LEARN TO GROW YOUR OWN FRESH ORGANIC FOOD

Long time back when I started this blog I had never imagined that I would be
writing this post. I had started my blog to document and share my experience and
findings on growing vegetables in container using locally available waste and
recycled organic waste. But soon I started getting requests for making specific
posts related to organic terrace gardening. While I kept sharing my finding I
also started to make posts on readers’ requests. And thus this blog grew into a
learning resource for people who wanted to learn to grow organic vegetables in a
sustainable manner. But it … Continue reading “Learn to Grow Your Own Fresh

WHAT IS ORGANIC FARMING ANYWAY

Organic Farming is the ‘in’ thing. Everyone is talking about it and many want to
become an Organic Farmer themselves. Even movie stars are into it now. There are
separate racks in stores for organic produce and even certain beauty products
are being labeled as organic now. There are multiple ‘free’ organic farming
webinars being offered on social media on a daily basis. Though not very common,
but still business models are being sold based on organic farming. Art projects
are being developed based it (though I wont call them Art projects). Even I have
used this term in my … Continue reading “What is Organic Farming Anyway”

HOW TO PRESERVE TOMATOES IN THE MOST DELICIOUS WAY

Tomato is one plant which never disappoints in terms of produce, if basics are
done right. In our organic terrace garden tomato is in fact one of the most
highly producing plants (here is my earlier post on how to grow tomatoes).
Generally we grow around eight to ten regular tomato and four to five cherry
tomato plants every winter and we have never had to buy tomatoes from the
market. In fact there is a lot of surplus and even after sharing some of it with
our neighbors we are still left with lots and lots of fresh and juicy … Continue

GROWING THESE FOUR HERBS IN YOUR GARDEN IS SUPER EASY

Sometime earlier I got a request from one of my readers to write a post on how
to grow coriander from seeds. I was a little surprised that I had not made a
post on it already. And when I checked I found out that I have not made any post
on growing any herb whatsoever. Herbs are integral part of a terrace vegetable
garden; not only they are easy to grow and pack loads of flavors for your food,
but also because they act as pest repellents and thus help in pest management of
your garden organically. So I … Continue reading “Growing These Four Herbs in

GREEN NINJA – THE URBAN FARMING WORKSHOP FOR KIDS

Green Ninja – The Urban Farming Workshop for Kids Date – 24.11.2019, Venue –
Aikyam I am very excited about this post. A few days earlier I got an
opportunity to conduct my very first Organic Urban Farming Workshop for kids.
The workshop was organized by Aikyam located in Old Town area of Bhubaneswar.
Surrounded by canopies of different trees of varying shades of green, the open
terrace of Aikyam provided the ideal setting for the workshop. But having never
conducted any programs for children earlier I was nowhere near being the ideal
instructor. So I really had to prepare well. There were … Continue reading

ORGANIC FARMING FOR MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE

Thanks to Greta Thunberg, people around the world have been woken up to climate
change crisis. Some critics have already termed it as just a passing fad and
some have also harshly criticized the demands of climate strike group as lop
sided and even French media has warned that her radical ways could end up
depressing a generation. Despite the criticism, we can not ignore the passion
and effort of a young 16 year old, which for sure has brought about a much
needed disruption in the collective slumber of the world. Along with climate
activists there has also been the rise of … Continue reading “Organic Farming

HOW TO GROW CLUSTER BEANS IN CONTAINERS

Cluster beans is something that I never liked eating. It has a mild bitter taste
which takes a little bit of getting used to. But when you acquire the taste it
can become one of your favorites. For me the taste was never a problem. It was
the texture which I disliked. The cluster beans that you typically get in market
are a little hard in texture and the two sides of the bean has a string like
hardness to it. Hence I never ate cluster beans though it is one of my sister’s
favorite. It took me years of persuasion … Continue reading “How to Grow Cluster

FANI, AFTERMATH AND WAY AHEAD

A terrace garden being on the terrace is most vulnerable to strong winds. And
when the wind speed reaches 200 kmph, disaster strikes; quite literally. And
that is what happened to our rooftop food garden when cyclone Fani struck on 3rd
April 2019. Our garden was completely destroyed. No Preparation can be Enough Of
late we have had the issue of monkeys in our garden. In the last six months or
so the gardens raids by monkeys had become frequent and we had lost about 80% of
our produce and young plants to them. Hence we decided to extend our shade …

HOW TO SAVE TOMATO SEEDS FOR PLANTING NEXT YEAR

This winter has been a bad phase for our garden. Almost 70% of our produce has
either been eaten away or destroyed by monkeys. Only root vegetables like
radish, carrots, turnips etc have been spared by the monkeys. All kind of beans
have been eaten away. In some cases the young leaves too have been eaten in all
types of bean plants not allowing them even to grow. Cabbage heads have been
half eaten and then left. Tomatoes, Eggplants have not only been eaten , they
have also been plucked and thrown around in the garden. Monkey attacks have
become … Continue reading “How to Save Tomato Seeds for Planting Next Year”

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

 * Nikky PujariChicago, Illinois

The Organic Terrace blog is well researched, simple to follow and written by
someone who is not just passionate about growing organic vegetables but very
experienced in all of its facets. I followed instructions on tomato growing
and immediately saw results - 13 big, red, sun-ripened organically grown
tomatoes on a 10 inch container..wish I could attend the workshop too. Love
   the blog!

 * Shweta NarulaNarula Restaurant, Bhubaneswar

The reliability of and emphasis on organic fertilizers such as compost, green
manure as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is the need
of the hour. With increasing number of diseases and ill health of people,
consumption of organically grown fruits and vegetables will contribute
largely towards well being of all. Prabal's workshop on organic urban farming
is an ideal platform to learn and utilize the methods of preparing organic
materials, residues, nutrients and recycling them. Very interesting and
   knowledge enhancing workshop. Must do.

The "Organic Urban Farming Crash Course" organised by Sri.Prabal Mallik,
Founder, Organic Terrace and Ms.Shweta Agarwal, Director, Paz Farming has
come to my fortunes at the right time when I was in need of it the most.

I knew that my desire was ripe to start my own terrace vegetable garden but
was unsure of how to start one. I came to the program with almost zero
gardening experience. Thanks to Prabal Babu and Madam Shweta for making the
aspirants like me learn most of the latest skills in organic terrace
gardening. Now with this 21-day course I feel that I am thoroughly equipped
having bestowed with the right knowledge, skills, abilities and confidence to
start a successful "terrace garden" and "open land farming" as well.

My sincere thanks with whole lot of appreciations go to the duo for a
splendid academic exposure clubbed with hand-holding guidance.
I wish OT n PF all success in their future endeavors.

I recently stepped into organic urban farming in pursuit of having fresh
homegrown vegetables. And this was made simple and exciting, thanks to
organicterrace.in and its founder Mr Prabal Mallick. The site not only has
detailed explanation of growing plants, but also helps in every step of the
growing stage, giving you insight on the maintenance process meanwhile
familiarizing one with behavior of different plants. So far my experience has
been excellent. I started off with eggplants which came out to be really
delicious and now I have tomatoes, ginger, lemon, herbs, beans and garlic
growing in my terrace garden. Now I am more confident on growing more fruits
and vegetables; All thanks to organicterrace.in and the guidance of Prabal
   Bhai.

I had been planting the odd vegetables in my terrace without real success.
But last year I started taking consultation from Prabal of
http://organicterrace.in and things have completely changed since then. Not
only I learned proper ways of growing vegetables in containers, the passion
of Prabal was so inspiring that in approximately 3 months I had a full
fledged vegetable garden on my terrace. I also managed to get free giveaways
of eggplant, tomato saplings by organicterrace.in, which helped me to build
my garden faster. Huge thanks again to organicterrace and Prabal.

 * Pulak PatnaikNetwork Engineer

Messenger of Greens, that's what I would call Prabal who has shown me the
path to terrace gardening. He has gone on from being a friend and a terrific
painter to become a guide and showed me the how to grow my own vegetables in
my own house. An IT guy and a painter who is now spreading awareness about
the need of urban population to go green and grow green is doing a terrific
job through this website. Cheers and I hope more people follow this path not
just to help nature, but to help themselves.

Attending the three-week organic urban farming workshop, organized by Paz
Farming and Organic Terrace was a revelation. Both Shweta and Prabal are
extremely knowledgeable, competent and exude confidence that comes from
experience. They are keen, dedicated, helpful and more than willing to share
information. The wonderful team created a climate of collegiality among all
of us who ranged from 20 to 60 years. It was a genuinely interactive and
participatory workshop where we covered a wide gamut of topics through hands
on practice. Anyone who has the slightest interest in environment and organic
   farming must attend this workshop.
