight, and position while they sleep. For the spine and joints to unwind, they need to be properly aligned and cushioned before sleeping. Exacerbating existing back problems and laying the groundwork for new ones, the body will be strained rather than healed. If your pain is worse in the morning and lessens throughout the day, it’s time to check your mattress to see if it’s the source of your discomfort.
